Really interesting conversation, thanks Lee and Joe. I completely agree regards listening skills potentially being lost in the modern digital age. I would add ‘focus’ or ‘persistence’ to the list. With the wealth of info available in the digital age it’s too easy for learners to become distracted by the next thing being shown to them before they’ve really mastered the previous one. When I was doing most of my harmonica learning it was prior to the internet and it would often be many months or even years before I discovered a new technique or subtlety. I would therefore spend all that time in between focused on each discovery. I had no choice because there was no one to tell me where to go next. I’m not saying I’m a great player but I’ve met many players who aren’t able to play all the bends with any degree of accuracy but yet declare themselves to be working on overblows (for example)..
Hi, thanks for posting and I hope you are doing well. Your suggestion of persistence is a brilliant build! Love it. You need that the become good anything, including the harmonica. I share your observation about players seemingly getting their learning priorities mixed up. I’ve never understood why someone would be trying to learn to overblow if the can’t bend very well. But I am concluding for some people learning to play the harmonica is less about making music but more about the gear and the techniques. That’s fine, but if your focus is learning to make music you need to build your foundations. As Joe says, you can’t build a tall building without strong foundation. Lee
