    If I was diagnosed with Dementia or any disease where your memory goes & you have no real sense of what's going on or your previous life, then I would want to die. Having someone care for me isn't fair on them & my own quality of life would be so bad it'd be pointless.

      But.. what if you would be happy?
      To you it seems horrible being in that state of losing track of time and losing memories. But dementia patients can still lead happy lives, dealing with more youthful memories. For relatives it usually is the hardest, because they are no longer recognized and do remember things the patient has forgotten.
      So, in terms of quality of life... the case isnt always as clear.
      Dementia patients do ultimately lose more motor control in later stages; become increasingly dependant and ultimately die after being stuck in bed for a long time.
      But, in terms of autonomy... when would you decide to stop your life? You will be confused sometimes, but you dont suffer all the time, as the memories fade. The moment you do start suffering, you wont be able to remember your plans either...
      To prevent dementia, you would have to die well before reaching the mid stage of the disease... Quality of life vs length of time - where would be the mark?
      I personally wouldnt end by life, but probably sign a form to opt not to be hooked up on life support for too long. Or perhaps put that decision with my family members; giving them the option to pull the plug. Along with writing my will, well in advance.

    I live with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. I am only 24 and one of the oldest with this heart condition. The only reason why I have this is because my mother was a heavy drug user. I am very happy living my life, but I know there are young infants with this same condition being kept alive by machines. I am very fortunate to be so strong given the state my heart is in. If I ended up needing machines to stay alive, I would like to peacefully leave my life. To me the quality of my life is doing what I love best. Living on machines would take that all away from me, so I see no reason to live my life as unhappy and suicidal. If I were to ever become pregnant, not only would it kill me, but the fetus would become very sick with all the medications I take. that fetus would most likely die, but if it does live it would have a very sort life.
    Clearly I support abortion for medical and mental reasons. I support someones choice to pass on with dignity, and parents choice to give their child up due to many complications.
    As a person who does have to fight for her life every day, I see no point in keeping someone or animal around if they are clearly in pain and suffering.

Using authority that is not justified to prevent the ending of suffering is unacceptable in a compassionate and humane society. As a physically disabled man, I don't buy into the premises of this debate. Moralists always have strength enough to bear the misfortunes of others. Defending life at the cost of the pain of others is a horrible thing to do. Implementing that moral mandate collocates you at the pinnacle of human arrogance, sadism, and cruelty. I have a very simple test. If you think a particular life is worth living, you should go and live it _yourself._ If you won't do that, at the very least you should stay away from politics.

So if someone has already a born child who became permanently disabled due to an illness or an accident and the parents are in crippling debt due to medical bills, should they be able to kill the child? I would say health care system has to change, as has policy and society, to be less utilitarian and truly value human life. That was the Human Rights Declaration intention. There's still a personal liberty argument to be made about a fetus with a severe disability. It just has to do with the woman's personal liberty, not the fetus's, because choosing to give birth, whether through labor or c-section, is a choice that comes with significant risk to one's life. If one finds out that their child that they desire very much will be born with severe disability, there is still an argument based on personal liberty as to whether or not the mother should be allowed to decide whether the risk of childbirth is worth taking in that instance.

    • @ShrustiTripathy
      @ShrustiTripathy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think by using the personal liberty argument, you are implying that a disabled child is somehow valued as less than and that is construed as discrimination against the disabled. If we are using the high risk of childbirth as reasoning used by a woman, it applies equally in either case of pregnancy. However, a fetus with disability may be a higher risk childbirth (sorry if that is actually what you mean and I didn't catch it)...

    • @courtneycanchari5161
      @courtneycanchari5161 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShrustiTripathy Good question. I was elaborating on a point made in the video about personal liberty in regards to a woman's right to choose under what circumstances she is willing to risk her own life. Your argument does not address personal liberty, it addresses value of life which is irrelevant to what I was saying. To illustrate that, using the same reasoning your argument can be flipped around by arguing that you are implying that the possibility of survival for a disabled fetus (not child) is more valued than a woman's right to make decisions regarding her own safety.
      I hope you can see how that makes as little logical sense as your previous comment. Because personal liberty and value of life are two separate arguments. The problem this video clarified is that quite often when discussing issues of life and death these arguments are conflated in exactly this manner, creating an impasse to the discussion.

