Man I really wish I had this video when I was 16. My vision and future goals were so fuzzy and unclear in my high school years, and it had a huge lack of focus on where I wanted to be. As I'm turning 25, I'm still unsure what I really want to be with my art. It's what I love doing most, but the contents of my work is pinballing pretty rapidly, and I feel that it's keeping me from getting really good and committing to get properly skilled for my desired jobs. In short, I feel I lack focus, and depression isn't making my progress any better. I don't know, maybe this is just my depression talking, but I just gotta fuckin' go for it and take that leap to find my place.

Thank you Trent, I'm currently 18 and a senior in HS, but I'll be attending college. I definitely wasted a lot of my time in high school with silly things like games, and youtube videos, and other stuff, but I hope I can give myself a second shot in college and focus more of my time on doing art. My question is, does age matter at all? I tend to get overwhelmed so easily by seeing all the other better artists around me, and have only just started creating digital art and coloring my works. I'm worried that I have squardered too much of my time already with the bad habits I've formed.
Thank you for your inspiring videos as always man, cheers.

I don't think it's too late mate (I think), I mean if you really love what You're doin And also don't think you've wasted time, If You've enjoyed the time you wasted then it's not a waste of time🙌🏼

Age doesn't matter in the slightest. No matter how old you are, be it 18 or 50, if you're feeling inspired to create and grow, then nothing can stop you, and with time you'll get to a level where you can reach those goals you've set for yourself. Remember to do it for yourself, do it out of your love for the activity, and let it inspire you to grow.

There's a guy you and others with the same worry may want to check out, and I mean how he got into art and when. He's definitely not alone also, as far as age and walks of life go. You may even know his works without knowing him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsutomu_Nihei 😉 but yeah, he put hard work into it. that's never optional.

@So this is Sothis Lots of people are in the same boat.
The most important advice I can give is this: Find focus. Whether you decide to dedicate yourself within a specific field, be it 2D character artist, environment concept artist, game artist and whatnot, find that field you want to focus on, learn as much as you can within that field, practice consistently and really try to stay hungry for improvement as well as regularly getting feedback on your work (If you're learning by yourself, I recommend joining discord servers and other forums where you can share your work and gather feedback. It's also important to ask for specific feedback to get a clearer path going forward).
Be sure to enjoy it first and foremost, then set out some goals and milestones, for example starting with smaller milestones like learning a certain level of anatomy, making your first portfolio pieces, then building those milestones towards maybe getting a job in a specific company or building a sustainable freelance career.
Find a field to specialize in, love the process, stay hungry for improvement and be as consistent as you can. Don't beat yourself up if you don't draw every day, it's about finding what works for You while making clear progress. Every person is unique, and we thrive in different ways. You don't have to stick with just one field your whole life though, just look at Trent, he's done so many things in the professional art field, but it still takes focus to get really good at something at a time so to say.
Best of luck to you, I truly wish you the very best in your journey and future endeavours.

The advice for artists in their 20s isn't that dissimilar. But you should be focusing on getting employment or getting paid for your art.

@@TrentKaniuga agree with you 100% been bustin my ass the past couple of months, learnin new skills and pushin myself to the limits. • @Ianuarius
      @Ianuarius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@SM-xy6py The chances of getting hired go up exponentially if you can prove three things. 1) you can make amazing things, 2) you can make them fast, 3) you can finish stuff.
Then it's just a matter of getting to that point. The first point doesn't say "make everything". So, to cut the amount of learning you need to do, just focus on one thing, and excel on that.
Of course, if you're like me, you can't focus on anything, so you keep doing everything, and you still can't do anything well when you're 35, haha.

