    Good. I want to congratulate you on your channel. I am a radio amateur here in Portugal and, much to my regret, I would like to have Rfinder equipment with DMR and analogue, but here in Portugal, having it shipped is very expensive. That's why I'm watching your videos because I'm a lover of Amateur Radio and I've had a license since 2015. Continuation of good videos and 73 since Portugal Lisbon. CT5JCA Bruno Oliveira

    Really odd that it is 4 major Android versions behind and last update was 2020. That's horrible from a security perspective. Very cool that it stores setup in the cloud. The coverage is also great.

    • @bobofthedeep
      @bobofthedeep ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not relevant...the Android OS is just to provide a platform. We have devices going back to 5.1.1 that still work...nothing odd about it!

    • @ScottBlomquist
      @ScottBlomquist ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe more low key alarming than odd. I wouldn't worry much about the Android version if the OS was still supported from a security perspective. Over time, Android updates critical bugs in absolutely everything, including the Bluetooth stack. It's probably mostly fine, but don't take it with you to Defcon or BlackHat or any other security conferences, or it will no longer be your own radio when you come home.

      @@ScottBlomquist true point, great comment, how would one go by making this phone impenetrable?

      It IS relevant. At some point this will not be allowed to access the app store and security is a thing.

    Cloud Memory:
    I need some input so I can make a decision on which digital format to get. Also, I was wondering if a hotspot was necessary for DMR? Every video I've watched gives the impression DMR needs a hotspot to work. What I'm looking for is something small, portable, but can reach out far if I need to. Climbing to a summit to get a signal out isn't a problem for me, so I've kind of been leaning toward the QRP units. I don't have a lot of room because I got too many kids and I tend to move... a lot... Currently in the Fort Hood/Cavazos area and new to HAM (Picked up my GMRS license 2 months ago and my Amateur license last week). I bought a bunch of tidradios (H3s & H8s) for the family to use on GMRS when we go camping, But I'm looking for a good portable base station and a HT.
    The options I've been kicking around are the Icom 705 to cover HF/VHF/UHF and the ID50a or the RFinder B1 Plus for a HT. The other thought was to get the Xiegu x6100 for HF, the Radioddity DB25-D mini for VHF/UHF & DMR... and I'll probably still get the Icom ID50a (or the Rfinder B1 Plus) for the HT. And to complicate the shit out everything else, I was looking at a Unication G4 so I can eavesdrop on the local LEOs and Feds. You got any advice that could help me make my decision. I have to be somewhat financially responsible too or the wifey is likely to abandon me on a deserted island with all newly acquired radio gear (hence the HF requirement LOL).

    I am very happy with my B1+ and have found the USB-C charging to be quite fast (but I guess it depends upon the USB-C charger wattage). I love the portability, to areas where I rarely go, and working new repeaters, but I also like the simplicity of having a built-in hotspot for those occasions when a repeater isn’t nearby. A versatile and innovative product.

    Cloud Memory is a very nice option for any device. Ahh, a member of my club has a original B1, and hes not a tech guy, so its kinda maddening because he's had a hell of a time just keeping it updated. I'm really thinking about getting one of these, just for so I can program on the go from the device itself for local repeaters.

      While I DO agree that it is reasonable considering some of the flagship phone prices...but those flagships actually have better specs and up to date Android versions too. The only thing they are missing is the radio and the ruggedness.
      Android 9 is about to be 5 versions behind the current once Android 14 is out.

    Maybe I got a lemon but mine did not work well for me. I really liked the idea of being able to travel and quickly look up local repeaters and instantly load them into the radio. That part worked pretty much flawlessly. What I had problems with was the radio portion itself. I found that when talking on my local repeater, it would often not break the squelch. I could see it was rec'g a signal as the the led would light green but about half the time, no audio unless I turned the squelch off. There were not any squelch settings; either on or off. For that reason alone I took it back to HRO. The phone was terrible. It was supposed to be at least 4G capable. It would never receive 4G, only 3G. I spent the better part of 45 minutes on the phone with an ATT rep that tried to get it to recognize 4G but we never could. Unless something has changed in the radio, I will stick with my conventional HT's and Repeater Book.

