This week I'm bringing you the continuation of 'Right Hand Essentials' and also, one of the most effective tips I learned in the early stages.
It is a very simple exercise in itself, but done right can have huge results for your playing. Give it a shot and I'll be looking forward to read about your results!
    I wish you happy practicing!

Wow, a super helpful practice technique! Your videos are so helpful. It’s hard to believe all you created for your business, even before you finished your masters! You’ve really mastered online teaching. Smart, talented, charming, beautiful, and able to get to the nugget of every problem with very actionable methods. Hi Merce, I'm 68, and picking up the clssical lessons lately. I bought a Yamaha GC 3D 1971 and its quality really pushes me to continue. I played the guitar when I was still young but only had time since my retirement to concentrate playing classical. Your lessons are not only extremely helpfu--it goes into the most basic techniques that others do not cover. Besides, your sincerity is infectious. Thank you !!!

You have been in contact with some of the most amazing guitar players/teachers, and you have obviously a way of putting all you learn into your playing and your teaching. Congratulations on a job well done. Thanks for posting.

After having used my hands for hard physical labor for 40+ years my dexterity flexibility probably aren't what they could be. With consistently following your tutorials and focusing in each particular exercise I am noticing some significant change in my ability to play with clean sounding notes. Also the request for a memorization tutorial was a great suggestion from your other student. I could really use it. My expectations for being able to play well and love and appreciation are growing with each little bit of success. You bring hope to my music world. Thank you very much for that. God Bless ya Merce.

This is effectively the classical guitar/fingerpicking equivalent of what we call "bursts" in the electric guitar community. Some (extra) notes from me:
First, this is NOT a beginner exercise. Before you jump into this, you wanna make sure that you're posture is right, your fingers' basic mechanics work as they should, you're relaxed (all that "starter's pack"- check Marce's video on the topic!), so you don't have to worry about those while workin' on this.
Secondly, this is NOT to substitute slow "with a metronome" exercises! With this, you "teach your fingers to move quickly", just like, at some point in life, you "teach your legs to run." But, again, before this, you gotta some practice under your belt - so that your fingers are ready. And then, you add "the slow / metronome" thing to it to effectively fill up the so-called "in-between speed" space (as well as some other things such as rhythmic accuracy, musical accents (not to sound robotic), and so on and so forth).

When shipping a guitar make sure that you detune the strings all the way to where there is no tension at all. Your guitar strings tighten at different altitudes on the airplane and if you don't make sure the strings are loose, it could pull the bridge off of the top, or even crack the headstock.

Its hard to tell if I haven't seen your right hand in action, but maybe you could give it a shot to warm up with arpeggio combinations that involve only p-m-a and practice them with planting (immediate planting to start training your A finger to remain in place). I might do a planting tutorial one day as many people have told me that they have similar issues. Hope that helps in the meantime though! Keep me posted! 🙏🏻

Merce this is a follow up from yesterdays comment. I cannot believe how your left hand drills have improved my playing.
I do your x pattern, and three other exercises.
I noticed, unconsciously, that my left hand pinki was traveling too far and was almost poking me in the eye. Also the thumb was lagging behind, out of position when traveling down the neck. But after a couple of your tutorials my fingers are staying closer to the strings, which enables more relaxation and increases speed automatically.
I can do tremolo with the right hand pinki, I guess it is labeled as S in Flamenco. I have a problem doing your speed drill, alternating from A and S, and vice versa. However, I can play in reverse order, S-A-M-I with ease.
I am struggling with barre cords, between the 4 and 5 string barre exercise. There are more hits than misses, than before.
I have two questions, what is the difference between a cord and a key? I thought they were the same.
    Question 2.

I appologize for the question I asked. I know what a cord is, I meant chord. A cord is a string or rope material for binding something.
I was told that a note is a note. Two notes is harmony, and three notes or more is a chord. Harmonically speaking.
I want to ask pertinent questions and not appear to sound like an idiot. There aren't many classical guitar teachers around, becauase there aren't many classical guitar players compared to the other styles of guitar players around.
There aren't any classical guitar teachers in the town where I live.

Difficult to play it quickly with no fingernails... But this will be my aim as a man growing my fingernails is not an option... I am also a little repulsed when I see a man with long fingernails playing the guitar something about it makes me cringe... Quite lovely and wonderful for the ladies though..

I see you have very long nails. I heard the theory that the longer the nails are, the longer it takes for a string to slide to the edge of the mail. Don’t you think it slows down the speed?

I'm trying to pay close attention to your excellent advice-but you look so much like my first love, even the way you wear your hair. Ah, but that was long ago. Now then, it is very important to relax the fingers...

I have never seen longer nails in my life. You can have a great technique but not a good tone.

Many classical guitar players prefer long nails on their strumming/picking hand. I was confused too until doing a bit of research.

Instead of playing so-called fast to impress stupid people, maybe it is a better idea to develop good sound first and then aim to move people. Silly girl.

If you have such an urge to judge my real sound, at least go and watch the music videos where I use more decent mics. For the vlogs and tutorials I still need to figure many details to capture good audio. Best wishes, M*

"Everyone you meet (also in the comment box) is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always" (Robin Williams, 1951-2014). Merce, thanks for taking care of such people with your elegant and polite answers, also to this 'silly' guy, who is clearly having a really heavy fight with himself and his life :DDDDDDD
