Thanks for comment, a lot colder for you in Canada I believe, saying that it's -1 here today with some light snow, too icy to ride, so far my Merlin wax jacket seems to be wind and waterproof. Take care...
Thanks for tip, I do carry waterproof rain pants with me just in case of cold or rain. At this time of year I always wear thermals under my jeans, I agree, whatever it takes to keep warm 👍
As an older geezer newly returned to biking after a gap of 50 years, this video is a source of excellent information, so I’ll subscribe and hopefully enjoy future videos. Keep up the good work, buddy. 😊
Closer to 80 than 70, me too 🤐. Handguards, heated grips and a small screen help a lot too. Gerbing heated jackets are brilliant in my opinion , probably the best. Remember the old days with the black Belstaff jackets, stuffing newspapers inside them , bloody hell. Just subscribed.
I agree, whatever it takes to keep warm, I'm looking forward to a ride this coming Thursday 0 degrees, that'll test my kit. Thanks for comment and subscribing, keep safe!
Funny enough I've just routed out a pair of Hein Gerrick Mitts I bought years ago , still very good nick 👍 I've just bought a set of thermal T shirt and pants to go under my jeans , I already have waterproof trousers to go over the jeans if it gets a bit colder , layers seem to work well providing each layer does a specific function 😀. At 80 I think it's marvelous that your still enjoying what makes you happy, I've turned 74 and still love riding Motorbikes done it all my life 😊 nothing better in my opinion 😊 Stay warm , stay safe 😊
Only 76 me, nearer 80 than 70 just 😁 been riding off and on since 1966 ( Bantam ) Plan to keep riding, plenty of time now retired! Thanks for your comment ride safe 👍
Keeping your body core warm will help circulate heat around the rest of you. I know those roads well and are a favorite summer evening ride for me. Thanks for the video info on heated gear in the real world.
I ride down to around 38 F .. I just dress like I am going skiing (I live in New England ) . Silk under trousers and a good sweater under a leather jacket . I do love a good scarf around the neck .. Great gauntlet gloves (heated grips ) .Layers layers layers .. The coldest I ever rode was in Glamorgamshire to Pembrookshire mid winter .Higher elevation you would see a cloud coming up and then the Belstaff suit would ice up :) Wet cold is the hardest :) All the best , Guy
Guy I agree wet and cold sucks, sometimes can't be avoided but I do tend to check forecast and plan my rides hoping to avoid the rain, in UK that's almost impossible 🤣 thanks for your comment!
Oh yes, l remember the days of freezing hands, knees and toes! Thermal long johns are great under jeans. Like you, I also find the heated gloves stop your hands getting cold, rather than feeling warm, which is fine by me. I've bought some Goldtop socks and they seem very warm. Ride safe.
Thanks for comment, glad you have the same experience with gloves, it had crossed my mind that they were faulty but my hands weren't cold. Looking at the forecast they will get a proper test soon!
Nice insight into heated gear. Going to fit elephant ears to my bike this winter and might even fit some 60s police style leg shields to my crash bars. Had a pair of heated glove liners back in the 70s. Actually worked well except the thumbs caught the airflow. Lovely riding area.
Powys is a gem. I'm always in a rush on the A470 either down to Cardiff or home to Gwynedd. Love to explore at leisure one day- Enfield 350 might be the ideal choice for that but I think I'll wait for spring !!
Enjoyed your abbreviated ride. A used r1200rt came into my life this year. I think it’s the perfect bike for cold weather riding. I’m in the Pacific Northwest here in the States and we are receiving lots of rain this fall. Riding in 10 degrees Celsius is a piece of cake. I usually ride with the heated seat and grips in the low settings. Fall riding will continue for me as long the happy meter is higher when I finish the ride than when I began the ride.
Heated seat sounds great, not an option on my Royal Enfield, have one in my car, good for the old bones. I like your phrase 'happy meter ' I'm sure most motorcyclists will agree with your sentiments. Raining here too at moment but dry Thursday, planning a short ride, forecast to be 0 degrees so my electric kit will be on High! Thanks for the comment, ride safe!
