100,000! That's so awesome! Congrats dude. Also, a two hour video?! Hell yesssss!!! Also, whenever I see people looking for resources to learn about writing, I ALWAYS point them towards your channel. I absolutely adore your channel.
If good writing is rewriting, then my first novel will be FIRE! =P Seriously though, I wrote my first draft with no real knowledge of the craft, because I like to do, not talk. It's proved an incredibly fun and fulfilling project to turn it into an awesome novel over the past few years, and mentors like you have helped immensely. Thank you!
Would love to see a scholarship for a few people to get into the classes etc. some people arent in the position to pay so much but would greatly benefit from the classes. Just a suggestion
Themes as arguments is, imo, the single most important part of storytelling. I worry when I hear someone say they have a great world but no characters, or a great story and aren't sure how to get good themes into it. A story won't be great without themes. Without some sort of argument for the reader to engage with, I'm just looking over words on a page. There's no reason for me to care. Themes are where writing starts and the story is derived from them, with each character providing a different perspective on those main arguments. I've found this to be my great gripe with modern fantasy and why I have a lot of trouble getting into modern fantasy books. Most fantasy books now have no theming at all. The bigger problem, I think, is that nowadays theming has mostly been displaced in fantasy by magic systems. Instead of the interest generated by themes and arguments made by the author, we now have magic systems whose rules have replaced thematic arguments. It's lead me to dislike magic in fantasy. The most recent example of this that I read was The Will of the Many, which I have heard only praise of, but I thought was quite a weak book. What could have been a story themed around interesting arguments about not mindlessly going along with consensus, or making statements about the culpability of ordinary people in a society who passively support, through the inaction of their daily lives, the evils committed by their government. No - instead we just get a generic magic school story where the protagonist succeeds as much through luck as through skill, and the magic system completely displaces any interesting commentary about mass consensus, built of top of a Roman inspiration that is so obvious to takes me out of the world. The Roman setting could have been great had it been worked into a theme along with the story and characters.
You were part of what turned an idea that started 4 years ago on a boring road trip into my first novel. Congrats on 100k🙏🏻 Edit: didn’t realise you were an arsenal fan I take it back… kidding.
Hi jed! I scrolled pass your video, because somehow your tumbnails looks like an ad with the yellow thing around the text. I saw the notification, otherwise I wouldnt have seen it! Just so you know, I think an other color or without the border would work better (for me). But I always love your videos! Stay awesome
This is really great advice! Thank you so much! You certainly had made my day! (And my writing career! I am estimated to finish my first book in 4 months!)
I have just finished writing the first draft of my YA dark fantasy novel, 63,000 words in total. I am very proud of this accomplishment, as it is the first full novel I have ever written. For the second draft, I do want to up the word count to 71,000 words.
AI is great for brainstorming. I use it on areas of projects that I'm struggling with. I'll tell it what I need, like ideas for magic. Based on the outcomes, I realize what I want and, more importantly, don't want. It is a great problem-solving tool.
I like your comments on creating original villains! I have also gotten tired of the power hungry baddies. I'm playing around with an antagonistic character who is driven by his loyalty to his nation and his family legacy. It's been fun to write a "heroic villain". That being said, characters are not going to see themselves the way you/others see them, and I think it is a good thing to remember when you're diving into their character.
How much stuff in a story needs to have importance to the narrative? I'm still an amateur writer and whenever i watch a video analysing a story, they point out things that a bigger symbolism in the story. I've been acting kinda insecure knowing I'm unable to write stuff like that. Best example i can think of is Maverick's motorcycle from Top Gun? What purpose did it serve other than being his bike? I'm kinda in that range of writing where a thing is there but doesn't serve a bigger purpose to the story or narrative other just being a thing a character has.
Oh yeah, my question, and if you’ve already addressed this in a video, please point me to it: the biggest deterrent I have with writing currently is getting conflicting advice like: only write in past tense vs no you want to do present now, you want to world build vs no you don’t want to over explain/describe things, or you want to only use “said/replied “ vs no you want to use more interesting verbs in your dialogue tags. What is your advice for this?
