Also, people had kids very young, so most of their lives would happen at the same time. If your parents were 20 when they had you, you’d grow up hearing stories about 1 or 2 decades before you were born, not much more.

Amazing footage. It seems like Pope Leo was told about the concept of moving pictures and was fascinated by it. That he is acting naturally instead of standing still as in a still photo makes this film way more interesting. Amazing that this man was alive over a century ago and was born at the beginning of the 19th century and today we get a look at him in film.
Nobody was standing very still in the 1890s for photographs. By then, instantanous photography had existed in a practical form for 35 years, and was widespread for the past decade.

@TruthSeeker75 I only recently discovered the long version, maybe about 4 months ago. When we have the time my wife and I pray the long version as opposed to the short one. Calling it the long version is an understatement. I do agree that the long version is a warning about Satan infiltrating the Church. I'm just not certain that Vatican 2 was Satanic in origin.

He also wrote another encyclical on the reading of scripture reinstating the dogma that holy scripture is inerrant, he is also the author of the prayer to Saint Michael that is now of common use everywhere, particularly at the end of the rosary. Overall I just write this here now scratching my head and wondering how is he not canonized as saint or at least beatified?

All a bit moot though, as the Pope's job has always been to say one thing and do the opposite. The Pope will push for open borders but while segregating themselves behind the walls of the Vatican. Even stuff that happened a hundred years ago seem so distant to us, but with footages like this it just tells you that this is the same world, the same species (humans), people that were as alive as we are today. It's these moments you realize the past is much closer to us, that Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, the expertise of the Prussian army, the unification of Italy, the chaos of WW1 and the birth of nations were like yesterday.

Jehova wasn't even the sole god of the Jewish tribes until the Babylonian Era. Although the scribes and sages did a good job at erasing the polytheistic past there are still remnants of that tradition. Even the multiple desciptions and names Jews have for Jehova hint at the fact that several deities were merged into a single one.

So yes, he may be the earliest-born captured on film, but the earliest-born photographed dates far before that, before even empress Marie-Louise, Napoléon’s wife (yes there’s a picture of her). At some point I thought it was Joseph Souberbielle (born 1754), Robespierre’s physician, and a jury to Marie-Antoinette’s trial, but it turned out it wasn’t him on the picture, so finally it may be Conrad Heyer, an american farmer who fought during the american Revolution (who was born earlier anyway : 1749).

In 1962 I met my great grandmother for the one and only time. I was 5 and she was 91. The first thing she said to me was "I've spoken to someone who talked with Napoleon". In other words, this Pope was able to witness some of the greatest composers to have lived, perform, premiere their newest compositions and read about them not as historical figures but as current peers. It’s truly an extraordinary thing to think of.

What's amazing about Leo XIII is that he seemed to completely get the idea of a moving picture and was a natural at it. Most people still tended to keep their movements to a minimum, as if posing for a daguerreotype, whereas in these clips he grasps the quality of spectacle.
That did strike me. He had as much or more appropriate demeanor for video than half the people in 80s and 90s commercials.

This is great. Leo XIII was actually a big fan of new technology and made made big strides in advocating for the coexistance of science and religion. He even constructed the Vatican Observatory which still operates to this day.

Assuming Pope Leo XIII learnt to speak at age 5 in 1815 the person from 17th century would have to be 116 years old - the same age as the oldest person alive today. Meaning this would be extremely unlikely although life expectancy was not massively different around 1800.

The original video quality sucks. What you see here is various AI algorithms which colour, upscale and smooth the video. It's truly amazing what AI can do. They do this much much better than a human, and in fraction of the time. They literally make the video higher quality, like it's magic.

Paradoxically, I think the opposite would happen. We happen to think of video as a "modern" technology, but in 500-1000 years it would be seen as painting or sculpture are today. You wouldn't think it is particularly mind-boggling to see a painting of someone born in 1405 (like Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos), nor the bust of someone born in 69 BC (Cleopatra VII Philopator). Someone in 2600 wouldn't think a video from 1900 would be particularly more incredible than one from 2000 or one from 2100. We are in a unique position regarding this medium, I think.
@@tiagorodrigues3730 I dunno, unlike paintings we can see the person move and "in the flesh" and we can see how they really looked like instead of having to rely on artists interpretations and just static images on a canvas so I'm not really sure about that. A painting of one person is one thing but when you add movement, sound and other people and things in the background it kinda adds to the amazement. These kind of videos are more than just ink on a canvas. It's the closest thing we have to time travel and looking at stuff like this is like peering into a portal where you can almost feel everything around you as if you were there. I see what you mean though.

It always makes me sad because I feel like every generation carries a certain wisdom with them. I’m only 23 but I was fortunate to know my great-grandmother and all 4 of my great grandparents. My great-grandmother was born in 1913 and she passed away a few months before her 100th birthday. I was 16 years old at the time of her passing. What makes me sad is it’s only now I realize I should have asked her more questions. There was no language barrier but I was so young. I still though have vivid memories of going to my great-grandmother’s house and exploring all these technological trinkets I didn’t know 😂. I grew up in the States so it was hard not seeing my relatives a lot who lived 5,000 miles away in another country. It’s amazing footage like this exist. Imagine all these stories!

I was 15 when my my beautiful paternal German grandmother died and wished I had spoken more German with her and asked more questions. But our young minds are not in that space.

It's hard to put into words exactly what this type of experience feels like. Watching people so ancient to us now, appear so human and normal. They sway, and smile and laugh, and get uncomfortable in tight-fitting clothes. Seeing historical figures through photos removes so much humanness from them, and I think it's important to show people footage like this because it removes the barrier of history, and makes it so we're less likely to repeat atrocity when we see ourselves in the past.
