    Zoysia is unbelievable! We had a property where we neglected the grass for 10 years. Part of the lawn was Zoysia & the other Bermuda. 10 years of no pesticides, fertilizers, or watering...not ONCE. The Bermuda area basically is now all weeds. The Zoysia is thick, lush & beautiful. It is completely drought & weed resistant. It may be more expensive to put down initially but you will NEVER need weed killer or pesticides again. Some people don't like the fact that it turns yellow in the winter time (at least it does in the North East). I would never use another grass again. Per this video I think we have the Zoysia Z52.

    Thank you for your video! I am a new homeowner dealing with lawn care for the first time. I live in North Florida. I'm about to have my backyard resolded and this was a great breakdown of all the different grasses. Was discussing zoysia with my lawn care service the other day I have partial shade in the backyard and some sunny spots. I think the zoysia actually would be a better choice all around. Didn't know that there were two types we'll mention this to I'm sure he knows. Thanks again!

      Their are actually 7 or 8 different varieties of Zoysia, I would stay away from Meyer Z 52 because it creates way to much thatch.

    This information really helped me! I've been wondering what type of grass I have in order to figure out how next to fix some issues. I definitely have Bermuda and have some shaded areas and north facing areas that are essentially moss at this point. I've got some leveling and drainage to deal with but overseeding with zoysia in those bare areas seems like the next step and should blend well enough.

    Thank you for this video. I live in Pennsylvania. I am almost positive I have zoysia grass. I always said it's as thick as a carpet. No weeds. Kind of scratchy to sit on. Turns brown in the winter..Spreads by rhizomes. So a couple months ago we had renovations done where the company drove bulldozers and diggers on my lawn. With the promise of reseeding and top dressing, I was OK with it... Well, let me tell you, I didn't think for one second that the grass was going to be completely different from my existing beautiful lawn. I believed he used a blend of bluegrass, rye and whatever else cold weather grass is.. Oh and crabgrass! I never had so much in my life. The lawn looks pretty spotty with loads of weeds. It's also a different color. You can see a clear line where the old grass is. I'm not too happy about it. I've been researching how to fix it. Your video was the first I saw that described what I believe is what we have. Being that I'm in the cold climate can I still overseed with zoysia? How will that look? I need your HELP !!

    • @Therampage27
      @Therampage27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am in NJ so i have a similar climate to you. Zoysia is not available in seed for us. You will have to get zoysia plugs or sod to fill in bare spots, but this is fairly expensive and zoysia does not spread quickly. Alternatively you can apply pre-emergents before summer to stop crabgrass and just let the bluegrass do it's thing.

    • @trustHimforlife

      @@Therampage27 thank you for your reply . I talked to a landscaper and he suggested thatching the zoysia and spreading the rye blend. I guess I'm not getting my beautiful zoysia back. :(... I will treat the crabgrass in the early spring. Thanks!

    I absolutely love centipede...lowest cost to maintain of all the varieties mentioned. Mowed at 2", very showy appearance and great feel under foot. If fertilized with a bit of extra iron, can be a darker Kelly green instead of its' native light green color with proper irrigation.

    • @TheDesertRat31
      @TheDesertRat31 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like centipede as well. I also cut it around 2", maybe slightly higher since I don't think my deck is set perfectly. I'm in NC. The ag extensions recommend 1.5" cut height but when I've tried that it never looks it's best. Seems like it's stressed. Around 2" and it seems to like that better. Also. I don't have irrigation so those low cuts are rough in mid to late summer temps.

      Lots of weeds, clover, and tree saplings popping up.
      How or can I revive my lawn?
      We sodded it 30 yrs ago, one square at a time.

Our soil is very sandy, no topsoil. My backyard (Zoysia) is doing great where as my front lawn (Centipede) is dying out and eroding. My question is, can I plant Zoysia seeds over my Cenetipede lawn? Or is the centipede to aggressive and will choke out the Zoysia?

    Great video - thanks.... I'm in the Huntsville, AL area - I can't seem to beat Creeping Charlie no matter what kind of grass I have. Made the mistake mentioned about wrong grass in wrong application - Bermuda in a shaded back yard and fescue in a sunny front yard. The first season the fescue was beautiful - second season I had creeping charlie and a drought - I used an Ortho product that nearly killed the fescue and didn't put a dent in the creeping charlie. Unfortunately sodded the back very late in the 2019 season and nearly dormant Bermuda was all the nursery could provide -- looked good in March but has struggled all summer. Not to worry, though - I signed a contract with TruGreen in April and they have pretty much destroyed it all so I get to try plugs next year....

