One of the first big band vinyl I purchased years ago. I put it on cassette and listened to this for months in my Mustang ll going to music school.

What a treat to hear this again. I bought all their albums years ago. I have moved so many times that I can no longer find them. Great music.

Let me be the first to comment on one of Toshiko's finest compositions and one of her greatest arrangements. It works in a quartet AND a big band.

I agree with you 100 % . Met the lady at a one-off Free concert arranged by the Japanese Embassy in Johannesburg South Africa.

I already owned this album in high school. I was delighted that we had a chance to play this chart in college big band. The one thing I remember is the precision we had to pay attention to in those little slight delays in the trumpet section. Just like the saxes, there are some parts where if you straight out swing it, you end up wrong. The pickup notes almost have to "threaten" to be delayed but not quite. (Believe me, we worked on that.) Great chart that stands up to this day many many years later.

    40年以上前、寒い冬の夜の新潟県民会館。雪で到着が遅れていた彼女たちの演奏が漸く始まりました。いまだに忘れられない一夜でした。

First Vinyl album of Ms Akiyoshi that I bought. Met her at a concert in Johannesburg sponsored by the Japanese Embassy. Humble and down-to-earth and brilliant ~

One of the greatest creators of music ever born. Love you Toshiko! Lew is a joy to hear play tenor as well as flute!

One of the first jazz albums I bought. I first heard this album on WBGO / Newark NJ station on the "Art Vincent" show. Anyone remember that guy? He played the entire album without interruption because it was a non-commercial station. In the 70s, the major record labels were still making real jazz records. Columbia put out some great albums too back then like Woody Shaw and Dexter Gordon.

Jazz truly is dying if this only has 10 000+ views

Lew has that quintessential cool sax sound for this tune.

I had read that she was very influenced by Bud Powell. His composition “Glass Enclosure” might have been an influence for the intro to “Long Yellow Road.” Curious if anyone else hears the similarity there.
