Solo travel is scary for a woman. In the last year I have started writing a blog. I have also been on a solo cruise during that time. Carrying around that journal made all the difference. I guess it was my companion. I could people watch, listen to music, eat and view the scenery...and write. Yes, there were times I felt alone-alone but I could write about that too. AND I was able to do the excursions I wanted to, just as you described.
This is an experience I am planning on repeating.
For single women of all ages (I am 69), solo travel is an exercise. You can stretch those travel muscles and become stronger for it. Ooh, I think I will go write about that.
    Thanks for your video.

Last year I took a trip to the city where I had graduated from university in 1977. I hadn't been back since then but I wanted to see the place one more time. My hotel was 5 minutes from the Art Gallery and it was the highlight of the trip. I had planned to go back the next day to spend time sitting in front of a particular portrait but there was severe flooding and had to cut short the trip. I also went to a restaurant for lunch and took great pleasure in leaving a very generous tip for the young staff who were so attentive and didn't make me feel awkward sitting by myself. A bittersweet trip as my health no longer allows me to travel. I can still see the painting that so inrigued me in my mind.

Great topic Tim! I love going to rock concerts alone, as well as going to see movies in the theater or eating alone in a restaurant. There is something very freeing about not having to take someone else’s preferences into consideration.

Absolutely true and correct! Anywhere I go, I go hard researching where I'm going. I'm 64 female and I started travelling solo for the first time 6 years ago. I travelled solo from Australia, I've been to Vegas twice, Hawaii and New Zealand. I love the uncertainty, the unknown, doing what I want and when. I love the cultures and nature of places, where a few of my friends would just prefer to lay on a beach all day, I love that too, but not all day long when there are more enriching things to experience. The experiences I have had, I would never have had if I was with anyone else. I was very proud of my resilience even though I was nervous as all get out, and I did have some scary moments. I must say though, when I had a layover in LA airport, the customs guy really grilled me about why I suddenly decided to travel at my age (Iwas 58 at thetime), by myself and having no one to visit while there. That was awful, I think he thought I might have become a drug mule in my old age 😅🤦🏼‍♀️.

Tim, I cried when you said you'd be our first subscriber. It was the way you said it.
I love to travel! I retired early at 62 due to a health issue so traveling isn't a possibility right now. Over the years I've been up the east coast, traveled to Washington State and San Diego, to Mexico a few times, and once to Hawaii. Hopefully I'll be able to travel again soon.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my husband just over a year ago, and a few weeks before a vacation we had planned together, we had only been married 36 years. I went on that trip solo and adjusted it for what I could do. I am so glad I went, because I met people I would not have met and made friends I would not have made if I was with my husband. I still feel the loss, but solo travel has made me more confident in my own abilities and has given the the gift of being able to explore what makes me happy or learn something new that intrest me. I did not realize just how much traveling with my husband was based on what he wanted or could do. I will pray that you can find peace and fulfillment in your life as a solo.

Solo is not for me! I don’t even like to eat at a restaurant by myself. Before my dear husband passed away, we got in our car and spent almost 2 months just traveling throughout the US, from the Pacific to the Atlantic . No plans, just seeing whatever sights we wanted to see. If we wanted to stay in a place we liked a little longer, we did . I cannot imagine ever doing that trip by myself! We even purchased a wooden plaque that read: ‘It doesn’t matter where you go in life, it’s who you have beside you’. I am sorry to disagree with you, Tim. If I want to learn about myself now, I meditate each day and reflect. 🤔

This is really speaking to me! For years, as a single, I’ve traveled with a companion (who let me plan everything!), but my next stop is South Africa. I want to do a safari-the eco/animal friendly kind! And none of my companions want to go. I’m going to do it by myself! Well, I’ll probably do a group tour.

I agree that spending time traveling by yourself is great because of the ability to do just what you want to do. At the same time I do like traveling with others because of the shared memories. My husband and I try to accommodate these desires by separating for a day during travel. We agree to separate - for example, I get to go to museums he isn't interested in and he rents a bike and tour the city. Then we meet up back at the hotel. We do the same when we travel with others. One couple wants to go to a different city we just meet up again at another city. At home each us is free to go alone or with someone else to wherever. We are both going to come home.

