I spent 28 out of 35 years as a gliding instructor teaching in the ASK21 and ASK13 and have 2,000 hours on gliders. With its wood and fabric wings the ASK13 is great for teaching all of the stall and spinning exercises, whereas the fibreglass ASK21 has better performance and is better suited for teaching soaring skills. It's great to hear that you learnt to fly on gliders, the co-ordinated stick and rudder skills are a proven skill set for both commercial and military flying careers. Thanks for your excellent videos.
I know what you mean with that special place in your heart. My first plane was the Blanik L-13. I eventually became a instructor. My first powered aircraft was the Wilga 80 by PZL. I soloed in it after 5 hours of training. I loved them both. I did this all in Ontario Canada.
Many years ago I used to fly in a Blanik in Otago New Zealand and your video has got me really interested in this aircraft. I am reminded of the need to constantly plan ahead to ensure you always have a place to land and I remember the thrill of flying in the northwesterly wave that used to develop atop inland mountain ranges. I also like being able to just jump in and fly with little fuss and being challenged to read and manage conditions constantly hands on. Thanks again for a great video.
Happy to see the ASK21 coming on MSFS. I also started flying on this school glider (we had two ones at that time) and did my solo and the final examination on them ten years ago. Then I flew DG505 and Discus CS but the robust, forgiving (and heavy) ASK21 remain in my hearth. A salute from south Switzerland! ❤❤❤❤❤
This is the loveliest video of yours Emmanuel! My career path is the same more or less. Now Im doing the ATPL Theory. I stared with the R-26 Góbé. Happy landings!!
The ASK21 was the first aircraft that I learned to fly, back in my FSX days. It’s by far my favorite glider. I had the Aerosoft version in FSX. I contacted Aerosoft to see if they had any plans to release it in MSFS. Sadly, they said no. I’m so glad that somebody stepped up to the task and brought it into MSFS.😊
This is great. I have started flying the ASK21 about 6 Months ago and am looking forward to my first solo flights. Its a great aircraft with nice capabilities. Although this surely is a nice step-up from other simulations, i have found it hard to replicate this feeling in the Sim or even study a bit, maybe this will change. Something I have not yet heared of is having the front "cable-plug" beeing used for Whinch cable ops, we usually use the rear one for our operations. The front one is used for towing and rare other cases in our operations. We also have wheels at both wings, maybe a modification that just our Club has installed. Also, another small correction: The yellow triangle is the minimum speed you need to fly at maximum weight, below that you will risk "stalling". I also thought this in the beginning, but then my Flight Instructor told me otherwise.
Agree, simulating a glider is difficult. There is so much "feeling" involved, the good old "Popometer". I still vividly remember my first solo 12 years ago (I was 15 yo). When the winch cable disconnected I just had to scream out of joy. Luckily no one can hear you up there. Enjoy!!
All the best luck to you. I have already had my solo flights on an ASK-13 and I am now flying an K-8. I can Tell you, switching to your 2nd aircraft is way more exciting then your Solos, because you do Not know what is coming to you. All the best luck on your Journey, Sparki
@@Sparki_von_Sparkenia Thanks, i have also already flown the ASK-13, actually, a modified version of it with a cabrio layout. I am looking forward to flying solo there too.
Nice video! I did log a bunch of time in 2 AS K21s although I started long before that, in the early eighties of last century, flying Blanik L-13, Rhonlerche, Bergfalke and Cobra-15 gliders... Unfortunately flight dynamics wise and soaring weather wise MSFS leaves a LOT to be desired, and that's partially patent in your video... For instance, circling in a thermal seldom results in the expected outcome, and strangely "thermal lift" in MSFS is best profited flying along a straight line, which doesn't make the slightest sense under most RW conditions... Also, the way the "string physics" are programmed in MSFS are quite buggy and then, those gliders I have tried (not this K21 which I do not own) have quite a few glitches, innacuracies, incomplete or wrongly modelled aerodynamic properties :-/ Maybe 2024 brings good news for Soarin (???)
At 10:07 they even included the burn marks on the headrest on the rear seat! When the sun is shining in a specific angle and the rear canopy is opened, it will create a lense effect and burn the headrest ... i always fear that a 21 burns down that way ....
I spent my first years of aviation on the ASK21 as well. Its a great plane to learn the basics and get the feel for flying. One thing I really do miss in this one, is the typical "clunk" sound when pulling the speedbrake out of its lock. Also the sound of pushing it back in, was a double check for me it was firmly into place. I experienced one time, that during the winch launch the speedbrake wasn't locked well enough and was pulled out partially during the steep climb due to the aerodynamic forces. Dangerous situation that taught me an important lesson: No clunk, no thumbs up before the launch.
The beeping was annoying at first but as time went by... it really makes the glider feel like it has a personality. Elated when it really starts climbing, practically depressed when it stops rising up 😂
Thank you for the great video! How did you set the linearity of your joystick in MSFS for the ASK21 to get it as realistic as possible? (I’m using the Thrustmaster TCA Airbus Joystick)
Thank you for sharing this video. I learned to fly on the ASK21 (D-9723) in southern Germany, as well. In fact, yesterday was our annual Fliegerfest at our club and we provided guest flights using two ASK21s. Opening my browser this morning and discovering this video really made my morning. Many thanks!
Because gliding started in Germany post WW1 and since then the gliding world use meters. Germany is the birthplace of gliding and full of small airports dedicated to gliding. Same for Switzerland, Austria and south France. It is a typical european birth sport. All major gliders builders are from Germany, only in recent years gliders are produced also in nearly country like Polen, Slovenja, Czech because of lower manpower costs.
Great video. I find it rather frustrating to get into gliders in msfs and the reason undoubtedly is that I don't have a good understanding on how to operate a glider. I'm sure that with the correct knowledge it would indeed be fun but the only way to obtain that knowledge is by watching videos like these from someone with actual expertise. I watch all you other airline videos and they have thought me heaps so would love to see the same for gliders. Thank you.
I'd love to see a video of you explaining how to properly hit a thermal and maybe showing yourself gaining some serious altitude. I wonder how far one of these can be taken...
depending on the skill of the pilot and the strength of the thermals, you can get maybe 80km/h average cross country speed, but thats already on the high end. But i have not tried it in the sim yet.
The Probe of the Variometer on the back of the plane is actually rotated by 180 degrees. It should be mounted the other way around. You can mount it that way in the real world, the indications on the next flight then will be crap.
That's the first aircraft in the sim ever that I've flown in real life... however in real life about a year and a half ago I decided that having a engine is the better way of flying🙂 So still waiting for a TMG
Apologies for departing from the views expressed but I think this is a very average simulation. The gauges, interior, tow rope connection, speed brakes, tyres and exterior are not particularly well done considering the simplicity of the real ASK21. There are other glider addons that are better and cheaper or free.

