      Thanks so much for your kind words. We do our best to tackle the real world realities of reenacting and helping reenactors of all skill levels. It's good to know the history, issue, and contractors of ground clothes, for example, but it doesn't teach you how to stay warm at night. Your support means a lot, thanks so much.

    When we do Indian war events we drop all the extra items for our campaigns, we spent a week out in the field, it was fun but wore everyone out .

    I forgot to take a handful of toilet paper squares at Blakeley, but I'm glad I did. Had to scrounge around for paper. Found some disguarded arsenal pack paper. Was funny. And probably more authentic.

    I love the idea of copies of the local newspaper! I'm working on getting a few copies of the Anoka Republican and the Anoka Star for my own impression, but I'm not sure how to go about getting them printed off. Any tips for what to look for or how to get them made?

    Honestly very smart to carry that first aid. Personally I've never done reenactment before because I live in Southern California so it's not as big as compared to the North East. However after observing your channel for a while I'd definitley try to this hobby if I could one day.

    Hey brotha, when it comes to TP...um....whether I get "demerits" or not, my TP is a NON-negotiable, and I DON'T skimp on it either!! If I've gotta bring 3 or 4 full friggin' rolls, I'll DO IT!!
    Had a few "unfortunate" hunting experiences WITHOUT TP, and I'll tell ya, I won't be caught without it again!
    Even if I have to use newspaper to finish the...um..."paperwork", you better believe I'll do it. So keep yours outta sight, or it just might come up......missing.

    That was a good video. Now don't hate me for this, I like to hike and nature calls no matter where you are. The biodegradable baby wipes are the only thing I carry anymore. They are also good to help clean up blisters, cuts, minor burns and more besides the obvious use. I'm sure there is a period correct tin or whatever to keep them in and you will never camp without them once you try them. Sorry but a creature comfort I found and won't give up. ;)

      Taking care of necessities is always high on my priority list. Wipes are a great suggestion and still easily tucked away in a knapsack or a poke sack. Hopefully no one does authenticity checks at the sinks anyway. Lol.

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it matters in any noticeable way. As long as it's sealed and doesn't spend it's entire life in direct sunlight, it should be fine. If you cook with it, it could be good practice to change it after each event or so depending on how often you reenact.

    One thing I had problems with as a young teenager in reenacting (pre-inter webs) and even now that I’m looking to return to the hobby 25 years later is cooking. Would you guys be willing to do a video on preparing the basic three day rations? I’m reading the book by C. A. Stevens and he said how salt pork was boiled but what all other ways was hardtack prepared and eaten? Thank you for all the work you guys have done

    • @ScottAvellino1
      @ScottAvellino1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should check out the civil war Digital digest. One thing I’m going to try is if I’m using a dry cured bacon ration I will crush up hardtack into bits and maybe add a little water or coffee and then fry that in the bacon grease after I’m done cooking the bacon. I’ve heard that was done along with cornmeal. You can make a stew with your hardtack and foraged items as well if you’d like.

    I can find the gear basic but I can not find the mess kit or knapsack what sutler sell the knapsack and mess kit so I can get a price on them will dark green pants work looking for a dark green sack coat and not able to find one but the dark blue

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The messkits are made by Dixie tinworks. Currently there is no "shop" to speak of that makes the berdan knapsacks to our knowledge. However we do have the plans and produce them from time to time in runs. Feel free to shoot an email to captain Whitehall, email address can be found at www.2ndusss.com.
      As for the sackcoat, there is no evidence of there being green sackcoats issued or privately purchased by any sharpshooter in either regiment.

    I know this maybe off topic for the video but could musician's carry the m1840 nco sword. I can see them wearing them in pictures. But could i as a reenactor wear one. I am really tall for the musician's sword and the nco sword would be just the right length. THANKS

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres was two swords made at the time. The M1840 NCO sword Nd the M1840 Musicians sword. Only reference of the two crossing would be a NCO carrying a the shorter musicians sword if they were of short stature. Nothing can be found on musicians carrying the NCO sword however.