I have traveled alone a few times but honestly, I prefer someone with me on trips. Luckily my husband and I share the same interests and enjoy the same types of activities. We just like traveling and doing adventures together whether it's near or far. When I say adventures, it could be just a day trip somewhere fairly close - like an hour or two away or even closer than that. I have traveled with my mom and my daughter a few times and just me and a friend.

I’m in Yorkshire, UK and I have taken solo trips to London for a couple of nights and loved it. I’ve sat in the Dorchester bar on my own having an expensive cocktail people watching and enjoyed every minute.
My husband and I go away with a single friend occasionally. We all do our own thing during the day then meet up for dinner and drinks. The friend and I will go to the same art gallery together but once there he goes his way and I go mine. Nothing worse than traipsing round looking at pictures that don’t interest you.
I wish I had the courage to travel abroad on my own but don’t think I ever will.

It was a growth experience for me. Thank you for also including a nod to finances. I don’t have deep pockets but that doesn’t preclude me from having travel experiences. I am married and have kids, and live near a large city. 15 years ago I made the decision to start going to concerts alone, often small venues or bars, often lesser known performers. I've probably seen 15-20 acts with friends and a few with my wife over the last 15 years. I've probably ventured out alone 75 times including a few short festivals during that span of time. Once you pass 30 years of age it gets harder and harder to find a friend that is both able to attend and desires to attend. Then of course there is the friend that backs out at the last minute or forgets to pay you for the ticket. You know the drill. Still it's always more fun to go with a friend or group of friends excited to be there, but that's rare. Never had problems or failed to make it home...with the exception of one evening. We had nothing planned for NYE 2020 before Covid hit. I went to a concert alone, had fun with some random jovial fans, had one too many drinks and ended up sleeping or trying to sleep in a near empty parking garage on a cold night at age 43! Pretty pathetic. Embarrassing. That's not really cool or safe at any age. This was in a large, not-so-safe part of the city. I didn't want to risk driving in that condition on that night or any night. I told my wife I was going to crash at the office, but that was a lie. In conclusion, traveling alone can be a good way to expand your horizons, BUT don't be a fool. Don't get too crazy. Don't press your luck.

We’ve learned to allow each other that time and space, I recently visited Cuzco and Manchu Pichu for 10 days so that I could do it all at my own pace. It was a wonderful time. Solo Solo all the Way!!!!
I Loved this video so much watched it twice, will watch again later. I was hanging on every word… Lol, you certainly got my attention when you said: navigating unfamiliar territory and facing challenges contributes yo growth, and you have to step up to the plate and figure it out yourself… Hallelujah!!! Then you know what you are made of and builds confidence.
I went through this travelling during Civid overseas, and our Canadian government implemented the Arrivecan app .. you couldn’t travel without it.. what a hassle for someone like me in their 60’s , not techie well ..I could write book on it. I like to do whatever I want , when I want,,, Have had too many unpleasant experiences with travel buddies no more fir me.
Tim bravo for conveying this to us all in such a well thought out well informed manner.. you must have been an excellent teacher…
    Thankyou for sharing .😊

Lately everyone seems to be pushing people to do things alone, but for me, growing up without friends to do things with and then spending decades in a bad marriage, I have spent FAR too much time doing things alone. I’d really like to finally get a chance to enjoy something with someone else. 🥺

Good morning Tim. Congratulations on your weight loss!!! I agree with you on everything you said. However, personally, I would do it a bit different. Maybe because I'm a woman, senior and never traveled alone to a completely different place without having family members be on the other side of my destination. I would like to go with at least one person to get a feel of the culture if it's outside of USA, get a feel of the environment, and so forth. Then, I would go solo knowing what to expect. Thanks for the suggestions. I love to travel even if it's within the USA. It's fun and adventurous.

For my 50 th birthday present I wished a solo travel to the north of India. Even though I could have gone with my husband (who wouldn’t have enjoyed India) or one or two of my grown up children. I wanted to take the benefit of doing exactly what I wanted. A highlight of my life.

