this movie was golden and all the critics saying it was inappropriate are just sexist bigots that think everything about a woman's body should be kept tightly locked and strictly preserved which is a DANGEROUS mindset. If people were more open about menstruation there'd be far less preteen girls who think they're dying because they started bleeding everywhere and getting horny. I honestly think this movie was extremely tastefully done considering its subject matter - the scene where she's frantically drawing "dirty" things under the bed just KILLED me because its 100% what I did as a preteen lol

We are so used to see 16 to 18 y.o. in series being super sexual, but we forget that it's not a smooth transition. Women dont wake up one day, and know how to flirt.

Disney and Pixar movies in that past have shown things just as or far more mature--war, drinking, smoking, romance, abuse, death, sexual innuendos....but heaven forbid a movie talk about puberty, something every child is going to face very soon.

I honestly think it’s just the type of audience watching this movie. It’s for tweens and teens. It’s refreshing to see a movie for older kids. I don’t even think young kids would properly understand the plot of the movie. There’s a huge difference between what kids watch and what teens watch. So the fact that this movie is a middle ground that doesn’t push the jokes but also acknowledges them is great. We need more movies like this

This movie really resonated with me. I was a weird kid with goofy friends that obsessed over things like tv shows and bands. I also butt heads with my mom a LOT because she was a helicopter parent due to certain issues I had. I saw a lot of myself in her, and I understood why she was acting the way she did. I liked the message in the end, that you don’t have to be ashamed of being human, which is ironically represented by a red panda lmao. It’s traditional to lock your emotions away and not address them, be prim and proper, do what’s expected rather than what you want. But these days we are finally addressing that people are individuals and should be free to be themselves, even if some people don’t care for it. Coming of age stories have been a thing for so long. It’s just a story where a kid finds out who they are, and yeah puberty can be a big factor in that. It’s a natural process we are all familiar with…so I don’t really see the problem with this one.

Something I also noticed that I relate to, Priya likes 4Town but isn’t as obsessed with the boys as Mei, Mir, or Abby. Maybe it’s just her character design but I know for me personally, it was because I wasn’t that into boys, I liked boy bands but they were always meh to me. People say the movie is cringy but I think they don’t want to acknowledge that they were cringy at that age. Parents tend to downplay their own experiences and don’t like their kids to know they were cringy or acted the same way.

Honestly, it’s nice to see a PG rated film that actually requires SOME parental guidance. Back in my days, PG actually meant something. Films Return to Oz, various Dom Bluth films, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. and what have you, these are films that contain some adult content or aggressive scary imagery that might require adult supervision. Nowadays, whenever a PG gets slapped onto a film it’s not because of the cogent but because studios are afraid that if a film is G rated, it won’t sell as well. For comparison, Lion King in 1994 features a dead body on screen (mind you a very clean looking corpse but still), still has a G. Inside Out in 2015 features ONE scene showing a baby’s bum, gets a PG. A little silly isn’t it? So thank you Pixar and Domee Shi for actually justifying the PG rating.

And by doing what they do best, this movie achieved a lot of firsts. I know Disney/Pixar movies are meant to take us to a fantasyland, but it's also okay to talk about real-world things if it's done right. This is done right. I'm an 80s baby and this movie was pretty accurate. Girls should know about periods before the day comes so they can be prepared and not think they're dying. I also love the accuracy of Meis mother thinking she can do no wrong until Mei confesses she is not the perfect child her mother thinks she is.
My 16 year old cousin just went through something similar this week. He was caught vaping. His parents and grandmother were furious. Not just at him but the adult who gave it to him (another cousin of ours who is an adult). He confessed where he got the vape pens from and that he started doing it because of stress. He's been stressed because he's been moved out of state and can't find any friends (kids his age where he lives now are either preachy church kids or druggies). He feels alone and misses the people left behind. (I miss my little buddy too 🥺). He found an unhealthy outlet because he felt he couldn't talk to his mom. He talked with his grandmother over the phone about all this. And when she got off the phone I told her that I get the frustration on both sides. He's stressed and you're disappointed because you expected him to be perfect (Like Meis mother thought of her). There is no amount of preparation to keep kids from making these mistakes. They aren't perfect and they aren't better than you and I when we were that age. They're going to mess up and that's the point of mistakes. To learn from them. He's going to learn that he has a support system. The only disappointment I have of him is that he, for some reason, thought he couldn't even talk to me. We talk often and send each other videos. But not once did he tell me he was stressed. I wish he had. I love my little cousin. I've known him all his life. He is permanently like 3-9 in my mind. I'm not ready for him to grow up but he has to. And he has to know that I am someone he can trust. If he came back to our state and did something like get drunk on his 21st birthday and needed a ride home. He needs to know that he can call me and I'd pick him up and shove his head in a mini trash can on the way home if he needs it. He needs to know that if his girlfriend broke up with him he can vent to me as well as his parents and grandparents. He's intelligent and a generally good kid, but like Mei, he's just growing up like the rest of us adults have had to do.

