  • Hello, I'm Nazan. I teach yoga and facilitate sound healing sessions. I'm also registered as severely sight-impaired. This video includes content that will support facilitators of events and any business owner, or employee get to know more about accessibility and tips on inclusion. There is also a Q&A at the end, featuring two of my students.
In this video I talk about:
-Why people don't believe I'm blind
-Tips on accessible content when teaching or working with people who are blind
-Breaking down the stereotype and elaborating on why representation matters
-Q&A with two blind people after teaching a mixed group (sighted, and not sighted).

This is so cool! Thanks for sharing your lived experience with the world and being an advocate! I'm legally blind with Cone-rod Dystrophy and Nystagmus here in Indiana, USA, but like you, I don't appear as "blind" according to social standards. Representation from people like you who get it, and want to help create a more inclusive, accessible world mean the most!

Ahh it’s also so cool that I’ve reached you through this video - the power of the internet! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, comment and share your experience too. Society likes putting people in boxes and keeping them trapped there… we won’t let that happen! I don’t know about you, but for a long time I did shy away from sharing or advocating, because although I am registered blind, the medical system and society makes me feel as though I’m not ‘blind enough.’ A completely blind friend reminded me recently that actually I have very similar struggles to her and live life in a very similar way despite the difference. We shouldn’t bury our gifts in hope to fit in with the wider world - my message is not only to advocate for people like us but to remind you and people with little or no vision or any condition that we have these super powers that we must learn to harness for an inclusive world ❤️ Delt called to share that with you.. hope that’s okay!! Sending my magic over to you all the way over from the UK!

@ thanks, Nazan! I really appreciate the encouragement and send it right back your way! I definitely relate to what you’re saying. Many people don’t take my condition seriously, which is why I’ve had to become my own best advocate and speak openly about it. I’m a graphic designer, and adjunct instructor here at Indiana University, where I’ve been fortunate to have had opportunities to share my lived experiences through our various DEI committees. Unfortunately DEI work is being dismantled in a large way, due to our new US administration, so we’re challenged more than ever on speaking openly and supporting those who need appropriate accommodations. I think now is the perfect opportunity to remind people what that type of work is for, and that we hold a valuable place in the world with rich perspective. Again, you are awesome and I appreciate you! ❤️

@@chaddisfaction Thank you for sharing again! It is interesting to know what’s happening in other countries and how different groups of people / communities are affected. That must be really hard to feel as through you are restricted and not prioritised / the sector of EDI / DEI! I hope things shift somehow for the better - it is soo important to speak out about these things and build awareness. I underestimate how much these videos could really ripple out for at least some positive change within individuals, even if its not at a large scale.
Well done for the way you're navigating through your experiences - becoming your own best advocate is really a skill that takes courage, commitment and consistency - in a world / society that battles for the opposite! (To bring us down!). I think you'll like my next video I'm working on, which explains the different models of disability with personal reflections!
By working at the university that you work at, and by following your passion, you already teach so many individuals conscientiously about DEI. You represent people like yourself positively, creating a great impact! You prove the staus qou wrong, and inspire many, i'm sure !! Be proud to be you - I know firsthand how difficult it is to get to a point where you are living your life not determined by the prediction of the general consensus! VIP power!