      Nolan Denton
      Creeping Charlie is just too invasive to fight back in a large yard with lots of shade and my preference not to use a lot of chemicals. I let it go as a ground cover in some areas. I have many fruiting vines and trees so I’d rather not drown my yard with poisons just to have a weed free lawn.

    What's the best method to break up hard picked soil over time? My soil has a lot of clay and gets hard packed. I usually have it aerated then apply Sand or Sandy Loam in a thin layer on top, which my St Augustine loves. But then by the following year it's all packed again. My neighbor says to spread Gypsum on top and that would help break down the hard packed clay. Any thoughts? Great video, thanks!

      @amya971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s probably ideal for where you live, but it’s nearly impossible in the panhandle of TX. What I do know about tall fescue is that you really need to keep it around 4” in the early spring and keep it up, so it tolerates the heat later in the summer.

    i live in new england so its almost exclusively cool season grass. because of this during the summer growth just about comes to a complete stop. i was thinking about suggesting to the customers that we blend buffalo grass with kentucky bluegrass and st augustine with everything else. i imagine this will allow for continuous growth throughout the year so we dont have to switch to bi weekly or worse once a month mowing schedules during the summer which definitely hurts income. what do you think about this idea?

    I live in NC and I'm sick of my fescue looking like crap in the dog days of summer and in the dead of winter. I have it treated for weeds and fertilized through TruGreen (about to fire them) and by August the weeds still tend to take over. Then I go through the cost of aerating and re-seeding in fall, but it usually doesn't look very nice in Jan & Feb, especially if we have a cold winter. I haven't gone with a warm season grass in the past due to it going dormant for 4-5 months out of the year, but if my fescue is going to look like crap for 4 months out of the year a warm season grass might be more economical. And there is the option to overseed if you don't mind mowing year round (it's a fairly small yard). Anyone out there have good success with a warm season grass as a replacement for fescue in central NC?

      For centipede you should wait till day temps of 80 degrees and night temps of 70 degrees. Soil temp should be at least 70, and night temps are an indicator of soil temp. I had to wait till the middle of June to get these conditions in central Alabama. Sprouts began a week ago.

      Centipede likes a more acid soil... 5.5 PH... Do a soil test.

    Thank you for the information. About two years (2017) ago, I bought a house in the Fort Worth, Texas area. The yard was mostly St. Augustine with some common Bermuda grass. My issue is that both of my side neighbors have only Bermuda (the carpet type) and I'm the odd man out. The first spring in the house, the St. Augustine had issues coming back (very dry looking), so I racked a lot of it out and over-seeded the area with Bermuda. Now I have a mixture of the two, but I think the Bermuda is taking over (slowly). Should I continue this or do I need to start over; meaning till all out and plant only Bermuda grass?

    • @lawncarelife
      @lawncarelife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure which grass type will take over in that situation. I've had Bermuda and centipede mixed together and the centipede usually wins out. If you do decide to plant bermuda, it spreads very fast. If it were my yard, I would probably spray something on the lawn that St Augustine does not like and let the Bermuda take over that way. I don't think it would be necessary to seed or resod

    I’m in the Chattanooga, TN. area, and need to seed a brand new lawn from scratch. My 1 acre property is almost all shade. I want a warm season variety and was considering zoysia, but when you say “partial sun” does that just that mean “daylight” gets through, or does that mean actual direct sunlight for part of the day? My property isn’t so covered with tree canopy that it’s “dark”, but it is covered in shade all day long. Any recommendations on what grass variety would be best will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    • @lawncarelife
      @lawncarelife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you need to go with a cool season grass. Zoysia is probably your best option for warm season grasses but it would be hard to get going from seed and would not tolerate too much shade

    How do I kill crabgrass in my Bermuda lawn? I found a product called Tenacity, had great reviews and testimonials, but the bottle says not on Bermuda...
    I been picking seed stalks for the last 3 years, and it has helped and it’s not as bad as 5 years ago, but I can’t get em all.
    I’ve tried various pre emergents, various Scott’s products, etc.

    • @lawncarelife

      You probably could get away with a Fescue on there but I much more familiar with warm season grasses. I'm personally like zoysia lawns. Bermuda Lawns are probably the most common in our area and would be quite a bit cheaper to put down at sod than zoysia

I want a grass that doesn’t creep like Bermuda and Zoysia grasses that is next to impossible to keep out of the shrubs and garden beds. I'm not sure about adding it to Bermuda but if you want to kill the Bermuda and then put downs zoysia. Unless by adding at you are simply talking about adding it into beer areas that doesn't currently have Bermuda. I have not seen many people successfully grow Zoysia from seed though I have heard people plugging it. Most people around here simply lay it as sod
