      Thank you! I hope you'll enjoy the future videos just as much. I also have some new scanning content coming to the "Classy Dog Studios" channel soon that might interest you, too. Next month I'll be putting up a video showing how to build a simple little rig for scanning trees and flat surfaces quickly.

    James your photogrammetry tuts were getting better and better, and this one is really unholy majestic! so many useful bits, from polarizing filter to delighting, to drones, telephoto lenses, etc. By the way, have you tested the same industrial scene in Reality Capture?

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Gleb! Actually, I did buy a license of Reality Capture to try it out, but funny enough, I got a better result in the demo version than I did in the official version. I don't know why I couldn't replicate the quality in the licensed version; perhaps it's a change in the software between the two. I hope to learn a little more about RC in the future and figure out how to better control the settings. The UI is a bit daunting to me.

    • @alexanderkolyasa5850

      Want to notice that RC has monthly subscription on Steam. Also it can be a lot cheaper than on web site. For my country it's only 12$ per month. But for UK it's something aroung 30 euro. So check Steam first)

    This was the best photoscan guide to man-made environments video I've ever seen. For me, I'd like to know how to take a bricks scan and make that into a tileable texture (diffuse + height map). This has been haunting me at night.

    • @smallpoly10
      @smallpoly10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a couple ways to do it. Let's say you have 1.5x2 meters worth of brick, and want to end up with a 1x1 meter tiling texture...

    • @smallpoly10
      @smallpoly10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      One way to handle it would be take your nearly flat geometry, bring it into your 3d program, then project that model onto a quad. From there you can use XNormal to project your high poly texture onto your flat model including whichever channels you wish (diffuse, normals, occlusion, etc.). If you then bring that into Photoshop, you can use bring the texture into groups, then use masking and offsetting to nondestructively make it tile.
      The main downside to this method is not being able to use tools like healing brush and content aware fill because you're working with groups of layers instead of layers themselves. It's also tedious to do more than a few groups of layers, because when you're ready to export there will be a lot of things that have to be turned off and on. Fortunately this can be resolved by turning the initial group into a smart object before editing. That way you can isolate a layer once and resave to get each kind of map.

    • @smallpoly10
      @smallpoly10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another way is to instance the high poly geometry in your 3d program, make a 3x3 grid of them based on the distance you want your final texture to be, then delete parts out that mess with the overlap. This is more or less how you set up tiled geometry in general. This method can be cumbersome to work with because of the large polycounts involved by duplicating the high poly 9 times. Once you have that, you can either set up a camera to have the exact right range for perfect tiling to generate your maps from, or you can again bring things into XNormal to project. The benefit of this approach is not having to go into photoshop.

    • @smallpoly10
      @smallpoly10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Other than that, there's some things you can do in zbrush, and also Substance painter now has a cloning tool.

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Olivier! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm actually way better at shooting than I am at baking textures and all that stuff, but I think Smallpoly's explanation below is pretty good! If you have Substance Designer, you can actually user their alternate method of scanning, which should be suitable for creating tiling textures if you aren't trying to capture too big of an area. Here's a link to an article about it: www.allegorithmic.com/blog/your-smartphone-material-scanner

    when shooting head on you're actually just using the sun or your light source to cast shadows on your material in order for the detail to stand out - so in fact you're not shooting head on in relation to the light.

    Awsome tutorial !! can you tell me what software you would recommend for capturing 3d of heritage buildings(a lot of details) for a virtual city tour I'm trying to prepare ... also it has to be exportable to pdf or something easier to share to the public. so far I have only tried Agisoft photoscan..

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Sara! Sorry for the delayed reply, I just saw your message. I would recommend trying out the new option of generating meshed from depth maps in Metashape (PhotoScan's new name). Basically it allows you to skip building the dense point cloud, and it could be quite helpful for retaining more smaller details. So essentially, you just align the photots and then generate the mesh (it should show the "from depth maps" option, that's what you want to use).
      As for how to share it, I would recommend something like Sketchfab, since you can also add points of interest to show off specific areas, which I imagine is useful for virtual tours. Maybe exporting as a PDF is possible too, but I have no idea, I never made one for anything besides text! haha. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

    What about photoscanning things underwater? Is there anything special I should be thinking about?
    Great video anyways!