Hi always nice to hear of others winter riding gear. I'm in the English lakes and like you prefer my jeans. Have to say I nearly always have the long johns on from October to at least April. Can't see the point in being cold and ruining a ride for lack of clothing. You can always take it off. Is my opinion. Heated jacket for me with the sleeves, and can only say it's a game changer. Winter riding is now so much more pleasant. I got a size that fits over my Knox armoured shirt, so I don't have to wear a bike jacket if the occasion calls for it. Ride safe.
Thanks for comment, being cold can ruin a ride, back in the day we used our bikes as transport and wore the kit we had, now its riding for pleasure and better kit is available. Long johns have been purchased and worn on yesterdays ride and yes they made a difference. Jacket on my list for next year. 👍
Great tips on prepping for winter hikes! I’ve learned so much from this video. Personally, staying warm has always been tricky until I discovered Evofash heated jackets and gloves. They’re lightweight, stylish, and keep you toasty even in freezing temperatures. Highly recommend for anyone heading outdoors this winter! ❄
Interesting video. I’ve been following your Instagram for a while so it’s nice to see you come to life on film. I wear a mesh Merlin jacket myself with a removable liner and I find with layering underneath it covers every condition from 30 degree heat to cold bright days like you had here. I also prefer riding jeans, and I often wear long johns underneath for comfort. Couple of pairs of socks, heated grips/gloves, and you can enjoy that sunshine and still be appropriately dressed for your machine.
I've had quite a few Jackets in my time, I think this Merlin is the best all be it very heavy ( 8lb ). Long Johns are on the way, got to keep warm! Thanks for your comment.
I sometimes wonder about battery kit, all these wires are a bit of a faff when stopping to take photos etc. Still, keeps us warm that's the main thing, Thanks for comment 👍
Enjoyed the video. I'm thinking of getting some heated gear. Me and my Classic are up at the top of Powys and there are some lovely lanes in the county.
I agree great riding in Powys, in my opinion heated gear is the way to go, I've had my vest for about six years and have an adaptor to be able to use it in my van so its had plenty of use and is totally reliable.
Another new/antique subscriber, 81 this coming July. Now ride a Honda SH350i. I'll have to swop my thermals for some of that electric heated kit I think.
Thanks for comment and subscribing, much appreciated. Heated kit is a game changer for me, no more too cold for a ride, that is until the ice comes. Ride safe John
Good for you! Keep on riding. I'm a pensioner too and ride all year round (by choice!). Thermal gear is great, cheap on ebay and Amazon too. I wear a pair of Richa winter gloves with silk inner gloves underneath. I currently ride a Honda ADV 350 (which gives me some protection from the weather) and a Honda CL500 - which doesn't! Ride safe and enjoy. Love your bike by the way!
Thanks for the comment, I have a pair of thermal pants winging their way from Amazon, too late for todays short ride to Hay-on-Wye, hopefully here for next weeks cold spell. All the best
I too have a few pairs of decent gloves,,, but I also have some Held scooter muffs..it takes abit of time to get use to the switch gear ... but they do work and are cheap ,,unlike my Rukka gloves (150) I must have been mad
Nice video . Please bear in mind that if you get very cold your blood thickens and that can cause a Sean Connery . Better to have to much on that not enough , you can always strip off on the journey if you're melting . I remember coming back from Hairreford once on BBird and I was so cold I had to stop for a Navy Rum in Brecon .The roads around Builth are great but an hour from me in JackLand .
I ride down to 0deg regularly to work, never below as the risk of ice isn't worth it. Keis full jacket is amazing. 5-10 degrees it's actively hot. 0-5 you feel a little chill, but not feeling the -10 temp you get with windchill at 60! I want the Keis heated glove liners but they;re not in stock for 2 months.