My older daughter has been a solo traveler for many years and has loved it, even with all its ups and downs. However, she did not get the adventure gene from me. I rarely travel anywhere anymore, other than a yearly plane trip with my adventurous daughter, to visit my mom in Albuquerque. I’ve gradually let fear make my decisions, which really bothers me and I am currently working on it. This (wonderful) daughter now lives in Glasgow with her husband and really wants me to visit so she sent me a gift card for an afternoon tea touring either Glasgow or Edinburgh on a big red bus. I’m really looking forward to it, however, I just have to figure out how to get over being anxious about flying a longer distance than ever before, over a large body of water, and possibly at night 😳. You don’t seem to have any flying issues but if you have any suggestions, I would love to know any tips and tricks- I’m collecting them! 🤓

Just ran into your channel...directly hit the bell (:
I far away from retirement, but someday, I will for sure. So listening to someone like you is very beneficial. Like the way you talk and being so natural in front of the camera. I have start (re)learning English and your channel contains not only interesting topics, I use it also for leaning English ( I can't learn a language the classic way, I chose watching TH-cam videos instead 🤗). So keep on the great work, I am your latest newest follower 🥳

I hope you'll be journaling on your trip. Buy a piece of art as well. My sister traveled the world on her own and the friends she met are still in contact with her. She has some wonderful pieces of art that she collected along the way. My favourite the aboriginal one and her pieces are on the walls of her home to remind her of her trips all those years ago.

I traveled alone enough when I was working. The first time I was in Italy, I decided to go to Rome by myself for the weekend. As soon as I got off the train, a local guy sidled up to me. I was able to get away from him without incident. I went on a tour of the Vatican, and while waiting in line, a group of U.S. military members told me I shouldn’t be there alone. (You’d think they could protect me!) Finally, I tried going to a restaurant by myself. They insisted on seating me with an American couple, even though I told them I was fine eating alone. Bet they were thrilled they picked that restaurant! I was glad I went, but I would much rather travel with other people. To each his own!

I hadn't flown in years, and last year finally scheduled a solo small trip. The most important things I found out were: (1) No matter how much research you do, something will surprise you; (2) you can meet some very nice people who will help you if you're lost; and (3) I don't want to be tethered to a rolling bag, so I'm on the search for a lightweight rolling backpack. 😂

I really enjoyed this video. I love to travel and take 3-6 weeks away every year. I prefer to drive if it is not more than 16 hrs. While many times I travel alone I enjoy traveling with friends or family for at least part of the time. My husband and I traveled throughout the UK and Europe in 1968 via train and bicycles for 8 weeks. We spent 1 week in Poland when it was behind the iron curtain and stayed with a great aunt. He has been gone 14 years and I really miss traveling with him. The most memorable trips have been with family. My daughter was married in Costa Rica. 32 people came to the wedding and we all stayed for a week. She planned the itinerary but we chose if we wanted to do it. I passed on the zipline and repelling down a waterfall, but chose to horseback ride to the volcano on my own. My son in the same year was married in the Bahamas and again a large number of people attended for the week. He and his fiancé paid for a wine and cheese cruise on a sailboat for just our group and then dinner afterward. I lucked out with 3 kids who all paid for their own weddings and most of their college education. Another fun time was spending Christmas on Kauai with my daughter and her in-laws. They rented a house for the 13 of us. I am very flexible and like going along with what others choose. Now I travel with my college roommate who is also a widow. In 2022 we took an Alaska cruise and last year we spent 12 days in HI and 8 in WI. Next week it will be FL alone and this spring it will be AZ with my friend.

I don't mind traveling alone, however, trips I've taken require the "group" dine together, leaving me to be the "odd" person being seated with strangers. The problem there is, people trying to be friendly and asking to many questions to break the ice. Where you from, why are you traveling alone, etc. I've recently lost my son, I'm very uncomfortable continually telling my story... I want to be alone!

Traveling solo has its benefits, but I prefer to travel with a trustworthy and compatible companion. As a woman I think about my safety first. The coin has two sides, and anything can happen. This includes getting food poisoning, being harassed by beggars, and getting lost in the wrong place. Some experiences are more fun when they are shared.

I'm actually planning a road trip to Boston to visit my son and daughter-in-law this spring! I've been solo for decades, so traveling alone is nothing new BUT I typically fly when going long distances (they used to live on the west coast but moved to Boston last year). However, I'm not getting any younger and I have decided to drive (I live in KC) this time. Also have a friend in NC that I think I'll stop by and visit on my way home. I will definitely think about recording my travel. What kind of camera would you suggest? I have my android phone of course but would that be enough? I'm thinking maybe a dash cam of some sort?