    • @RickTheSnake90
      @RickTheSnake90 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Ianuarius Trent is right in the clip however. Your three points are law, and for younger people, that's where the starting point must be. However, it's the "focus on one thing" that can be difficult to pinpoint in a market like art, where said focus can change fairly rapidly over time and across different specialties. Solid core skills are essential, but they're not sufficient. You got to hone them constantly and like it is often said here, be on top of what makes people want to see them employed by YOU, and how and where they want it. That includes employers, and that's also why time is worth gold. As you go on, you have less and less time. Hence the need to have a clearer focus and direction. Wasting time is the worst possible thing, including wasted training time.
Back in the day, you had a few lousy books and youtube was mostly an amateur thing. Institutional learning was rarely about forming professionals, doubly so for emerging fields like game art, concept art and so on. Now, top level professionals can actually earn money by being educators, something that back in the day was definitely not a guarantee.
Today i can just hit the net, find people like Trent, and yeah, invest a few bucks for the kind of training material that would have cost you thousands not so long ago. Thousands AND obligatory attendance somewhere. There's so much in fact, that the issue is now shifting to *which* educator is offering materials suited to your professional goals. Compared to how it was before, seriously, it's an awesome problem to have. lol.

My favorite manga is Bakuman, which is a story of two highschoolers who start to draw manga. The characters and story are amazing, not to mention the artwork. It's by the guys who made Deathnote. The anime is fine, but it's shredded into pieces, because it's only 3 seasons. Read the manga. It's inspiring as hell. AND also tackles the dating part from the point of view of guys who want to be pros.

I agree with everything here besides the sleep part, you man you would have been probably even better to day if you would have slept properly cause you NEED to sleep to memorize what you learn properly, its called spaced repetition cause during sleep you digest what you have learned the previous day, so even if you draw 15-16 hours only do it if you actually can sleep 7 to 8 hours so yeah your literal whole day

I'm in college right now, but ironically, I have way more free time now than I did in high school. In high school I spent my entire life just studying, I had little to no free time at all. Kinda hard to improve your art skills and make comics when you spend your time studying. I think a lot of people can relate to the pressure from parents of going into STEM and getting good grades. I was told my art was not the priority. I'm studying game programming now (I wish it was game art, but welp) and I have more free time actually, because you just work from 9-5 on project work, and the rest of the evening is just your own free time, no homework or studying for exams, which is very similar to how having a studio job would be. So actually, you do have more free time when having a job than when you're in high school. Right now, I use my evenings from 6pm to 12am to work on my comic and self-study animation. My art has DRASTICALLY improved. Of course, I'm living alone and don't have a family to take care of. I know you have much less free time when you have a family to take care of. But that's to say that 'you have so much free time in high school' is not necessarily true.

I still do not know why they force kids to do that. I cannot work or do homework in that condition to this day. Once college started and I was able to get up at 8-9 for classes and take night time my productivity went up by 500% lol. Never give up and always grind. Jama Jurabaev started pretty late in his 40s or 30s ( gotta look up the exact number ) in Turkey where there were not youtube or gumroad. Now he is one of the most amazing professional artists there is. Works for movie studios in London. It is all about the grind and working out your art muscle. My only qualm about all the video is that the artist is holding a pencil in one panel and the picture he's drawing is already completely inked, so it would make more sense if he was holding a brush or a fountain-pen or something like that. Also it's true before it was complicated to cost your pens, pencils and brushes, the paper, the ink... Nowadays you make an investment in a tablet, grab an open-source program like Krita and you can draw and paint FOREVER. You only need to pay the light and internet bills though but still, you can make a lot of bucks from each digital painting session if you are clever enough to make those bills look moot and start to see more and more bucks piling up for your future savings. I studied engineering and medicine and kept drawing on the margin of the books and notebooks so everyday I thumbnailed something and on weekends I would draw a full res of any of the thumbnails that caught me fancy. Like, there is no excuse for not drawing at all if you have a pencil or a ball-point in between your fingers and a paper on the table. Perhaps it was easier for me to switch from "scientist mode" to "artist mode" on a whim, but if you really can't find a time to draw, then you don't have time to take notes for your studies either. Even when drawing graphics for physics or vivisections for biology, in the end you DRAW. That's another reason why my engraving like style caught the eye of my art teachers but told them down that I wanted to finish my science careers first and that drawing was just a hobby to unwind my mind. That and writing of course... With 15 years I had burnt through so many sheets of paper filling them with doddles and the like and never failed in my studies. A truth is, I had no social life so perhaps you must sacrifice something in exchange of your FREEDOM to do whatever you like to do, and let the muppets waste their time doing their shenanigans like procrastinating studies or wasting themselves in a bar, ANY bar. So yeah, if you feel like you don't own the agenda of your life, then you don't have time to draw, nor study nor whatever you wish to do in reality.

