- In today's episode, we explore the Hotlands and continually confront Metatron with Alphys support, meet up with Sans at the MTT Resort, and make our way through New Home for the final confrontation with Asgore.
Hearing the sound of two men discussing a cool game fills me with determination.
I believe this is something explicitly stated in the library perhaps(?) but an important factor of this game is that humans are objectively stronger than monsters. In the podcast, you two discuss "would you be able to extend mercy to the worst person in human history?" and the ultimate answer to that question is, "it wouldn't matter." Because the worst person I can think of would be stronger than me (even if not physically, in their power to control others) and so my mercy would mean nothing. The reason you have to defeat Flowey and Asgore in combat before you have the ability to spare them is that the game is telling you (perhaps unintentionally?) only the strong have the right to make that choice. You could be the kindest person in the entire world, but unless you have the strength (or determination in this case) to enforce that standard of kindness, you are wholly incapable of enacting change. I won't go into spoilers about it here, but this is something I felt delatrune's first chapter is acutely aware of.
This is a really important point. The 'obvious' answer they were suggesting in the video was a certain chancellor, but the difference between him and Flowey is that we could not be in a position to forgive him in the same way we are with Flowey. Flowey is defeated and, to put no finer point on it, at our mercy. Only through domination was there a chance at forgiveness. Therefore, the message is not of blind forgiveness to literally anyone no matter how evil, but that if and when we have the power to forgive, it is a duty. But too often that is not a power we have the privilege of exercising.
So two fun facts about the Photoshop Flowey fight and the endgame.
1, each of the mini-games where you call for help from the six human souls are themed around the various attack and defense items you've found throughout your adventure. The implication is that as you've been picking up new weapons and armor, those items were left behind by the previous humans who fell into the underground and were killed.
2, When you reload your save after a neutral ending (after a fight with Photoshop Flowey), it loads in before the Asgore fight began. This means that if your Exp was still zero at that moment, you could actually kill Asgore or Flowey and reach a true pacifist ending without resetting. On your reverted save, Asgore and Flowey are still alive so it's as though you never killed them in the first place.
And in fact, if you kill Flowey and then reset your file back to the beginning, Flowey's power allows him to remember the fact that you killed him, which means for all encounters with Flowey through the game he actually refuses to even show up.
One thing about his face during the battle. Although it looks menacing, upon closer inspection, he's actually looking down. He can't bring himself to look at the player as he fights them. At least not in the eyes.
The Flowey boss fight is my jam. True horror, because it’s like your in a nightmare. It’s a perfect escalation from the end boss of Earthbound.
Undertale isnt my thing, but I am glad these videos exist for people who do enjoy them. Keep being awesome, Resonant!
been waiting for this! I hope you guys talk about Deltarune one day. And for that matter, LISA the Painful and OMORI would be perfect for this show as well.
Also, in the black and white house, did you notice that when you look at the mirror, it says, "Despite everything, it's still you." Such a good quote that you stayed true to yourself after all that you've been through.
Always eager for more analysis of my favorite RPGs. Glad I found you guys when you were on Undertale and Xenosaga!
Edit: p.s.: there’s an Undertale musical by Man on the Internet that puts lyrics to every song. Some work better than others but it’s surprisingly good overall!
Many thanks for this hint, I didn't know about the musical and I'll definitely give it watch.
It seems kind of strange for Toby Fox not to recognize that the reason why players call the Genocide route "Genocide" is because Undertale's monster population is represented by a limited number of random encounters and the player can canonically seek out and kill every single one of them.
In almost all video games, the player's engagement in violence is more of means to abstract conflict than a canonical action that the player character takes. It's not uncommon for the player character to stab an enemy repeatedly under the player's command only for said enemy to be presented as completely unharmed, with canonical harm only taking place in the cutscenes. The answer to the question, "How many Goombas does Mario kill?" is "Probably zero," if the goal is to determine the number of fictionally conscious beings who are no longer canonically alive as a result of Mario's actions.
Undertale's refusal to apply "game rules" to random encounters creates for a very compelling experience, but it's compelling /because/ its insistence on making one's choices within the combat system have narrative consequences is very different from almost everything else out there. In almost every other game, the narrative state of the world is completely indifferent to the number of enemies the player takes down.
Really enjoying this content, Undertale has so much to say and you're doing an amazing job discussing it, very interesting!
What a treat for tonight! Thank you!
A Quest 64 analysis sure would be something XD Thanks for another fantastic episode! I love the way you've explored Undertale.
Undertale’s been kinda memes to death so kuch so that people kinda forgot how great the game genuinely was (me included lol). I’m grateful for the podcast reminding me how much of a treat this game is.
P.S. it was kinda funny to hear y’all promote the first episode of the xenosaga podcast at the end when we’re at episode 9 now lol
As a free listener i am unhinged at waiting god dang it
this is a great analysis i am excited to see what you talk about in part 4 🙂
Aw man just finished the video, so good.
The silent elevator ride after you say goodbye to Alphys... it hit me hard.
To be honest, I killed Flowey in my first run. It felt good, hahah.
Very interesting info about the angel names!!
For the lyrics version of the song that you said someone must've done of Metaton singing, check out the album "FALLEN: An Undertale Tribute" and the track "Oh! One True Love!" The album is a compilation of fan-covers of the soundtrack
Genocide route might not be fun to play 98% of it, but for the actual new bosses in that route are damn near to the best content in the game.
Azrael is the angel of death, right?
Xenosaga……………………………………..next.

*cue Steven Universe "It's ok guys, he says he's sorry" meme
Wooo!