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the delayed reply! You know, I've seen a fair number of people scanning underwater, and they say they don't have any issues with it (such as refraction). I've never used an underwater housing, so I don't know if there are any requirements for it there. But I think as long as your camera is fully immersed in the water, it should work okay. I think it's when you're shooting through a variety of mediums (such as air and glass and water) that problems with the changes in refraction start to come up.
      Also, it sounds obvious, but the clearer the water you're shooting in, the easier it will be! Murky water will greatly limit how far away you can be from the subject. I'd recommend a small test scan or two before you "dive" into any big projects, just to get your "feet wet".

    • @argore9709
      @argore9709 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClassyDogFilms Thanks! I will do some tests, and if successful, i'll try in the nearby lake or sea. And/or if possible, as i haven't seen any videos on this, maybe you could do one? It would be very helpfull for us who wants to go "deeper" into photogrammetry.
      Thanks for the reply again!

    I am interested in seeing a miniature scanned. By miniature, I mean what the film and TV industry call a scaled model. Usually painted and aged to look real. Like what a model train enthusiast might make for his\her train set. Plaster for the terrain and little trees made of plastic, rubble made of real pebbles etc. All to make a tabletop model look like a massive rocky cliff. These are typically used for matte paintings. Take for example a scaled down model of a rocky cliff. Because this subject is indoors and movable ( within reason) I would assume you could get unlimited photos at just about any angle. I'm interested to see how something that is made by hand like a plaster cliff that is also painted as faux rocks etc how it will translate in the scanning process. I work as a VFX artist. I have worked with miniatures shot in front of a green screen hundreds of time. But this Photo scan tech could change the way we integrate those scaled models or "Miniatures, and the way they are utilized in our workflow, or Pipeline as it is usually referred to. Great videos, very informative. Thank you.

      I did something like that recently of a thrift store find, though it's not my best work. skfb.ly/6u77D
      There are also some much more talented people doing a game called "Trüberbrook" using photogrammetry shot miniatures as 3D background plates. Tech breakdown vid: th-cam.com/video/5rqZ1KTXOEQ/w-d-xo.html
      There's also a reddit post about it here with some more info: www.reddit.com/r/photogrammetry/comments/6kp6c1/video_game_using_photogrammetry_of_scale_models/

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great suggestion, Robert. I've thought about scanning miniatures in the past, but have never attempted it yet. Although I have been playing with the idea of a PhotoScan video focusing on how to scan very subjects. Scale models would certainly be a good fit for that subject, so hopefully that will be a subject I can make a video on! Thanks for the excellent suggestion, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your scan turned out pretty well, Smallpoly! I like it.
      And I thought of the same thing when Robert mentioned scanning miniatures. I don't know if it was the same team or not, but I saw a game being created that incorporated the same idea: building and scanning miniature sets instead of creating them entirely on the computer. A really novel and interesting concept!

    I scanned a whole 9 building blocks once and did it parts with rather good detail... on a laptop. The first step I used all of the photos to align the model right and then I did subsets of max photos number with my computer with just 16gb of RAM for the Dense cloud step. You should figure that technique out too and see if you can show how to use laptops to their fullest when photoscaning.
    So to recap:
    1. Use all the photos for the aligment part.
    2. Then divide the pics to subset for the dense cloud creation part.
    3. Combine the scans in your 3D software of choice.

    I'm sure you're already aware of this but just as a heads up to those who aren't: some of the PhotoScan issues addressed in this video are overcome in the latest version of PhotoScan:
    - The thinner elements of your cement factory scan would likely have been reconstructed better using PhotoScan's new "visibility consistent mesh generation" and "volumetric masking" options (see PhotoScan blog on how to use them here: www.agisoft.com/index.php?id=48)
    - Delighting (at least for soft shadows) is now built in to PhotoScan (as you said in the video: expect more and more software to have this built in in the future) (see PhotoScan blog: www.agisoft.com/index.php?id=42)

      @fnytnqsladcgqlefzcqxlzlcgj9220 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have done this with relative success in 3DF Zephyr.
      The way 3DF recommends to do it is to take many photos from the perimeter of the room facing inwards.
      Like how if you are scanning an object you are always facing the centre of the object, you always face the centre of the room.
      Try to use a lens that is as wide as possible.
      In fact 360 degree cameras work fairly well for this, and can be picked up for fairly cheap.
      So as usual as long as you take enough photos in a clean way and wait long enough for render time you should be fine. If you search 3DF photography for photogrammetry you'll probably find a good video giving basic instructions that include interiors.