    Don't most beings want to live more than they want to avoid pain? Foxes will gnaw off their own limbs that get caught in a trap rather than wait around to be killed by the hunter who placed them. There was that based-on-true-events movie about a guy who went hiking alone (never do that!) in Utah and got his arm trapped under some rocks and had to do something similar to survive.
    I might think to myself, "I would rather die than have to cut off my own arm", but placed in that situation, I probably would do it, and I think most people would to. The desire to survive in many cases trumps the desire to avoid pain.

    There is nothing to debate on these three issues. All three need to be legal and fully accessible. There has never been a tenable argument to oppose any of these. Those who oppose them usually do so in an emotionally-charged state, without actually taking a reasoned, rational, evidence-based approach to thinking about these issues.

    • @nathanroberts3082
      @nathanroberts3082 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The argument isn't so much whether they should be allowed or not, to me it's obvious they should be. The problem is about specifics: where do you draw the line? You'd basically have to evaluate each specific case in detail and even then people will have different opinions about what is "right" or "wrong".

      It's not that simple. I am pretty sure they can only give you percentages some times for abnormalities during birth. It's one thing to say your baby WILL be blind deaf and dumb. It is another to say 95%. What if it's a coin flip? While I wouldn't judge you, I could see why people would start to get uncomfortable when all of a sudden it is normal to abort someone just because they are deaf.

      Why do you think abortion should be legal and fully accessible? Im genuinely curious.
      I think taking a life without their consent is immoral because it deprives them of a future of experiences. Simple as that. I don't see why abortion would be an exception to that rule.
      Some may argue that abortion's ok because a foetus "can't feel pain" or "isn't conscious" or "has no desires", but the same could be said of a sleeping person. A sleeping person isn't conscious and has no desires, and could be killed painlessly.
      So unless one thinks that its ok to kill a person painlessly in their sleep, I don't see why they should think its ok to kill a foetus (or even a zygote, for that matter).

    • @Ladifour
      @Ladifour 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Saeed Baig Umm, no. That is a strawman. A sleeping person is conscious. If they weren't, they couldn't dream or wake up. Every time you would go to sleep you would terminate a consiousness, therefore taking a life. If you valued life you would have a duty to every future you, which would consist of either not sleeping through a miraculous technology or dying. You would prevent the death of every future "you". Of course it isn't so as the stream of consciousness continues from childhood to death.
      If you are talking about someone who has experienced brain death (not a coma), it is absolutely justified to end the upkeep of a bag of cells.

What happens when we stop valuing life? It's such a logical and reasonable yet uncompassionate stance to take. And from what I've seen, nothing good comes from a growing lack of compassion. Any thoughts on this?

      As with most beliefs, its effect is dependent on how you view things. While it is easy to picture the awful acts that could be (and have been) done without a care for any inherent value of life, that is not the necessary outcome.
      I would argue the losing the idea of an inherent value for life could be an empowering idea if treated correctly. Much like the effect of existentialism, it encourages people to take control of their own lives and make it worth living, rather than merely accepting pain after pain because they feel they should be happy with their life because it is valuable. So long as we hold the lives of other persons to be as valuable as they choose, there doesn't seem to be any harm in the belief of no inherent value.

    • @GregTom2
      @GregTom2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't make any sense to say "life ultimately has no inherent value" and then say "choice and autonomy has inherent value". Life and sentience demonstrably exist. Choice and autonomy are demonstrably a social construct. Why anyone would say that autonomy has value but not survival is beyond me.

    I believe that abortion is a personal matter and should be handled at the level of the individual. The economic and emotional repercussions of keeping a child are astronomical. If you have the opportunity to keep a child and drop out of school or abort the child and become a doctor (a job that saves lives) what do you do? You can now provide an upperclass life for your actual children and contribute to society in a way more significant than your loins
