Korea has long been known as the “White-Clad People,” a term rooted in the tradition of wearing white clothing. This tradition symbolizes aesthetic values such as purity, cleanliness, and humility. It goes beyond the mere choice of color and has profoundly influenced the Korean sense of beauty and self-expression. In Korea, where cleanliness and natural beauty have traditionally been valued, grooming and enhancing one’s appearance is not just about pursuing external beauty. It also serves as a means of fostering harmony with others and expressing individuality. Given the strong collectivist culture in Korean society, maintaining a neat and polished appearance is often regarded as a sign of respect for others. This culture of grooming, connecting the past and present, is not merely a superficial trend but a meaningful cultural expression that reflects Korean aesthetic values and approaches to life.

From the point of view of British tourists who have traveled to both Korea and Japan, what they have in common is that although the two countries look similar, Japan seems to be closed and unable to say something truthful, but Koreans often say that it seems somewhat comfortable and very open to expressions. Also, the Japanese are reluctant because they are not good at English, but Koreans try to communicate in English.
Toilets in South Korea are free. Depending on the condition of the building, they might be inside the store, or you might have to leave the store and go somewhere else in the building. Almost all stores have toilets, please just ask. Sometimes you might need an electronic key number or a physical key. If you're in a hurry, local subway stations or large buildings usually have open toilets. FYI. You can ask for “ toilet” in English and most people will know what it means. In Korean, it's “Hwa-jang-sil”.

I hope you will not take unconfirmed information about Korea for granted and look at it without prejudice.I think it would be more fun to tell you what you've seen for sure
It's a good point that people in Korea really care about how others see them and are quick to judge each other. They are always comparing themselves and others in every aspect, whether it's looks, education, or money, which pushes everyone to keep competing. While this has helped Korea develop quickly, it can be really tough for someone from a different culture to get used to. About cosmetic surgery, it's true that not everyone gets surgery, but people are more open about it here. Even though there can be a lot of harsh comments, I hope your time here was enjoyable.
You walked along the Hongdae Yeontral Park (the park built over the underground railway), but you actually need to head into the alleys on the right side when coming from the subway station toward the park. There, you’ll find a mix of Korea's traditional houses and shops that have been remodeled from those homes. That’s where the real hotspots are, so be sure to check it out. This applies to the entire area, from the entrance of the Gyeongui Line Forest Park to the alleys deeper inside.
Although it has only been six months, I’d like to share my thoughts as a Korean who has lived in a Western country. Currently, Korea has an excessively competitive atmosphere in various areas. From my perspective, Koreans don’t seem to view this as a source of unhappiness but rather as something natural. After all, they’ve lived this way since they were born. I believe this is one of the reasons why foreigners from Western countries often find it difficult to adapt to life in Korea. To be honest, I don’t really like the competitive nature of society in my country, but I think It was an inevitable choice to achieve rapid economic growth as a country that suffered from the Korean war. That being said, Korea also has many advantages, such as public safety, efficient administration, healthcare, and well-developed infrastructure.
also the only people that compares japan to korea and trys to associate Japan with korea are Japanese people and foreigners living in Japan or obsessed with Japan. you'll never see a korean person compare korea to japan. its always the japanese and foreigners that try so hard to someway connect japan to korea for some reason. the most similar country to japan would be taiwan not Korea. korea and japan is like uk and Italy in europe. korea being Italy and japan being the UK.

Nah Taiwan is too chaotic compared to South Korea and Japan. Also ethnically, Tawianese are Chinese but Japanese and Korean are really different from Chinese.
Your competition for Korea and your perception of looks and plastic surgery came from the media, not from what you have experienced. Actually, not many Koreans have had plastic surgery. Because of Korea's high plastic surgery technology, many Asian people come to Korea for plastic surgery... If you go to plastic surgery, dermatology, you can see that almost all of them are from China, Japan... and some Southeast Asian people. And we invest hours to improve our looks?? Most people who are interested in looks may be like that, but most of them are not. Italians dress up well because they are interested in fashion. But I don't understand why Koreans say this weird thing when they dress up well because of the pressure on their appearance when they don't say it's pressure on their appearance.
exactly. online articles written by chinese and westerners are all incorrect info written from anger and jealousy. korean government statistics show almost 95% of plastic surgery performed in korea was on foreigners mainly from China then Japan southeast Asia and then europe and usa. in fact almost 7 million chinese came to korea in one year as medical tourism. also millions of foreign patients sign confidentiality forms so the surgery is hidden from public.
many westerners and asians cannot accept the fact that many koreans are naturally beautiful and not from surgery. they expected koreans to look like farmers from china Japan southeast. and when they find out they dont they suddenly say its plastic surgery. not only plastic surgery but leg surgery to increase height and butt implants and breast implants. also almost all koreans have even paler skins under their clothes. according to westerners koreans must be bathing in bleach. please accept reality and the truth. not what you read online written by angry jealous chinese Japanese and westerners
We value the manners in public to the point where we learn from the regular kindergarten course. These things are well-preserved because we are taught by school or our parents from an early age not to do anything that harms others. But we also fear that more refugees and immigrants will break our public values. Education is very important.
Beware vloggers making sweeping generalisations after less than one day in a place!! 🙄 Seoul has one of the best public toilet systems in the world along with it’s wonderful public transport system.
As a Korean, living in Europe, I can quite understand where your perception or stereotype is coming from. But one thing I would like to mention is that, the area you spent time, it's usually where people hangout when they want to meet friends and go to a nice shops, stores or a bar not like a regular residence area where you can wear casually and more easy-wear. Of course there can be some people feeling pressured about how they should look like or what you should wear but I just wanted to mention here that Hongdae is not really the right place to show what Koreans or all Seoul people look like. About the white skin you mentioned, traditionally, if you are from a high class, then you have slaves and you don't do physical work outdoor, right? Then you naturally have untanned skin and you don't have a lot of freckles and have clear and smooth skin, right? That's the skin that Korean people are looking for. Not just the colour they are mentioning. It has nothing to do with fantasizing Europeans or what so ever. Also, another topic I would like to write down is about Korea and Japan. Korea was under colonization of Japan for 35 years and there was so many massacre and we have horrible history. I am pretty sure not a lot of Koreans would love to hear when you compare Korea and Japan too much. I know we look similar and I know our culture might look the same from an outsider point of view. Still, we are different and Koreans are proud of what we have achieved after the independence! Anyway, I am very glad to see you traveling in Korea and I hope you can have tons of fun and make so much fun experiences! Wow I wrote quite some haha Welcome to Korea! 🎉

