    What's the most annoying noise your aquarium makes, and how do you deal with it?

  • @unholyloaf
    @unholyloaf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +237

    That pump is advertised as silent. Tetra must have a different definition of "silent" to everyone else, because mine sounds like a diesel engine.

      I recently bought a Hailea ACO-9602 on Amazon that claims to be 'super silent', but is actually so noisy that it wrecks my domestic living environment. Consequently, I just put in a return request for a refund.

    • @Nine-Signs

      I think the person who checks these "silent" pumps in the factory must be slightly deaf.

    • @CrankCase08
      @CrankCase08 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I decided to stop faffing around with cheap pumps, so paid more for a Hailea ACO-208, which is rated at 18 watts. Things are much quieter now. To minimise the sound I suspend it in the air by the mains cable.

    • @BlatentlyFakeName

      Only really silent ones I own is a tiny 1 watt pump I have on a shrimp tank (made by Cambani). I own 2 but one has become noisy.

    • @Nine-Signs
      @Nine-Signs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CrankCase08 I'd screw a couple of small hooks into the case and suspend it off that. If off the mains cable as you mentioned, vibrations + weight over time may cause you problems. The flex though it seems robust is basically lamp wire. Not designed to support weight, neither is the internal grommet or widget that stops the cabke from tugging directly at the solder points.
      Best wishes.

      OK now that I've cleared the air and got that offensive post from Mark out of my mind I can stop playing around, get serious and ask my question.

    • @TheOpelkoenjas
      @TheOpelkoenjas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yep, it can get pretty noisy at some point, doesn't it. I myself don't even notice it anymore, but my wife on the other hand has problems sleeping sometimes and every little noise in the room keeps her awake then. I solved the rattle noise with a simple sponge taped to the air pumps, now I have to find a solution to the bubble sounds. They are homemade biological filters, made from plastic bottles, ceramic rings and black sponges in combination with air pumps. Kinda makes a lot of noise those things, but super effective I must say. And cheap. LOL

    The "Silent Giant" air pumps actually had the pumping apparatus inside a gravel filled container. They made no noise at all. Years ago, I put a noisy Hush 1 pump in a coffee can filled with gravel to silence it. That might work even better than suspending it in an empty jar.

On patio for plant drip cycle system, sitting in a corner it was way too loud for me to feel okay. I like my neighbors. Hung it in a black-square bucket. HUGE difference; not perfect but I intend to line with eggshell foam. Only a noticable drone when sitting on patio. Not throughout the courtyard!

    I was looking through some of your older stuff and I actually found three that I haven't seen till now and this is one of them. They are also the only three videos you have that didn't get a thumbs up from me... Till now :)
    There were and still are a few that I didn't like as much because of different reasons.
    A.) They were simple "common sense" but I give you the thumbs up anyway (because "common sense" isn't common these days. If things aren't bought up, people won't bother to notice them)
    B.) been done hundreds of times, by others with aquariums, vivariums or any other type of animal habitat. Thumbs up for the fact that you work hard at pointing out everything in detail, explaining as well as visual instructions giving everyone not just the "how" but more importantly, the "why"
    C.) I may have something that works better in my opinion or I though of ways to improve what you've done.
    365 days in a year

    I remember when you put this video out. This works amazing, by far the best way yo silence the pump. Very minimal noise. I came back again necause I have 2 noisy pumps in my livong room and they drive me nuts. Problem is, they're way too big for a jar. Is there any type of containers that work just as well as glass to insulate sound? Thanks Mark, you rule bro.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  ปีที่แล้ว

      unfortunaly not, it has to be a big glass jar or even something ceramic like a large pot, ive tried plastic and it doesnt work.

    Get a metal sleeve band and put it around the middle area and tighten the nut until the sound isn't loud.

  • @TheOpelkoenjas

    I just use a cheap thick sponge and let the pump sit on it. Done. No rattling noise anymore at all. And if you want to make sure the pump stays put all the time, just get a bit of ducktape and secure the pump to the sponge with it. It can't get any easier or cheaper if you ask me.
    Cheers.

    what about the heat? and where does the pump suck air from? it kinda looks like if it super tight seal air pump would just make a vacuum in the glass...

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its not sealed I say that in the video,also all a pump is is a magnet and a copper coil.

    • @jnrahm2038
      @jnrahm2038 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The coil is what generates the heat

    • @jnrahm2038
      @jnrahm2038 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      also keep in mind that hanging it from the wire means that in the long run you are going to damage the wire which is unsafe. So just keep an eye on the cable :)

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesnt produce heat like you think it does,the case is cold to the touch in normal use.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It will absolutely not do any damage to the cable it only weights about 1/2 kilo ,I could hang 5 kg on that wire and it would do nothing to it.