We got finally the ASK21 con msfs!
It's the glider i started with in Rieti where i learned to fly gliders!

I enjoyed hearing about your history and seeing how a glider works. I had no idea.
I have over 100 flights in the K21! Can’t wait to check this one out!
This is great for doing some excerices for my solo flight in the next few weeks
can you do a video on your weather settings to be able to do a realistic glider flight? Great videos!
You are a ASK-21 person, I am a Grob Twin II person. We are not the same :D
A live stream flying gilders? absolutely!
Groupflight!
Thanks for the very nice video. Will get one ASAP.
27:03 the F-14 had a rope turn coordinator too 😃

True!
Great video, completely different from airliners but definitely worth watch and like it.

Hi, I think I kept the curves from the Fenix when I flew the ASK21. -20 on pitch and roll.
Great i fly grob 103s in usa. Do they have a version with knots and feet? I love the sim but the gliders aren't great. This looks great!
I know this area. Have you ever visited Borken-Hoxfeld?
In my flight school the cockpit is equipped with the LX9000
Wow very fancy. We just use the same configuration as shown in this video
We have a LX8080

I was just wondering if by any chance you know why in the glider world they use km and meters ?

In the UK and maybe USA I'm not sure, they still use feet for height and knots for climb rate.

That's so cool and nicely narrated throughout the whole video. like all your videos, very well documented, explained and professional.

This was an example where the TIN really shines. That slow it has more than enough time to load in crisply and then it just looks great.
Great video. It is nice to know some of your pilot/flight training. Keep up the great work!
So cool thanks for all videos
EDLD great to see the airport where i started my ppl. Thx Emanuel
Ive never studied glider flying so this was very interesting

Great video, I am a glider pilot and my first ever flight was also in a K21! 😄
Really cool seeing you flying a Glider! I would love a stream of glider flying together with the community
This is awsome! Does one need addon for cable launch, or is this integrated?
Looks like such fun.

I started ask-21 when I was 14 :-)
Awesome..
Klanten vibe!
Glider flying in the Alps? =)
How is it compared to the gotfriends discus?
I fly that airplane myself and I enjoy it. Can you make more videos with the ask21. like in the alps?
max winch speed is 150 in the beginning you where above that but ye thats the game
So, as you say... Pitch for attitude, power for airspeed... Hmm.. Power... Oh, wait... (;
did you use real world weather?

6:20 we all know one guy who flew without them, right?