Your flow of thoughts is interesting. I appreciate that you’re not just visiting for sightseeing but also taking an interest in the culture, way of life, and mindset of people. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As a Korean, I somewhat agree with your impressions of Korea. No one really likes the competitive nature of our society, but it’s deeply rooted due to historical circumstances, and changing such an entrenched social phenomenon is not easy. I found it fascinating that you were intrigued by how Japanese people tend to hide their emotions. Koreans are generally more expressive with their emotions. Personally, I feel that British people are somewhat similar to Japanese people in how they conceal their feelings. For instance, when I was working in the UK, a customer once told me everything was “lovely” , but later sent a lengthy complaint email to my manager. Honestly, I found this approach better than openly expressing anger, but at the same time, I felt a slight sense of betrayal. 😅 Since then, I only half-believe compliments from British people. What do you think? I’d love to hear your opinion! Btw, I like UK and their sarcastic humor😊

Koreans don’t just prefer plain white skin; they value clear and bright skin. Rather than having pale skin with blemishes or crackles they prefer slightly less fair but clean and flawless skin. Anyway.. happy new year Oli!!
Unfortunately, you visited Korea before summer. I am worried that you may have remembered those few months with prejudice and misunderstanding about Korea. It's not that I want anyone to evaluate and look at me, it's that I like to dress up and be neat and cool and be satisfied with myself. In the 90s, many people thought that tanning and dark skin looked healthy and attractive, so natural or machine tanning was popular. Then and now, people prefer clean skin, not obsessed with white skin like white people. And none of my mother, I, or my daughters have had plastic surgery. Koreans have the image of wanting white skin because they're addicted to plastic surgery. Even though there are many who haven't had plastic surgery. It's interesting that there are many foreign tourists who come to Gangnam for plastic surgery because plastic surgery techniques are good. It's interesting that there are many foreigners who have had plastic surgery. They say that Japan and Korea are close but distant countries. In particular, if we look at the history of invasion, Japan invaded Joseon (Korea in the past) several times. Not too long ago, Korea was under Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945. Because of this, there were many struggles for independence, and after South Korea became independent, Japan became a defeated nation. Not long after independence, the Korean War broke out, and Japan became rich again by selling military supplies. Korea was divided into North and South due to the war. Despite this, the Japanese government has not made a proper apology, and the Japanese people do not properly study the history of that time. Ironically, anti-Korean books sell well in Japan, and there are anti-Korean protests. It is not that they hate the Japanese or are rivals, but rather that they hate those people and want a sincere apology and admission of their mistakes. It would have been nice if you had visited the Seodaemun Prison Museum in Korea. What a shame.
This channel is all about being authentic, showing both the ups and downs of my trips. There are some stressful and difficult challenges to overcome when visiting any foreign country, which is exactly why I do it, to learn and grow from these experiences. No need to feel sympathy for me, I had an amazing time and I will most definitely be returning again someday.