    Hi :), which software did you use for render your meshes like at 15:57 ? thanks you !

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! I used Blender to create all the renders of the scans, and specifically I used Cycles inside of Blender to render them. (Except for the matcap renders from 14:10-15:56, those were rendered in the Blender viewport, which is much faster to render).

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, and I forgot to mention, I decimated the scans before importing them into Blender. They were all decimated to 500,000 faces, except for the factory, which I decimated to 4 million faces to avoid losing too much detail.

    Thanks for your videos...one question,in your opinion,for a Canon 600d(t3i),what lens is the best?..i have E-FS 18-55 kit lens....i want sharp image and good focus range...my lens,mmmmh!!!.....especially for textures

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's hard to say, since I think it depends on what you're shooting. But I think a good all-around focal length is 20mm. I have a 10-20mm Sigma f/4-5.6, which is fairly sharp and has good depth of field. I use it often, and bought it for around $300 used from B&H. Another good option might be the 24mm Canon pancake lens, which is significantly cheaper but still good quality. Both of these lenses are designed for the smaller sensor size of our Canon Rebel cameras.

    • @MUDHD
      @MUDHD 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ClassyDogFilms mainly, I'm scanning walls or soils (to understand, like Sebastian Zapata) ... but also rocks and so on ... the quality is also good, but more and more, I need something better, and before deciding to take a more performing camera, I wanted to try with a better lens. Thanks a lot for the reply

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, that's cool! Just for your reference: some of the first scans I shot for Sebastian's Friendly Shade textures were captured using a Canon 28mm lens (intended for full frame cameras). These include the sandy ground and wooden planks. But after a few of those scans, I switched to my Sigma 10-20mm lens @ 20mm, since it gave me deeper DOF, was a bit sharper, and seemed to have less CA and softness in the corners. I started using that when I shot the manhole covers for him, if you've seen those. I also shoot with my old Canon T2i still, so the resolution is not incredible, but I make up for it by shooting somewhere between 1-2 feet away from the surface. If you're ever unsure whether to invest in a new lens or not, I recommend renting it from a place like Borrow Lenses to see if it will fit your needs. That's what I do when I'm uncertain.

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! For the interior scanning video, I'll be sure to scan an entire room to show my approach. To describe it, you can use a variety of techniques such as projectors, creating markers, or shooting with special filters. I would advise trying out the use of markers in PhotoScan to aid in cleaning up blobby areas, since those tend to be due to having little or no points (such as solid colors on walls and ceilings). If the area is simple enough, you could then use those markers to create simple geometry to project your textures onto.
      The other methods, like projections and filters, can allow for more precise results, but at the cost of more time and practice required (not to mention money)! But I hope some of those ideas may help you get started!

      It was a lot of fun seeing what worked best when it came to shooting some of the specimens, although minerals where a bit of a nightmare, given their crystalline nature (I did get lucky sometimes: skfb.ly/XxVHn ). I ended up just opting for a plain white background, and covering the turntable in a sheet of white card-stock (using the same turntable as the one you had in your tutorial), and this seems to have worked out so far, but using a proper lighting setup, masking, and post-processing the images would probably improve quality significantly.

    Great Video! Thank you. I had a question that I would appreciate your input. Have you tried using a circular polarizing filter with a ring light where a sheet of linear polarizing film was cut into and place over the ring light? I made a simple version but had a hard time noticing any advantage to this "on-the-go" set-up. Thank you again for the fun, awesome videos. Oh and to use a term, this set-up is trying to mock up cross-polarization. Also interior scanning would be fun to watch next.

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Bruce! Yes, I actually shoot with just that sort of set up all the time now! And the good news is that I plan to cover cross-polarization in the interior scanning video, which looks to be what most people want to see next. I hope to have that video out early next year!
      I don't know if it will help, but maybe the issue lies in the filters and linear polarizing film you're using. I use my Hoya HD filters on the camera, and linear polarizing film from polarization.com (just the simple "linear polarizer by the foot", though I might try the laminated stuff in the future) on the light.

