Thank YOU for watching! This is my first long form video since The Promised Neverland so I hope you got some enjoyment out of it. I'll be uploading again in the next few days talking about a film I really want you guys to go see and then I'll be BACK ON SEASONAL. If there is any seasonal anime you'd like me to cover let me know by replying to this comment and maybe I'll make a video on it... Again thank you as always and forever for your support. See you again soon!

I have always regarded both Tamako Market and Tamako Love Story as feel good anime that wholly embody the simple feeling of being at home, but I always felt that the two anime were so much more than that. Through this video, you put all the "more" that I couldn't quite put a name to before into words, which, when combined with your quite impeccable editing, made me feel an array of powerful emotions that can typically only be coaxed out by those media that I usually describe as masterpieces. Tamako Love Story is one such masterpiece which I hold near and dear to my heart, and now, this video about the studio and anime I love so much might just be another one. Suffice it to say that this is definitely my favorite video of yours yet, and I look forward to seeing whatever you have in store in the future. Thank you so much Isla!
How dare you not censor that handholding!? Demonotization incoming! In all seriousness that tone drop... T_T wait to completely take control of the audience. You can tell how much understanding you have of direction and scripting. Brilliant video as always Isla.
I'm not a fan of romance, but I can't help but love tamako love story and I've never really known exactly why. But I think you've cleared that up for me. It's so much more than just a romance ( no afence to those who like romances) it's a story about the beauty and hard ships of life. And that really gets to me. The last few shots in Love Story of Midori always broke my heart when rewatching them. I don't know what I was expecting from the title of the video, honestly kind of confused, but the explanation and expression you gave definitely made me think more about the characters and the film itself. It's sad to think about what brought this on, but I'm really happy another person has experienced this beautiful show. Anyways, thanks for making me break into tears on Friday.
I really really really hope your channel gets waaay more traction in the anime community. You can feel just how much heart and effort you put into each and every one of your videos. A lot of other people can come off as insincere or maybe distant in their videos, but it's real easy to tell you mean every word you say. Keep doing what you love so I can keep loving what you do Isla!

Tho i didn't get to talk abt it w any of my friends bcs i cant find any of them watching this great show. Isla, I'm home alone rn and feeling lonesome so I was like "I'm going to watch videos of people I love so I can hear their voices" and I realized I had yet to watch this one. So I did. And I'm CRYING. Everything you said was so beautiful. "We don't get to choose how we die. But we can choose how we live." I felt my entire body EVAPORATE. I can't explain it. Sometimes you just hear a phrase that puts everything into perspective and I love how you were able to get that from Yamada's work. Art is so powerful and the way you interpret it is the reason it's so important. I love you and I love this.
everything abt tamako market is so real. Her innoncence for life and curiousity makes her an interesting character, the decisions she makes, the things she does, it's all thought out right. Mochizou's POV is also so real and i love it
DAT EDITING THO I get that it's Kyoto Animation aka editor's paradise (due to an insane number of striking shots), but emotional build-up here and in Hibike video was done pitch-perfect and unlike anywhere else. You should kinda work on your pronunciation a little or consider build-in subtitles. Some sentences took me two or three viewings to get. Granted, I'm not a native speaker, but this is a problem I haven't had a long time, at least on TH-cam. =========================================== Yeah, I also chose to rewatch Tamako Market in honor of Kyoto Animation for some weird reason. I usually add subtitles to my videos but have been working a lot so I didn't get the chance to upload subs right away - I will tho! It is absolute god tier movie wise, I'd say its downright perfect for me anyway!
Lmao you can't just tell someone to work on their pronunciation when it's their accent 🤣 it's not their fault you can't understand the way they naturally speak
Thanks for making this! Just watched the movie and the title was what attracted me to this video and I wanted to hear what you had to say, I was not disappointed! You have a talent with words, Arigato! 💯
I couldn’t grasp why I love Tamako Market but was left hanging by Tamako Love Story, but after watching this I understand. My frame of mind for approaching the movie was wrong, which was the reason why I missed many details in the movie. Thank you! I’ll give it some time before rewatching this.
