Honestly, I think its too early to praising Siraj too much. Yes, he was excellent in Aus, and has done well in Eng and in India, but he was very poor at times in SA and he was dreadful in the last test in Eng played this summer. Bairstow and Root were treating him like a club bowler. I think he's a work in progress but I hope us fans don't start clubbing him among the best test fast bowlers around. He still has a long way to go to get that consistency.

I think he has a lot to learn when it comes to test cricket. Really needs to learn bowling dry. The past three test matches where India failed to defend scores, he had almost zero impact in the second innings and was really expensive. I feel really sad for Ishant. Anderson is playing test cricket at 40 while Ishant's career has almost finished because of just 4-5 bad games. I don't think we ever gave Ishant the credit he deserves.
Of course Siraj has plenty to learn. The first thing is patience. In both Eng (2021 & 2022) & SA (2021-22) he wanted to take a wicket every ball, bowled only scrambled seam, completely forgot his outswinger and often missed his line. The patience he showed in Aus (probing, bowling dry, using his intelligence, occasionally using scrambled seam while persisting with outswing) has completely gone missing. Ishant was a much improved bowler post his Sussex stint in 2017 and had his best ever series in SENA in Eng in 2018 but even though he had a very good series in Aus 2018-19 he was bowling 130-135k in his 2nd and 3rd spells and that was first sign of his tiring body. Then he started getting injured (first in NZ) and in his next few series and then (by 2021) he was getting injured by the time of his 2nd or 3rd spell; he was limping by the time of his 2nd and 3rd spells in his last 3-4 tests. He being dropped permanently had less to do with his skill but more to do with his body which was no longer fit enough to bowl quick with bowling rhythm because even in his last 3-4 tests he did bowl wicket taking deliveries.
The problem with our 'experts' like Bhogle is that all they ever engage is in patronizing Indian Team BS. Never in constructive criticism (that will help Indian Team grow and improve). Our test pace attack is no longer world class in SENA conditions. Shami never got his length right in SENA (shades of Ishant pre 2018, Morkel pre 2016) and averages 40 in Eng, 36 in NZ, 32 in Aus. Siraj is a shadow of the bowler he was in Aus with his lack of patience. Thakur has lost pace and bowling 130k without accuracy he is not even international standard : needs to be dropped from tests urgently. Our best ever test bowling lineup was in 2018 when Bhuvi was there and Ishant was in his prime and Bumrah was rapidly becoming one of the premier fast bowlers in world cricket. Except Bumrah who is great (and has a troublesome back) we have nobody else to rely on in SENA today. Umesh's skiddy pace (and questionable accuracy) never worked for a long time in SENA and then he did reasonably well in limited appearences in Aus & Eng in 2020-21 but he was horrendous in SA in 2022. He is 35 too. Fine for Asia but nowhere else. Very urgently need Mohsin Khan (if fit) as 3rd seamer in our test team to aid Bumrah & Shami. Siraj (everywhere) & Prasidh (only in SA & Aus because of extra bounce) can assist him. Both Arshdeep & Khaleel can assist them in Eng & NZ in tests too (if fit enough).
@@sdroy84agt yup. I think it's really easy to miss what Ishant brought to this test attack because he never really ran through batting lineups like Bumrah and Shami. However, the third bowler and fourth bowlers are more important than they get credit for. Ishant in his prime always kept the pressure on and knew his limits. He had a limited skillset but very good discipline and good execution.
@@bepawppy5521 Oh yes, absolutely. Ishant bowled dry which is very important in order to keep the pressure going as an attack. In 2018, Ishant was also a regular wicket taker too as he finally learnt how to pitch the ball up without making it a floaty delivery (in 2017, he had regained his seam position and thus his wrist was again behind the ball). He even added a very good leg cutter around 2018-2019. But alas, his fitness started interfering just as he showed signs of becoming a world class bowler.

I think he has been a victim of the management's policy of preferring young blood over the old. Just like Ishant, Saha and Dhawan were also dropped simply because of their age.