I recognize that these characters are like actual young teens, but it also makes me realize how drastically different my young teen and preteen years were from that of my peers. Sometimes I forget people actually have crushes and it's not just some big prank. At 13, my best friend had just moved away, and I was just depressed and paced back and forth in my room talking to myself as though I was all these different characters and crying. That and being ticked about the ways my body was changing and wishing I wasn't a human. It was a very sad year of my life.

I love how this movie kind of shows what a coming of age movie should show. Most movies like this don’t actually show what a girl might have to go through as a teen because it’s “inappropriate”. Turning red is relatable and it shows how girls change physically and emotionally, it shows that it’s ok for girls to have crushes and feel good. Also the conversation that mei’s mom had with her about her body changing was great, proving that normal thing that happen to women aren’t and should be gross. Pixar made a relatable, funny, mature movie without pushing the matureness to far and making it a great movie for all audiences. We need more movies like this :)

Lol "great for all audiences".. there's inherently sexual dancing and mentioning things like "sexy", making kids curious to know more about those things. Kids imitate the sexual things they see not knowing the full consequences of doing that and entertaining that sexual spirit. If they see kids their age in the movies they're allowed to watch doing those things, it's a green light to try it too because they think "hey this seems harmless, I'm mature enough to do that. My parents are just being controlling if they tell me no (this rebellious spirit is taught in this movie), so I'll do that anyway and especially without them there to know. My panda my choice, just like this movie taught me.".

@@user-ly3li3ex8c you kinda get a point, but kids aren’t that dumb. A child won’t copy literally *E V E R Y T H I N G* they see on a television lmao. Yes most of them are naive, but they are not foolish. If a kid gets off their bed at 09:59 PM to go spy on their parents watching a movie, and arrives at a scene where a random guy pulls out a nine-millimetre and starts shooting, the kid won’t rush to bed go to sleep and wake up in the morning and tell their parents “Omg mommy and daddy I want a Nine-millimetre to shoot people!”
For example, both me and my brother have what I call the “little sheep” mentality, which I use to define when someone has the tendency to copy what they see other people doing. For example if I see a person wearing coloured braids (I’m black so I often wear braids) I’d often say “Omg mom can I wear coloured braids too?” But if I see random delinquents vandalizing a store I won’t scream “Omg mom I wanna vandalize a store too!” And same thing with my brother, he’s eight so he’s still a child, and knowing him, he won’t want to murder someone if he sees a guy stabbing another guy on TV. But that also depends if the kid was educated about the said subject. For example if a tween sees a kid his age smoking or vaping and his parents never talked to him about how smoking or vaping can give lung cancer, this tween might likely want to smoke or vape too. But if he was adequately educated and prepared about the said subject, there are gigantic chances that he would know what to respond if the tween he saw gave him the cigarette or vape to try the next day.
Briefly, with adequate education, a kid won’t necessarily reproduce every single little thing they see on TV, because children are just some curious little naive critters that like to explore, but not absolutely and ridiculously dumb or foolish creatures.

Teenagers shouldn’t be forced to grow up so face because then it just causes them to look back on their teenage years and think “why did I waste my childhood like that”. So say what you want about this movie but in my opinion this is one of the most wholesome things us teenagers have in the media, so who cares if it’s too mature for your little 3 year old who you don’t want to care for and just let a tablet take care of? This is what teenagers need right now with everything that’s going on right now so just let it be.

She didn't really guide me through blood-shedding either, my aunt & sister did (even my dad was more helpful).
This film actually aided my being comfortable with these feelings, and seeing Mei reconcile with her mother was kinda cathartic for me. disney/pixar BEEN showing non pg things in their movies. lion king showing dead bodies and the implication of murder/ cainine cannibalism. in the incredibles they showed someone getting sucked into a plane engine. i'm sure there's more i'm missing. they just weren't as subtle with this movie

I had an argument with a college student/professor because he said the movie was about periods, without watching the movie just from reading the title. So because in his head the movie was about that he wasn't going to watch it. Pissed me off so much.