So just like you, tamako market was on my watch list for some time, and I finally got around to start watching it three weeks ago. Yesterday I finished the series by watching the movie tamako love story. So I'm very glad I could understand your references by watching this series so recently. I wouldn't say it was wrong of me to move this series above others in my queue, because it's honestly a really good story and I feel the human characteristics between all the characters, but your video just put a ribbon on a beautiful story by showcasing things I hadn't observed before.
I'm relatively new to the anime scene and I was in desperate search for an anime romance movie after I watched "Whisper of the Heart" and I found this film was recommended by a lot of people! So I sat down skimmed through Tamako market (not a huge fan of Slice of life, and GOD that friggen bird haha) and then watched this movie and was so struck by it. It wasn't extremely romantic but I kept thinking about it for days. There was something so magical about watching each of the characters grow up by letting go of something. Whether it be their feelings for tamako, Their fear of heights, their life in japan, The regrets of hiding their feelings, their dislike of their neighbors son (haha), or the childlike idea that everything will stay the same always. But what really struck me as powerful and different from so much of the typical depressing 'coming of age' theme, was that even tho you let go of childhood you gain something different and quite possibly better? New found freedom, A new view, life in a new country, the strength to keep going, a new son (eventually....hopefully lol), or a Love story! Even tho you let go of that childish boob mochi shaped rock it just freed your hands to catch a cup to a greater adventure!!! :)) Thanks for the video!!
Thanks for your comments on Kyoto Animation. I feel the same way. (As I’m sure you probably know.) I’ve tried so many times to talk about what happened and I just can’t. It sucks. I want to do a video on how angry I am, how frustrated I am, and attempt to say something that could actually positively affect the conversation and it’s been basically impossible without sinking into a deeper sadness. Thanks for touching on that softly and respectfully. One of my only (unspoken?) criticisms of your stuff has been your over reliance on Pathos, but I feel like your Ethos has improved a huge amount and, in particular, this video struck a very nice balance between review and personal diary. Probably one of your best vids. And as always, gorgeously edited. Congratulations on that. And thanks for the wonderful recommendation.
I use a lot of pathos because I'm internally sad probably it's a cathartic way for me to let it all out or really I'm probably just drawn to that kind of thing. Thank you tho!! Always appreciate your comments and thoughts pal and I hope you enjoy love story when you watch it!
I think I’m gonna binge Evergarden in the next few days. Once I’ve polished off some videos and I’ve got a job under my person I think I’ll feel a lot more comfortable. We need more positive KyoAni videos in the feed right now. You’re doing the lord’s work with regards to that. Hang in there. Keep being awesome. I’ll get the joy buzzers ready for your 10K celebration as well. And a pre-emotive congratulations! You deserve it.
The romantic elements are definitely there, but aren't the main focus. She confirms the romance and comes of age by finally catching that string phone and confessing. With Tamako's rendition of Koi No Uta during the end credits, the story ties itself together like a silk bow. For those who might still want a morsel of the happenings of Usagiama, there is still "Anko's Lovely Diary" floating out there somewhere.
I really liked the movie but the ending left me soo unsatisfied😩 Like what happens after that?! I searched everywhere but I can’t find ANYTHING about the two and what happens with their relationship 💀 Everything about this show is so bittersweet
This is probably the seventh video essay I've watched from this channel, and I just got to say that I adore these content. Understandably, I've watched the anime that are the subjects to such essays and already have emotional attachments to it, but Isla McTear's insights at certain points (paired with good video editing) honestly raises nape hair and clenches hearts. I hope you keep doing what you do, there are a lot of AniTubers in the platform but you, you my friend, are special.
