    Thunder Blade (サンダーブレード Sandāburēdo?) is an arcade, flight-based, third-person rail shooter originally released for video arcades in 1987. In the game, players control a helicopter to destroy enemy vehicles.
    The game was released as standard stand-up arcade cabinet that introduced the use of force feedback, as the joystick vibrates during gameplay. A sit-down unit was also released, replacing the force feedback with a seat that moves in tandem with the joystick.
    Versions of the game were later released for the Sega Master System, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, MSX, TurboGrafx-16, Sharp X68000 and ZX Spectrum. The Nintendo 3DS remake was released as a 3D Classic in Japan on August 20, 2014, in North America and Europe on May 14, 2015, and in Australia on July 2, 2015.
    A follow-up, Super Thunder Blade, was released exclusively for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.
    GAMEPLAY
    The game's plot and setting resembles the 1983 film and 1984 TV series of Blue Thunder. The player controls a helicopter using guns and missiles to destroy enemy tanks, helicopters, etc., to save his home country. Levels are in both a top-down or third-person perspective view. The boss levels are in the top-down view.

      I played the C64 version to death as a kid and loved it - it had all the basic elements of the arcade with a roaring soundtrack to boot. A very solid conversion.

    It's ridiculous how the Amiga ports of arcade games were often more difficult than the originals.

    X68000 port is the best by far. The PC Engine comes in second here. The Mega Drive port doesn't even have the overhead scenes so I wouldn't exactly say it's "Super".

    • @bangerbangerbro
      @bangerbangerbro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RyuHayabusa06 Especially since the overhead scenes are surely easier for the hardware to do.

    Holy Christ, I'm impressed with what they managed on the Speccy version. All the 8-bit micro versions give it a good stab, though the C64 version probably wins by compromising visuals for speed and smoothness. Shame the Master System one falls apart as soon as it goes 3D.
    Though I've got to say, ports like this make me wish we could have bought the X68000 in Europe.

    • @bangerbangerbro
      @bangerbangerbro 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if you could have bought it in Europe it would have been 5 (3?) times as expensive as an Amiga or whatever it was (so an Archimedes would have been cheap by comparison) and companies probably would still have found a way to make crap ST ports.

      You must be joking, right? This is a particularly rare page in the book of 80's arcade ports to domestic hardware, because each and every 8 bit computer version of this one had its merits and all of them were above average efforts in the end, but gameplay-wise the C64 port was the most playable and technically impressive of the bunch by a long shot. Credit where credit is due.

    • @8bvg300
      @8bvg300 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      C64 is doing an amicable job of it.
      SMS is also pretty reasonable given the time it was made. I'd say that the graphics are the best fitting with the system it's on, some of these lean too hard towards the arcade, that the system can't possibly replicate them.
      Atari ST was a nightmare, showing what a difference a few fps can make with the Amiga port.
      Once again the x6800 blows everything else away!

    Mega Drive version needed a bit more work before Sega released it. If PC Engine got the overhead scenes in, Sega could have also. I guess it was just rushed for launch. Best computer versions are X68000 and C64 (Chris Butler is amazing).

    Thunder Blade I have played it so many times at a local pizza parlor growing up. It was an unique gaming experience for the time. Super Thunder Blade not a big fan of mainly because of the sound. Always thought SEGA could do better. Anyhow a few weeks a go I picked up SEGA 3D Classics Collection for the Nintendo 3DS and it includes Thunder Blade the original arcade version. I do enjoy playing it on my 3DS but a part of me wants to play it the way it was originally intended. Anyhow I enjoyed the video and you do excellent work and keep them coming.

    X68000 - Best port
    PC Engine - Close second
    C64 - Good port for the hardware
    As far as the Genesis version, Super Thunder Blade, it's mainly a pseudo sequel to the original game, kinda like Space Harrier 2.

    Only mistake is the sound and music from the Sega Master System Thunder Blade was different than in this video. About the game speed i think that the Master System did very great compared to the shame disgrace the Mega Drive did which is strange since MD = 16 bit so stronger than MS = 8 bit . PC version is ok too . The rest are bad , i don't count the Tiger one since it has no valuable comparaison to the rest .

      @GamingHistorySource  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you want talking I suggest that you look at Retrocore. He has a series called battle of the ports & he talks in them. These videos are meant to be a resource for footage if you are looking for a certain type. I don't talk in the video because I want to give the viewers free reign to discuss their ideas, opinions, & memories on the games. My opinions & personal feelings would corrupt the spirit of the videos.

      Amiga Thunder Blade is (was) remake of the Atari ST version
      the only difference is Amiga TB had 32 colours on screen
      cartridges were expensive game developers wanted to keep costs down early Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive games such as Super Thunder Blade were put on 4 Mbits megabits

  • @bangerbangerbro
    @bangerbangerbro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Atari ST has a faster CPU than the Amiga and yet it's ports are always slower. The Amiga doesn't have any special scaling hardware so it shouldn't be any faster. What Amiga did you emulate? Then again, lots of the stuff that needs all the scaling is flat shaded, and the blitter is designed to be able to do that.
