the eerie dissonance in this song is created by quarter tones. kind of a weird technique but is really effective. this was meant to represent the worried state of anxiety many jews felt during this time period
This is now my fav composition by Copland.
A wonderfully fractured piece of music by an American musical legend.
It really captures what Jewish people were going through at the time in 1929, and
we know that it got much worse after that. What a masterpiece this is, and that ending, whoa!
Thank you, TheWelleszCompany; just heard about Copland's 'Vitebsk' (which premiered in NY on Feb. 16, 1929) on Composers Datebook; this was an earlier, more dissonant Copland, to be sure, but I still hear and appreciate his genius, as well as the ethnic theme of interest! :)
Amazing!

This strongly reminds me of Scriabin 10th Sonata!
Alves...agree, the opening theme - but the rest is another story!
Ahhh dissonance....
I love this!
why did you watch this exactly?
Praise Jesus!
I can hear some sheep in there. Bah bah bah🐑😂
WOW it's the worst song
Disagree, it’s brilliant.
It's not evena song... because there aren't even any lyrics to begin with.
*an exciting movement at **6:00**...*