I got curious on your title why Tamako love story isn't a LOVE STORY but upon watching your video I kinda get what you mean. Surely the movie doesn't focus or revolves around the love story of Tamako and Mochizo. The movie has a lot of things going on like the characters where going to embark on a new journey in their life, towards adulthood that's why they are making choices and decisions for the betterment of their future lives. As per the "love story" part in this movie is somewhat like the unspoken feelings, the confession, the reciprocated feelings. As per the love story of Tamako, yes I think that it is just a beginning or her journey towards her "love story" with Mochizo. I love this anime/movie, I also watch the Tamako Market before I watched this. I'm happy that she will end up with Mochizo even if he goes to Tokyo University to study.
Thank you THANK YOU for this absolutely phenomenal video on an absolutely amazing movie ❤️ it’s been a while since I last watched Tamako Love Story, and now I really want to go back and rewatch it! You expressed how I felt about the story so well and what makes both Tamako Market and Tamako Love Story so wonderful, and there were so many times I literally had to pause and/or rewind the video to really take in your insights. Simply beautiful, your message and analysis and understanding of this movie is incredible, and the way you reflect upon life is very touching. Words can’t express how moved I was watching this, thank you :’)
This show and movie has been on my watch list for so long because I know I will absolutely love it but this video solidified that thought and I am watching ASAP!! Two years later still a great video!!
Another great vid, Isla. Your vids make me think about what Patty Jenkins said about Wonder Woman being 'cheesy': "Did you say cheesy? Cheesy is one of the words banned in my world. I’m tired of sincerity being something we have to be afraid of doing. It’s been like that for 20 years, that the entertainment and art world has shied away from sincerity, real sincerity, because they feel they have to wink at the audience because that’s what the kids like. We have to do the real stories now. The world is in crisis. I wanted to tell a story about a hero who believes in love, who is filled with love, who believes in change and the betterment of mankind. I believe in it. It’s terrible when it makes so many artists afraid to be sincere and truthful and emotional, and relegates them to the too-cool-for-school department. Art is supposed to bring beauty to the world." Thank you for being so sincere in your love for the topics of your vids. It's much better than all of the snark and sarcasm. There really is no better feeling than stupidly happy.
I love what you said about Patty Jenkins that's one hell of a great way to look at media. Like, ah that's so cool! There really isn't! Finding a show or a movie or something like that which makes you happy is a beautiful thing and I'm glad Tamako Market/Love Story can do that for me Thank you for being so kind
wow... this video was really, really good. this was my first time watching one of your videos (super eyepatch wolf recommendations!) so added to that the subject matter of tamako market/love story... my expectations were rather high haha. however, you blasted my standards out of the water-- this video was filled with exactly the kind of feeling i get when i watch something kyoani, with their signature touch of human, and the passion you put into your voice and script was on every level enjoyable.. you put translated into words my muddled thoughts exactly on the tamako series. I especially loved the part at 3:10 -- "instead of leaving them forgotten, yamada celebrates them". that line hit particularly hard. ill definitely keep this video in my thoughts, thank you for making it.
Nice to see you back isla the fire of Kyoto animation shock as all but our community came together i hope this video can give us a closure to this incident and help us remember and support Kyoto animation in its time of needs
i like this movie a lot. your editing, storytelling, and cinematography are very good. by cinematography i mean your choices of clips to use. very good job.
Saw this video a while ago, just wanted to come back to thank you, a lot, as it inspired me to note down Tamako Market in my to-watch list, this past week I finally saw the series, and earlier today, the movie... I don't know... I loved it all, every episode was such a joy to watch, and now that it's over for me I'm left with this very strange sensation in my chest. Despite the many great shows I've watched lately, this one is truly special, Probably the one that made me feel the most. And here I'd thought for the longest time that it would only be cute girls doing cute things, and a weird bird.