There are many patients from China and Japan who mock Korea as a plastic surgery powerhouse in Korean plastic surgery clinics. It's a cultural difference. In Korea, plastic surgery is not considered a big deal, so people don't hide the fact that they've had it, but in China and Japan, they hide it because they feel ashamed of it.
I have been to Seoul twice and can absolutely vouch for your statement about everyone looking 'beautiful' even though I must say Koreans have an amazing cosmetics industry which obviously will help. In saying that, I'm a big K-POP fan (girl groups mostly eg Dreamcatcher, fromis_9 etc) and those girls' beauty is beyond incredible. Weirdly I also live in Da Nang, I'll keep an eye out for you.
Hey, bro. Once you have a sense of beauty, it does not take long and need energy to ready to go out dressed -up (let's say, purchasing clothes, wearing clothing, cosmetics, etc.). People who are not interested in fashion and skin care, etc. take long in time-and spend more money once you decide to dress up. Korean people and the country itself collectively have been evolving to beauty-concerned people and place. I mean the current environments in Korea provide people inside of Korea easy access (cheap and a lot of choices and guides) to the beauty industry. So it is not like you think. Plus, like Italy and France, it benefits Korean economy as the country sells products and content related to beauty itself to the world. People won't buy clothes and cosmetics and K Pop albums, unless Korean things and people are attractive. Everything is all connected. When you see social phenomena, hope not seeing in fragments.
This person is the kind of person who can only view things in his own way no matter what country he goes to. Anything that is not convenient for you will be rated as NG.
I agree with almost everything minus the beauty expectations thing. It's far off from reality. People care about looking nice in Korea but they're not that obsessed. It's actually a very healthy thing where the standard is to just be clean. Dress nicely (not expensive) and be clean (take a shower, wash your hair, stuff like that). And they have a lot of focus on outside activities. Parks are full. People go jogging. People go around the river with their bicycle. They always do something with their friends or loved ones. They don't sit at home. It's healthy. It makes you wanna go outside and chill. And nobody in Korea really gives a fuck about any standards as long as you look like you take care of yourself. It's not exaggerated. It's blown up by the media. Do things like that happen? Yes. But in parts of society that 99% of us don't reach nor do we care about. So what's the point of being worried about how Lambo drivers live their life and by what standards?
Appreciate you sharing this take. That’s really refreshing to hear! My thoughts developed over my 10 days there, I got the feeling people are extremely friendly and outgoing, always saw people enjoying themselves out in the parks and whatnot.
I noticed that the process of coming to my restaurant was very difficult...😂 Anyway, it was so nice to meet you. I enjoy whaching your video. Happy end of the year, Oli😊 i hope see you some day
As a korean, I do think we care about others a lot, (like how they would think of me) and this manifests through fashion or beauty style. For example, we don't usually go for bright, expressive color for clothes because we don't wanna stick out but wanna blend in. Sometimes it feels weird and funny to me when I find everyone on the street wearing the same black winter jackets😅 And then I realize I'm also wearing black jackets and I'm like "well I'm also korean eventually". Consuming the social standards not knowing it. And yes, this might be stressing and overwhelming to people, but I belive they wouldn't even notice how it actually puts pressure on them and how they are not really free from the standards. just like my own experience. I'm still learning English so hope I made myself clear. By the way I love your video, keep it up!
I really enjoy your videos. You capture the excitement and struggles of arriving in a new country so well. As a Korean, I really appreciate how sharp and thoughtful your questions are. They feel genuine and show how deeply you’ve been thinking about Korea. Here’s my take on one of your points. For foreigners, it’s natural to compare Korea and Japan. Honestly, Korea and Japan often act like they dislike each other, but deep down, there’s a quiet admiration (let’s be real, it’s true-we dislike the Japanese government, but we respect their people and culture). In Korea, comments about appearance are a big part of everyday conversation. Things like, “You look tired,” “You look pretty today,” or even, “Did you gain weight?” are common. I thought that was normal until I moved to the U.S. and realized how much pressure there is around appearances in Korea. Koreans really value self-care and, in some ways, thrive under that pressure. But living abroad, I’ve felt a huge sense of freedom from it. I really support your journey and love how honest you are with your thoughts. That kind of sincerity is so refreshing and inspiring.
I enjoyed watching your video and appreciate you for all your efforts indeed. I however want to correct some of the wrong information here. As far as I know, there is no such cosmetics in the world, not to mention in Korea, that makes your skin "whiter" or "lighter". Koreans have the lightest skin among all Asians by nature. When I was a kid in the 90's and 2000's, every TV entertainers artificially tanned their skins as tanning was a popular trend back then. There are cosmetics called "whitening cream", and that sort of cosmetics exist everywhere in the world, not just in Korea. The idea of whitening cream is to help make freckles and hyper-pigmented patches lighter by gradually exfoliating the old skin. It cannot change the skin color, or "whitens" your skin at all. That's not possible unless you manipulate DNA of melanocytes in your body. As for plastic surgeries, as Korean pop culture has been very popular since the 90's, Asians such as Chinese and Japanese come to Korea for the surgeries dreaming to look like Koreans or Korean entertainers they admire. That makes plastic surgeries in Korea well known to the world. Plastic surgeries are not common medical procedures to ordinary people in Korea unless you regard Botox, removing spots, orthodontics, and pinching eyes as plastic surgeries as well.

I love you, Korea. ❤

In Korea, you should be quiet in public places where there are many people. Public morals are very important in Korea. Don't forget it.

Wow I wrote quite some haha

Since then, I only half-believe compliments from British people.
What do you think? I’d love to hear your opinion!

It is true that Koreans enjoy plastic surgery, but the statistics are inflated due to the large number of foreign patients.

Thanks for your kind words and providing your cross-culture perspective :)
