    The funny thing about this is you can tell the bass player realizes part way through that Howe's lower harmony vocal is not enough to carry this song. He realizes he needs to sing the lead. He's totally not prepared for it, but pulls it off and (almost) saves the performance. Bravo to that guy. Not sure who he is (maybe Tim Harries?) but I gotta give him credit. Look how happy Howe gets when he starts singing the lead. On the other hand, maybe he was supposed to sing the lead part from the beginning but just missed his cue ... he did have a microphone after all. If that's the case, boo to that guy. Oh well. Really good bass playing in any case.

  • @Aquarivania
    @Aquarivania 10 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    I don't see why everyone's complaining. He's doing his vocal harmonies that he does in the actual recording. He didn't learn to sing the vocals how Jon did, so of course he'll sing in the harmonies; it's a reflex for him, just as it would be for Chris. Harmonies aren't there to show off their singing abilities, it's to emphasize the vocals at a certain moment. Whether it's live or the recording, his harmonies sound great with Jon. Personally, there's nothing wrong with his voice here, as I can clearly hear that he's singing as he normally does in Yes or with Jon, not as does if he was to sing solo.

      The problem with Steve doing _harmony vocals_ here, if that is indeed what's happening, is that there are no _melody vocals_ for them to underlie. It's like hanging a frame with no picture.

    • @lesimprosdulezardvert1342
      @lesimprosdulezardvert1342 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Robert_St-Preux 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lesimprosdulezardvert1342 , even simpler: choose your material. If the song requires something you don't have, pick another song. They could have done "Clap" or "Mood for a Day" with Bill improvising some percussion and we could be having a much better conversation, lol.

    Oof. Howe gives us an important lesson as to why you DON'T SING THE HARMONY AS THE LEAD LINE.
    He's technically singing in key and correctly. But all of the notes count as weak notes, because of their relation ship to the key being played.
    He actually did a stripped down version of this kind of thing with just him and an acoustic guitar during a smal club tour he did. It worked ok, but he only did certain songs. Not this one.

  • @chrisb949
    @chrisb949 11 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Wow. I've never seen this before. I don't know why anyone thought that Steve Howe doing lead vocals would be a good idea. It's bad. On the other hand, I thought it was interesting. As a few others have pointed out, Howe is actually singing his harmony part, he's wisely not trying to replicate Jon Anderson. I've always wondered where Howe fit in on those old Anderson/Squire/Howe harmony blends, and here it is.

    • @Stoovey24
      @Stoovey24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Given that it is a three piece performing a song from a much larger group, this was an interesting experience. Howe wasn't bad. Nobody who knows anything about singing would honestly say he sang out of key, out of tune. Most people just aren't aware of the different vocal parts, so they can't comprehend this perform. It really wasn't bad.

    First of all I'm surprised at the choice of song. In this stripped down format Long Distance Runaround would have made more sense even though it's less familiar to the general public. As clueless as the hosts are, I like it when bands like this go on really mainstream programs so they get the exposure and not some weak pop band. Now the vocals were awful. The harmony singer is not necessarily right to sing lead. Let the bassist sing. Get Tony Levin to sing. Or Bruford. Granted none of them would be as good as Anderson but anything would have been better than this.

    I gave this a thumbs up just for the comedic value. Nobody should take this too seriously. You can tell that Bill Bruford isn't.

    It's funny that they keep calling them "Yes". Lol. Regis and Kathy Lee probably had never even heard of them before that morning. But i get the feeling that KL likely knew of Owner. I peg Regis as a massive Neil Sedaka fan. Lol.

    ~~ it was Howe along with Squire that gave YES it's signature backing vocals sound behind Jon Anderson's great lead vocals - as good as the ABWH tour in the late 80's was - you could really hear what they were missing without Chris Squire's voice ..

    Harmony works best when the melody is present. That's kind of what makes it a harmony.

    Why not let the bassist sing the main melody from the start?

    So, this disc 'Symphonic Music of Yes' was released in October 1993, so I suppose this appearance have been around the time of its release. However, Union was well over at this point and according to the website 'Forgotten Yesterdays' Steve and Bill left the band in 1992 already. Sadly the site records no action for the band in 1993, but the fact that they appeared on this show as 'Yes' along with that other guy on bass seems slightly baffling to me.

    I have to give Steve credit; it took guts to sing that alone. Now we know why he never sang lead with Yes.

    Ya know, for an ordinary mortal you could say, "okay, his singing barely cuts it." But this is one of the GREATEST rock guitarists of all time, wasting our time on mediocre vocals. I get pissed off every time he tries to sing lead because he is such a GREAT guitarist.

    This performance was as badly matched between the audience and the artists as it gets. The only people who watched or attended the program live were middle-aged housewives. They wouldn't have bought a Yes album if their lives depended on it. This is a venue more suited for women who listen to Air Supply.
    And let's not ignore Howes' weak vocal performance. The entire performance needs to be filled under the "WTF Were They Thinking?" category.

    The bassist’s name is Tim Harries and he is actually a pretty respectable bassist in his own right. Please don’t let this performance lead you to believe he isn’t a good bassist.