I absolutely ADORE this series & movie, and cry every time i hear Koi no Uta, even when being sung off-key by Tamako 😆 Thanks very much for making this video! ☺️
I have never been in a relationship buttttt..... If i were in Mouchizou's shoes, id fell like dying inside too The worst felling is when u confess to a person you really like and getting a silent as a response, getting rejected or being ignore forever
Thanks for another amazing video, Isla. Love your content. Just knew this one was going to conclude with that awesome ending song from Tamako Love Story.
This was beautiful, thank you Isla. It’s a tragedy what happened at KyoAni but i bury myself in their works and experience my emotions about it all in a less direct way. I didn’t feel too strongly about Tamako Market (it was cute and the OP / ED are classic KyoAni, i just didn’t feel like the story was going anywhere in particular at the end), but Tamako Love Story is classic Yamada brilliance. I also like how the film end rather open-ended at the Kyoto station, as if they’re saying ‘whatever happens next, is Tamako’s & Mochizou’s story. Our part in this is done.’ On another note, i’m going on a roadtrip through Japan in October and definitely plan on visiting the KyoAni studio in Kyoto, heartbreaking as it may be. I just have to, or i’ll never forgive myself for not going...
Firstly! I am also heading to Japan in October - although it's next October. If you do anything over there that you think is particularly awesome please let me know! I'm keen to build a list so I don't miss out when I go over for 2 weeks! And secondly thank you so much, what happened at KyoAni was beyond heartbreaking so I just wanted to make something in celebration. Tamako Love Story is perfect Yamada, it might even be my favourite of her works and I'm tentative to admit that because she has so many wonderful anime under her belt. Again thank you for watching and commenting!!
Isla McTear actually October will be my second visit to Japan (i did a citytrip in 2015 from Tokyo to Hakone (beautiful little hot spring resort town), Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe) so i have some experience what to expect. Do you have a more direct way for me to contact you (over e-mail for example) because i feel listing everythin on a YT comment will be a little awkward to read. xD Thank you for the lovely comment as always, stay strong and be yourself!
beautifully put. i do think it's a love story though. i just finished it and i feel a void knowing that there's not another series or film about tamako's story... yet.
I'm so glad that Beyond Ghibli pointed out your channel. You have such an amazing way in sharing your thoughts! So much passion and love in your voice. I watched most of Tamako Market (I think) and I didn't know there was a follow up movie. I'll have to go look for it, after finishing the regular series. lol Thanks for making this video. It was also a great tribute to KyoAni.
Ah I love Joe thank you for coming over from his recommendation! You'll need to watch the movie it's different from the TV series but the same! Thank you so much for watching!!
Nice stuff! Subscribed. Been binge watching a lot of anime in the evil year of 2020, just saw this one last night. The series, and the show - top notch quality all around. I'm growing a bit tired of the school genre, but this Tamako Market had more slice of life element to it, than school which is why I really enjoyed it.
@@animenetic8340 The show (Tamako Market) overall is goofy/happy mood most of the time. The movie sequel (Tamako Love Story) is a bit more serious, but I would say that it has a happy ending.
Tbh I never cried while watching this movie but I got emotional spending a long time locked in my room watching this twice the end when tamako said she loved mochi-sun that's when I got emotional it was a beautiful story and when I saw the title of the video you got me confused
Omg. Your channel is so good, your content and style is similar to Gikkuk and it's just so enjoyable to watch your video. Whenever I'm looking for a new anime or just want to get emotional I just go to your channel. Truly you're one of the most underrated anime youtuber on the net
Ah I love Garnt, he's a great guy! This comment is awesome thank you so very much - I'm really glad you come to my channel for that! I'm doing my work right!
Gonna start the series tomorrow. Thank you for the recommendation. Loved the video! Gonna subscribe now, hope to see more from you from now on. Hit it girl!
