@SlamminEagle The garbage trucks were essentially open flat tops with side and tail gates. The driver stayed in the truck, and 2 runners literally threw the metal garbage cans up to a third crew member who was standing on the waste and emptying the cans onto the growing pile of waste around him and then throwing the empty can back to the runners. You would be surprised at how quickly this method was compared to today. They did this in all kinds of weather conditions and stank to high heaven at the end of their shift. My father was a Garbo, which is why my interest in garbage trucks is still strong to this day.