I’m currently 15, binge watching your videos. I’m graduating next year and I’ve always loved art. But I’m scared, hearing all that makes me really scared, I already have trouble finding friends. I live in a small German village and most people don’t like me. I can’t bring myself to do anything, can’t even get out of bed. I’m scared of not having any electricity at the end of the year. My country is currently breaking apart. I wanna make money but I’m not very good at art and I also need to earn money fast to support my family. It’s just so tempting to just throw everything away and work a basic 9-5 job. I absolutely love games like Slime Rancher, but having family to force you into normal jobs is really really discouraging

Be brave. Be hopeful. Don't be afraid to work hard toward your dream. Work a job that pays the bills so that you can pursue your art goal, until art pays your bills. Don't talk yourself out of a good life. I grew up poor, and desperate. I worked in fast food for $4 per hour, and stayed up all night studying art until art became my job. You can overcome, if you have the mind to do so.

Hey! I'm 21 and I'm in my 3rd year in university (out of 4). I started my grade (Computer Engineering) with a lot of excitement as I thought that was going to be what I would love to do everyday. Now that I've been 3 years inside it, I don't regret having applied to it, but I don't see my future clear at all, and by this I mean that I don't know if I'll work as an engineer, as a teacher, in my country, in my music, etc.
So if you're 19 and don't have a clear vision of what to do don't worry. My advice would be "choose something you really like and start working seriously on it". If you LOVE art, but also love 3 other subjects, choose one or two and start working on them. Even if you change your opinion in a few years and want to move from one to another you won't regret having worked on whatever you choosed because you love it and that's why you choosed it in the first place.
English is not my first language but I hope everything makes sense!

Check out my videos about how to monetize your art, and "those other jobs in the game industry" for a few ideas. you need to start getting paid quickly so that you can solidify your trajectory. It will be easier for you to stay in the art field if you start making money (even a little) ASAP. Go with your favorite thing to draw, and focus on tutorials and specialize your skills to develop your portfolio tailored to that direction.

I hope by sharing my story someone might see themselves in me and rethink. I have been drawing since I remember myself, when I was around 14 I saw this video of pewdiepie about how he was able to start his youtube career and make some short money by making art work for book covers etc. and I thought I will do that but I went to a HS where you study 2nd degree math with the thought of becoming a programmer (weird Balkan school system, you choose what u will study at 14 after 7th grade with little to no extra classes to add), I was doing ok at maths until 10th grade I started skipping school , by this point I gradually had given up drawing anything. University choice came around and my grades were shit so I enrolled in some Mechatronics, went there for a day and I had this gut feeling “I am at the wrong place” because it reminded me of those DIY classss where the teachers are usually drunkards or wholesome idiots. After two days I was like nahh this is not for me. Dropped out, went to western europe for better pay, there one day at the car wash, that I was working at, we had less work and some free time I picked a pen and doodled some stuff on a cardboard. Idk to this day if the 12 hour shifts and lack of sleep drove me insane or what exactly happened but I realised I capable of more than washing cars, for the past 3 years ( I went to the UK when I was 19) I have been trying to figure out what plan to follow and how to execute it. After some financial repairs last week I bought myself an iPad and a pencil (went for the budget option not the apple pencil) and a couple of courses, wish the story ends here with a happy end where I have made it as a freelance concept artist but I am still working on it. Know that following your passion is for people with balls and sometimes you have to forge those glorious balls with a lot of work and it will suck and it will be awesome and it will be whatever. But now I reflecting I know that I have what it takes, hope people don’t have to go through similar things and jobs as me because it will destroy you. Keep your goal in mind and nothing will withstand you and success is beyond the void of unknown.

