The call of a currawong echoing down a foggy valley in the foothills of the Australian Great Dividing Range is one of the hauntingly beautiful bird calls I have ever heard

australians are lucky to have large native passerines like this one. the largest native passerine left in new zealand is the kokako, which is about half the weight of the average magpie

Sadly all of your birds are getting wiped out and have been since the first humans to reach New Zealand, especially with the introduction of rodents and other invasive creatures.
Look up “gene drive”, it’s a genetic technology that could wipe out the entire population of an animal in a region over generations and could have been used on the rats in NZ, unfortunately your leaders (or at least the pope Le who could have permitted it’s use) refused to allow it so your wildlife will continue to die out...

mustardistasty Hi Mit, currently it's the butcher birds making a noise at my place at half light. Not the lovely song they sing without much effort but the noises they make when they're throwing their whole body into it. It seems like they try to outdo each other.

really interesting I have a couple of neighbors who make different calls, we have been raising their young for the last 3 years and this year we managed to keep all 4! They have called for each other, the babies, and me, but I haven't heard them making calls like this one in the video

So cute, we also have 2 currawong visitors in the backyard. I feed them blueberries and sometimes cut the grapes into 4 so it would be easy for them to swallow it. They keep on coming everyday and love the fruits...sometimes they will leave compressed seeds, like 12 on the table from other trees they ate just to eat the one i put. I also talk and sing a whistle to them and they will listen and stay

So nice to watch this. I have a pair that come to visit me every day. Just like the one in your video, they extraordinarily curious birds and will sit for an hour or more watching me tidy the kitchen, prep meals and such. Even sweeping the floor with a broom seems to intrigue them. I laugh when I see them craning their necks to get a better view. I try hard to do the right thing and not feed them, but a few worms from my worm farm as a reward for the entertainment they provide seems only fair. And I agree Jeff, their eyes are stunning, mesmerizing. Some folks say they look evil, but I strongly disagree. They now bring their babies to visit. I've had the company of two generations now, and another due to appear in coming months. Looking forward to meeting the next batch of fluff balls when they arrive.

The currawongs are down again from the Snowy Mountains which are about an hour or so south of here. They arrived here just before sunset, flying to and calling from the trees they frequent in our driveway and in our western windbreak. As Slim Dusty sang it, when they come down from the mountains the switch to cold weather is about a week away. I used to doubt their timing but they are spot on every year with this migration so I associate hearing their calls with heralding the imminent end of indian summer days and the beginning of equinoxial gales or foggy crisp autumn mornings.

We've just had one on the balcony. We live near Gold Coast. I've only been here a year and a half and only lived in Australia 7 years so a bit unfamiliar with a lot of the bird calls. Ver rarely seen currawongs near the house. It came to see why the butcherbirds, doves and magpie larks were on there (Food). I tried to toss it a little meat but the food went through the balcony wires so a butcherbird dived after the food and startled the currawong which flew away. I then heard an unfamiliar bird call and came to this video to find out of it was the currawong and sure enough it's the same call. :)

I have two pairs and their young come for my dog meat which is lean lamb, they do so well on it. They come to the patio window sitting next to it on the my clothes airer watching us until we notice. The baby makes a sound like a hissing noise or a hoot for attention. They are cautious but comfortable with us being close by when eating. They will eat near magpies that also come for meat they never challenge the magpie but stand up to any that try to get close to their meat, especially when their feeling young and needing food for themselves and the young.

No they are in a different family. they are in the same family (Artamidae) as wood swallows butcher birds and Australian magpies. Crows and ravens are in a different family (Corvidae).

They definately look like. corvid. But no, not related. Closer to the Magpie. Really, their own class of bird.
