This situation is something the significant other should always compare to figure skating/ice dancing pairs and competitive ballroom dancers. There is a degree of chemistry that makes said pair work, but most of the time said pairs leave it on the ice/floor. But the girlfriend/boyfriend need to understand this going in or it's just not going to work out in the long term. Watching competitive figure skating pairs when the Olympics are on is a good way to get a feel for what your significant other is doing in situations like this.
