In this lesson we explain the difference between distance and displacement in physics. We start by explaining what the distance formula is and how it differs from the displacement formula.
The number line is used to show the difference between these two concepts in physics, and examples are worked so that the student can get practice.

I recently got a pre-apprenticeship in the electrical trade and was told I needed a physics credit to become an apprentice, and signed up for a course. When I tell you I was stressing out so much until this video!!! THANK YOU, such clear instructions unlike my course D:

Makes me think like I'm map reading. Plotting and azimuth on a compass.
    Really good stuff.

Hello, I have a question why did we subtract 5-1 in distance for the first example as in it, we should add them to get the total distance

Also if you moved 2 metres to the left and then 3 metres to the right, your total distance moved would be 5 metres, but your displacement would only be 1 metre to the right.

"A lot of people go through the first couple chapters of physics not really know what displacement is". Nahh I was doing delta is equal to millions last night. I caught on real quick. Took some practice but I was up until 1 am. I cannot believe I can do physics with my eyes closed. I cannot believe this is physics. I love it so far.

Can you tell me how distance is path dependent whereas displacement is path independent ??

    • @surendrapandey680

      Pleas reply sir...

    • @jabrown
      @jabrown 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@surendrapandey680 If you moved 2 metres to the left and then 3 metres to the right, your total distance moved would be 5 metres, but your displacement would only be 1 metre to the right. That is what they mean by "path-independent". You'd end up in the same place relative to where you started, independent of the path you took to get there.

hey man i just wanna make sure that i get it, can u check my answers on my assessment?
    DISPLACEMENT
    1. 5 meters(south) to 4 meters (north)=-1meters (south)
    2. -1meter to 6 meters= 7 meters
    3. 1meter to -7 meters = -8meters
    4. 7meters to -7meters = -14 meters
    5. 3meters (north) to 9 meters(south) = 6 meters (north)
    DISTANCE
    1. 6meters to 7 meters = 1 meter
    2. 2 meters to 8 meters = 6 meters
    3. 3meters to 9 meters = 6 meters
    4. 8 meters to 10 meters = 2 meters
    5. 7 meters to -8meters = 15 meters
    can u please check this?

I appreciate your videos. Your way of teaching is spot on for me, please continue. I plan to learn all these courses. I will say though I am getting quite confused on the order of your videos. Either You Tube is not showing all your videos or they are labeled in a different way then I am used to.

Distance means is going anywhere with no direction
Like: The car is travelling 2km per hour
Displacement is going anywhere but with direction
Like: Car is travelling 2km per hour to south
    Hope I get it right