Wow, I really found this video helpful. I'm 17, I really want to become an animator, and I have been essentially following all of this advice for the last four years... but I'm struggling with one aspect discussed in this video, networking with other people. Similar to how you described yourself, I'm not socially.... good. Despite this, I have tried my best to find other high school students who are as passionate about animation as I am, I even started an animation club, trying to combine my social life and my love of animation, but there just aren't many people who are committed to art, and even fewer in with animation. What I'm getting at is, I'm worried that as a heavily introverted animator moving into the professional industry, I'm not going to know how to network, which I know is one of the most important skills as an animator. Do you, or anyone else have any advice on where and how to learn these skills?

    • @TrentKaniuga

There are conventions for professionals in animation and game development that you can go to. You can get involved with lightbox expo, or find discord groups that are dedicated to this. Meet people online first and offer a lot to them so that you become memorable and essential to the group. Have lots to offer (even just paintovers, links to good resources, or just fun times), and you'll always have people wanting you around.

My advice as someone who does this work is:
    1. Push for an entry level position early. A low paying initial art job on which you learn relevant skills is more valuable than tutorials. The money isn't going to come for a few years... You need to get good.
    2. Focus extremely heavily on fundamentals and get guidance from people who actually teach them well.
    3. Talent is absolutely a thing and there's not much you can do about it. You can work hard and build your skills up, but some people are going to be way way better or really bad initially. Hard work can close that gap significantly, but being jealous of someone else isn't relevant to an art career.
Eg. Trent, Proko, Marco Bucci, Scott Robertson tuts, etc. are good teachers. Not every good artist can teach. Remember that.

Hey Trent, I think my comment disappeared or something so here I go again without the link.
I (21) am currently doing Drawabox and plan on doing Marc Brunets art school next.
My problem is that I am starting a full time job in september (not in art) and will be short on time for about 2-3 years.
My goal is to get into concept art (probably at 30 or smth), but my art skills are... very mediocre.
I think dab will take till october until I am done and MB's art school would take up the remaining 3 years.
My current struggle is the question if I should disregard the 50% rule on the dab-site and do art school as well while I have to time to do them both.
This might be a bad idea when the time struggle comes into play.
My other option would be to do dab and just draw for fun for the other half of the day.
Maybe this entire approach is not a great idea, but I thought having a curriculum to guide me would be a great help.

Trent, is there a way to network with people without having your ideas stolen? Or maybe a way to lower the risk of it? I'm not too scared because my thought is that if they steal the premise I can still make a better story. But working with someone they might get you and maybe have better art or something. And before that just finding people of a similar skill lvl is hard. Is your discord really a good place for that or is it more so just talking about art? I'm in it but I haven't talked to anyone. I focused so much in getting good grades in Highscool that I took all the accelerated classes I could get and never worked on my art. It was the same story when I went to my university. I had a figure drawing class I loved but I only drew art 4 hours of the week. Looking back on it it sucks but now I'm 23 switching from Graphic Design to concept art and every choice I made led me to where I am now and to say the least. I'm happy o be honest. Awesome video. I'm 34 and I can say I tried soooo many times to find even a SINGLE FCKN HUMAN ENTITY who could join to me to draw/paint/shoot photos/videos/workout in gym/make music .. man ... ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I've failed to find one. I have a lot of friends so I'm not that guy who is unbearable or something like that. I've begged to people to please do something together. Even my wife choosed DJ-ing over anything else that I prefer. I'm doomed to be alone with my hobbies. And it's much harder and most of the times it can be really boring.

You may have to just find a group that’s already doing that stuff. Look for meetups online that are in your area, or take a class to meet people, instead of trying to start your own group.
