Thanks for the longer format video. I think this type of content is perfect for the channel. Commentary on these sorts of societal issues is very engaging and easy for me to pay attention to. Input tremendo!

Having grown up in Australia, I am used to seeing world maps centered on Australia (or asia, anyway) my entire life. Maps that aren't centered that way just... look... wrong somehow.
Great video Andrés. Very interesting topic. I studied celestial navigation in university, so this topic of maps is very familiar to me. I learned a lot of Spanish from this video! (Andrea la Mexicana is still my favorite! I know, another 30 push ups for me!) - Dave
@@stevedperkinsbecause Europeans are in closer proximity to other countries and cultures and therefore realize they are not the center of the world. Many Americans believe their language, culture, and customs ARE the center of the world.
And those people should realise that modern civilisations started in Europe, democracy came with it, and much more, probably the most important continent in human history, so if some things seem to be focused around Europe, that's why.
@@Mikebigmike94 Actually, it started in the middle east. There were also some advanced civilizations in the pre-Columbus new world. Bien hecho, Andres!
I really enjoyed this video. I’m from the US and we use the same Europe centric map as the one you had and cut up. I never knew there were upside down maps or Japan centric maps to be honest. Out of curiosity, I looked up if there was a US centric map and apparently there is. I have never seen it used here though. Personally I would never use the US centric map regularly because cutting Asia in half instead of the Pacific Ocean doesn’t make much sense to me, but I definitely see the flaws and issues with each map. I personally don’t feel like the Mercator map (or any other shown) is racist though. I think the makers did the best they could to turn a sphere into a flat map given the purpose of that map at the time and the likely perspective of the people it was intended for at the time of its creation.
Me gusta mucho tu contenido.
It's pretty cool to see you talk about mathematical projections. I'm still too dumb to understand the Spanish, but I'm getting their one day at a time.
Actual dimensions of countries not considered. E.g., Africa is much bigger than represented in mainstream maps. Also, didn’t mention Peters Projection, which shows uk s l most a speck, compared to Africa.
lol I’ve seen people make this claim obviously didn’t pay attention in geography class. Mercador I was taught was bad for size and shape but good for navigation…
Curioso no?
Europeans made the map and put northern Africa in the center, not Europe. It just seems to make sense. We all came from Africa and putting Africa in the center minimizes the Pacifico ocean by dividing it in half. Even with the admitted distortions, it just seems to be the most logical approach geographically.
You pronounce it word by word with emphasis. While the content is at the intermedio level, the speed is at the beginner level. I sped it up to 1.5 but it still doesn't sound natural.

He doesn’t say they’re racist but says why some people might think they’re racist.
A nuanced overview of why people might think maps are racist is very European. Actually thinking that maps are racist is very American, lol.