Hi, enjoyed your video thanks 👍 I am up in Gwynedd and ejoy rides down into beautiful Powys ! A word of caution - I have/had a Keis full jacket but recently it stopped working and is back with Sportsbikeshop (who are excellent at dealing with any issues). Luckily I was near home when it went. If heated clothing malfunctions in colder weather and you're at the far end of a ride out, it could lead to getting seriously cold (I know someone who ended up in the Ysbyty with hypothetmia after a ride). The jacket, like your vest, is so effective but I will now take a full backup of warm clothing with me. So that kind of defeats the purpose of the heated jacket in a way, but the jacket still offers quick and easy variability according to temperature changes on a ride and low bulk on the body. So having considered asking for a refund I will probably stick with the Keis jacket when repaired/replaced. Meanwhile, I'm wearing a merino longsleave top; a Knox armoured jacket; a super cozy Rab down jacket and a Held water/wind proof shell. Like you, Im wearing jeans but Im obviously more delicate than you - in sub 8 Im wearing a pair of thermal tights; merino leggings, Aplkit Advent windproof walking trouser, topped off with Knox jeans. And heated grips. All that and Im all day cozy. Oh and a merino balaclava from Cotswold; its lightweight so doesn't affect helmet fit but keeps a bald head comfy 🥚:)
Good tip, never considered the heated jacket stopping working, will be sure to have something extra in pannier. Glad you enjoyed video, I must admit I enjoy making them more than I thought I would. Haven't worked out how to get emojis into these replies yet.
An update - I said Sportsbikeshop are good; I posted my faulty Kies jacket back to them last Wednesday and today Friday, a jacket is in the post back to me.
I,m also a Falco fan boy... when Falco first came to the UK I bought a pair of Falco Mixi s ,,excellent boots paid 130,, in my last year of work I needed a pair of boots so I too plumbed for the Falco Avaitors and yeah great comfy boots (but keep the zips lubed) I,m doing abit of offroad and the old Mixis are leaking (after 6yrs) I bought a pair of Gaerna gore tex boots (320) oh my goodness great boots ,, Italian leather is so good.. I have just about the best heated gear there is,,I have a warm/safe 90w jacket,, it takes too much from the battery on my Himalayan ,but on my RT I get cooked...,,,regards sir
I know what you mean about the power draw, the RE alternators are quite small. I changed head and side light bulbs to LED to compensate, also changed to a Yuasa battery. My older Falco are not now waterproof, ok in a shower, but comfortable and still plenty of dry weather riding left in them. Cheers!
Ah found your little yellow snack van near mellowcroft going West on the A44, it must be very good, Talking about riding, how do you cope with no screen? your jacket must be windproof?
Add windproofing outside gear, even rain gear , is the key element to a warmer ride. Canadian here
Thanks for comment, a lot colder for you in Canada I believe, saying that it's -1 here today with some light snow, too icy to ride, so far my Merlin wax jacket seems to be wind and waterproof. Take care...
@@powysriderrain pants over your jeans could help.

Leather motorcycle chaps that go on and off easily is a good idea 👍🏻 BTW I’m just 76 years old. Still riding too.
Same age as me, plenty of riding left I hope! Thanks for comment, cheers!
Excellent commentary from such a well-spoken gentleman with a good review about his winter riding kit👍. I shall subscribe 😁
Much appreciated!
Know those roads well! Really enjoyable video m8. Subscribed.

Thanks for comment, I remember having those elephant ears many years ago well before electric kit. We have never had it so good 😂Take care...
Gerbing heated gear. Excellent warmth and function. They have battery powered products as well as direct power from the MC battery.
Thanks for the info!

Ptahdus heated jacket battery operated works great. Carhartt overalls, biker boots, leather vest gloves , all good.

I've just found your channel, where was that beautiful road you were riding on at the beginning.
Hi, it's nr. Erwood in Powys the other side of the river Wye, good tea and cakes at Erwood Station Craft Centre, worth a visit!