    • @HamRadio2

      IC-7300 is HF, which this device won't do. If you are a Technician, this will be more usable for you. But if you are General or Extra and want to talk on HF, the IC-7300 is best.

    Q: will Bob @ RFinder be releasing an update to bring the devices to a more recent version of Android, say 11 or the current 12 version?
    Also, are these devices 5G or the older 4G that will be shutdown by the carriers in just a few years as all the cellular networks transition to 5G as the primary network interface

    • @bobofthedeep
      @bobofthedeep 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4g is 10-15 years, which is not "just a few years". 5g is not relevant from a performance perspective. DMRoIP is the same whether on 3g, 4g or 5g. The latest security patches are coming in an upcoming ROM release. We cannot upgrade to a later Android until the chipset manufacturer provides the kernel sources. It's not really an issue anyway its more of a perception thing. We have radios on Android 5.5 and 6.0.1 that still work perfectly as radios and we continue to enhance their capability if the hardware can handle it .

    • @dazzles1975
      @dazzles1975 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobofthedeep my concern would be that certain apps need android os 11.0+ to work. Hopefully the chipset maker sends you the kernal to be able to update to a newer os variant.

    • @JohnnyWishbone85
      @JohnnyWishbone85 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobofthedeep -- It's a huge issue, both from a security perspective and your business. I'm *aching* to buy it, but I just *cannot* justify the cost unless it's viable as a smartphone, and I know I'm not alone. Your business would probably double overnight if we knew it had a reasonably current security patch.

    I am very interested in the RFinder B1+ from watching this video. The interesting part to me is the ability of the device to work as a cellular phone and radio. My wife and I will be transforming into full time RVer's this year and communications capability is very key to us. How well does the RFinder work as a cellular phone. I currently have a Samsung running Android 12 on AT&T cellular. I am thinking about moving to this for cellular as well as FM/DMR. Since it has two SIM slot, I can run two different carriers to insure that I have cellular connection. How well does this work with cellular? Have you have any problems with apps not running due to Android 9? What is your overall experience with the device as a phone?
    Thanks, 73 K5BRS

    Cloud Memory - Where is RFinder getting their repeater information? Mainly the DMR repeaters and TG/TS. I am a DMR repeater owner and I see some users not getting the correct TG/TS configuration for their RFinder radios. I do have BM setup with the correct information for what the repeater uses, but I didn't know where RFinder is pulling their data from. Thank you, KD0TGF

    CLOUD MEMORY Great video Jason, as usual. I watch you from a few different accounts depending on the device i'm currently using, and watched this on another device. However, for ease of typing, I switched over to this laptop account. I've always been interested in the rfinders, but I dont think im ready for the leap yet. I still don't know all theins and outs of oip and dmr stuff yet. However, I do have a question for you. I have been on a quest for about a year right now to find the perfect radio for me right now, with no avail. I currently have about 4 yaesu ht's, about 4 yaesu mobiles, and a kenwood mobile, and had an old icom ht. My favorite radio, and my first radio, is a yaesu ft-270r. It is so easy for me to carry into the woods while hunting, it has been my main ht while storm chasing for over 10 years, and never have to worry about it, and it has taken a beating over the years. However, I can BARELY reach the repeater from the woods on a good day. I have recently discovered a 440 repeater within 3 miles of my hunting, so i purchased an ft 60 dual band, and it serves me well. My favorite feature is the squelch knob instead of adjusting squelch in the menu. However, it is NO WAY near the ruggedness or waterproof capabilities of my ft-270. My question is: Is there a dual band ht, new or used, that is rugged like the ft-270, that has a squelch knob? I really like to stick with the top 3 brands, yaesu, kenwood,, and icom, but if there is a lower quality radio that fits my needs, I'll take those suggestions as well. Any and all feedback will be greatly apprecieated. Thank you in advance. 73's KD9SML CLOUD MEMORY
