Great question! Ephesians 2:20 says the Apostles are the foundation. There are no Apostles outside the 12. But Apostle can also refer to a missionary because Apostle defined means “ one sent out” or “messenger”. Someone going to plant a church in another country or where Christ isn’t proclaimed can be called a missionary or apostle, but they are NOT part the 12 Original Apostles Jesus selected after a night of praying (Luke 6:12-16).Hence the accurate term that should be used is missionaries.You can’t be part of the Original 12 but you can be a missionary. Also, many of the young boys of the original Apostles didn’t even call themselves apostles even though they were their disciples.