And in regard to your question- it is a complicated and long answer, but I plan to answer all those questions in the head and body scanning video coming out (hopefully) next year. Until then, I'll just say that I've seen some very good scans done with raspberry pi cameras, so if you're looking to build a large rig, you may want to look into those. Frédéric Chauveau de Villoutreys has done a lot of work in that area, I would search for his rigs (I know you can find them on Facebook). I hope that helps!

      If I had the ability to, I would use a different form of scanning! But if I had to use photogrammetry, I would probably use Reality Capture, because I've seen it handle those types of subjects much better than PhotoScan. I would also try to get some dust or dirt on the car if possible. If that wasn't an option, I would try projecting a random texture pattern or noise onto the surface of the car I was working on, and shoot it in segments. I'll be covering these methods in the interior scanning guide!

    yours is by far the best photogrammetry tutorials I've seen around. Just one question though, would it matter if you used more than one focal lengths in a single batch of shots for a scan in terms of the quality output, and have you tried the turntable workflow using Reality Capture? I had no luck on getting a good scan in that software with the turntable workflow. As for your poll, I'd request the next tutorial on camera rigs, esp. in how to shoot a 600+ pic scan to get the same fidelity of Romain's motorcycle here, www.artstation.com/artwork/QJGgr
    And one more thing, what's the lounge song that plays when you show your 3d scans in the video, love it! ;)

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Justin! I've used multiple focal lengths together in past projects, and have never noticed any issues from it. The only thing I can think of is that you might want to be careful which images you build your texture from, since there may be obvious differences in contrast/sharpness/color/etc between different lenses.
      I haven't used RC much, and have never tried a turntable scan with it. It might be possible, but perhaps you need a very specific setup to get it to work well. I don't know if RC supports masks for images, either.
      There's a lot of stuff I have planned for the camera rig video, I think you will like it! I'll ask Romain if he shot that motorcycle handheld or if he had any special gear. And the song that plays it called "Zazie" by Kevin MacLeod. You can find it on his site, incompetech.com!

    • @justinyuvilla8944
      @justinyuvilla8944 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any news on Romain? It just seems like it would be much harder to shoot without blur if it is handheld, so it is best to use some sort of crane or rig to keep the cam steady at numerous different angles and positions.

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just heard back from Romain, he tells me he did indeed shoot it handheld, which I suppose makes sense if he shot around 40 images per minute (he says it was ~630 shots in around 15 minutes). A rig would allow for lots of detail, but usually at the cost of time. He did use an expensive lens, so that probably gave a little more sharpness and speed than a more typical lens would allow. But the other factor is probably just lots of practice- I've heard of Romain shooting other subjects handheld, and it always surprises me how quickly he is able to capture such good scans. That's why I say he is a machine!

There's a ton you and do with standard though, and the free options are only going to get better. I'm sure unity's current workflow is just their first pass.

      The autodesk one? It's has some upsides and downsides, the big upside being that it's a one step process and does all the processing in the cloud. The photo count limit and limited power user controls bug me though. Reality Capture, from capturingreality.com, is also worth checking out, though the license is subscription based instead of one-off.

      I'm going to stick with PhotoScan because I'm only halway through this little series of videos, but at least the tricks should work well with just about any photogrammetry software. And I figure, if I can get it to look good in PhotoScan, it should look even better in Reality Capture!

      I know, it's been ages! I still plan to make one in the future with all the tips I've learned, I've just had very little time to work on anything due to my scanning work over the past ~4 years. But I do plan to make more scanning videos one day (probably just in time for them to all be obsolete).

    Thanks for the awesome intro to phototgrammetry videos. Can you recommend any resources (Training videos or maybe PDFs) for post PhotoScan editing in Blender? Thanks!

    • @ClassyDogFilms
      @ClassyDogFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Jorgen! Gosh, I can't recall seeing anything specific to Blender about that- are you looking for information focused on just creating textures from the scans, or about models+textures?

    • @jorgennelson4443
      @jorgennelson4443 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply! I'm looking for information about editing models + textures in Blender. My goal is to build virtual reality environments for Unity and/or Unreal, but right now every model I make is over 100MB.

      Ah, I see! I don't have much experience with baking, but I've seen some tools to help automate creation of lower-poly models from high res. There's one by Danyl Bekhoucha called "AssetGen" which is designed for Blender. Maybe it will help!

      Thank you! I used Blender to render the animations in this video. Now with Eevee, it will be even easier to get scan demos rendered for future videos.