Grats on 100k! Such an amazing video with so much great knowledge. You are amazing for putting this together for your fans!! I agree AI can be great for research. I use it for the super small "would this be realistic?" questions. Sometimes you just want to know one quick thing to help you move on in a scene but it leads you to a rabbit hole. AI is great for this. For example, I had a scene in my book where a character is in a very tall tree, foraging for birds eggs. Instead of spending an hour researching what birds would likely live/nest at this height, I can just go to AI and say: "someone is high in a tree reaching into a nest and grabbing a birds egg. What bird is it likely to be?" AI: It’s likely to be a raptor like a hawk or an eagle, as they build nests high in trees. Other possibilities include larger birds like herons or ravens, which also nest in high locations. And that's good enough that I can just say its a hawk and move on without falling down the usual 2 hour rabbit hole of "How high to birds nest?" This tip is for everyone who's ever spent 3 hours looking up the process of leatherworking because some background character happens to be tanning something vaguely offscreen and it just HAS to be realistic. 🤣🤣 Amazing stuff as always, Jed. You are a beacon to the community!!
Chat I need some suggestions for my fantasy novel: I wanted to write one of the POV characters of my story and who I consider the most to be the main protagonist unable to use magic and in general to be a stranger in the world the story is set in, but I really can't find a good explaination for it since he would be the ONLY character in the setting completely disconnected from the magic system. For the moment I resorted to the typical isekai trope where the MC gets transported to a fantasy world but that's a bit lame (plus isekais don't have the best of reputations, for good reasons I might add) and it's not the direction I want the story to go (I want it to be as "realistic" and mature as I can make it while still having fantasy elements; my main inspiration is A Song of Ice and Fire). So I could just have the MC be transported to this fantasy world and don't question it at all or maybe have him just accept it but that would also be kinda strange. The fact that the protagonist is separated from the magic system would also have reprecussions on the main plot so it's an integral part of the story that I'd prefer to keep Let me know if you have some ideas since I'm sure most of you are far better at this than I am
Maybe you could write a deconstruction of the isekai trope, and use it to critique and pick apart all of the cliché tropes used in that sub-genre. I think that would be really compelling and fun to read. One trope to make fun of via a deconstruction is the haram of girls obsessed with getting with the (often male and a self-insert) bland protagonist.
@@unicorntomboy9736 I'm absolutely doing that, and specifically I'm criticizing and deconstructing the chosen one cliché. One recurring minor character is literally the most stereotypcal glory seeking anime MC that's also the chosen one who's supposed to save the world travelling with a party while being a 15 years old. But with this story having a more mature take on fantasy he, of course, fails miserably, gets brutally and uncerimoniously killed and his actions ultimately amount to nothing; yet he will still be celebrated as a hero and a martyr. On the opposite side the protagonist remains mostly unknown to the wider world. Yes he plays an important role in many events and even the fate of the world (that, spoiler, he cannot alter but only delay) but he is aware and content with the fact that he will probably be forgotten by history despite his role in it
@@unicorntomboy9736 the whole idea started as a comedic satire after I watched the anime Konosuba; but then I realized: why shouldn't I make my characters suffer throughout the story? I also got very invested in the world building and lore side of things (my primary inspirations for this are The Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls) and I think that a more serious tone would highlight that a bit better; but of course I don't want to fall for the edgy grimdark trap
That's an interesting premise. I think the most important thing to figure out is the rules of your magic system (and tweak them if necessary) and the world around it. And with this I also mean to look past this MC and this timeline specifically. Because in the end, it really depends on how magic works to decide how this person ended up without those powers. I don't think it is necessarily a plot-thing, if you catch my drift. It could be purely coincidental, it could be genetic (A discovery of Witches might be an interesting read for you to understand what I mean with that. A very coincidental result of a long lineage resulting in specific powers, or in your case the absence of those powers). It could be a curse, if that is something that is possible with your magic system. It could be fate, perhaps prophecy and the reason why or how specifically remains shrouded in mystery, but it happened because it had to. It could've been an accident (thinking ATLA/ALOK where the MCs at some point in the story momentarily lose their powers). This accident may also help explain why they don't have a memory (a solid knock to the head will do that to ya.) And it might also depend to what extent you want to focus on the WHY in the story. Is it a mystery that this MC is going to solve or try to undo? Or is it simply a fact and other than establishing the MC's skills, doesn't really play a role in the story? Because a curse for example would make the why and how (and how to undo it) a much bigger question that people probably want answered in the story. And if that's not where you want to go, that might not be the best solution for you. So in short, I think delving deeper into the magic system and the world around it, as well as exploring your 'why' could be helpful in finding the right answer for you.