Having just finished Tamako Love Story, I can't help but feel a little bit disappointed. Not because it was a bad movie, it wasn't. All things considered, I actually quite like it, it just didn't make me feel a whole lot of things. And I'm usually rather easy to be moved to tears. Sometimes from the most unlikely of places, hell I cried my eyes out watching Kill la Kill. But somehow Tamako Love Story didn't really do all that much for me. It's still a very well made movie and I'd recommend everyone to watch it. It does deserve that.
hey there, isla not sure if you care much, but i came to your channel based on eye-patchwolfs recommendation, where he meant you make some really great content, Holy Crap he sold you short! i truly have never seen anything that so perfectly captures what amazing anime do to me, the words flow so nicely, the music is superb, and the emotion in your voice just broke me thank you for making such amazing content, i have some catching up to do ^^
I care a TON. First up, I really appreciate you coming over from Eyepatches channel that was so kind of him to shout me out like that. And your lovely words about this video have totally made my day! Thank you for coming over and checking out what I do and I hope you enjoy what I create in the future!
Or, how to make me emotional in under 12 minutes and 3 seconds. Seems to be a trend with this channel : ) Best of luck to Yamada and the rest of KyoAni, wherever they go from here.
I've basically defined my life now as "before watching Tamako Love Story" and "after Tamako Love Story". Great video, explained I've been trying to make about this movie but could never put into words.
Thank YOU for watching! This is my first long form video since The Promised Neverland so I hope you got some enjoyment out of it.
One of the best anime related videos I've seen in recent memory. You are the future of scripted anime editorials.
Dude this is the highest compliment THANK YOU
I'll keep watching!
Came here from beyondghibli. WOW! Wasn't expecting to get teary-eyed today, that was great actually! Looking forward to watching more!!
Wow Isla. This video was amazing. You sold me on trying the Tamako series. Again just amazing.
okay, now I'm seeing why I didn't enjoy the movie the first time through, because I was expecting a love story
Same tho
now i get it
I really liked the movie but the ending left me soo unsatisfied😩 Like what happens after that?! I searched everywhere but I can’t find ANYTHING about the two and what happens with their relationship 💀 Everything about this show is so bittersweet
The good story and this really good narrating is really a great combo.
Just rewatched this movie along with the show a couple of days ago, I still have that feeling of emptiness
This analysis was amazing! I love it
I just finished it today. Great way to wrap things up! This will help me so much with my review over it! Thank you for making this great video :)
Yeah a anime review that put out that kinda of energy when taking about the emotions on screen just as much as the visual. I'm subbing
This was really well said how you said everything made sense it was all so clear so I understood the whole thing very well
Thanks again for another lovely video, Isla. Always excellent insight and thoughts concerning both the anime and the tragedy at Kyoani.
Thank you pal
ok... you convinced me to watch it. this video was so incredible!
That's the highest compliment!! You can watch it without watching Tamako Market but imo I really enjoyed Tamako Market hehe!
This Had this old man in tears, thank you Isla, My God your writing is just tremendous.
dude what the heck this brought me on the verge of tears
I watched the movie today, absolutely loved it and your analysis!!! :))
Two years later still a great video!!
wow...I cant tell how well made this video was. You made me cry happy tears
Art is supposed to bring beauty to the world."
Thank you for being so sincere in your love for the topics of your vids. It's much better than all of the snark and sarcasm. There really is no better feeling than stupidly happy.
I love what you said about Patty Jenkins that's one hell of a great way to look at media. Like, ah that's so cool!
There really isn't! Finding a show or a movie or something like that which makes you happy is a beautiful thing and I'm glad Tamako Market/Love Story can do that for me
Thank you for being so kind
I had mixed feelings about Tamako Love Story because it didn't seem like a love story to me. Thank you for this video. It put my mind at ease.
Hello!! I just discovered your channel….I just finished watching TAMAKO LOVE STORY!! Man, this is a truly underrated movie….I love a good LOVE STORY….
That was wonderful!!! I very glad you talked about your feelings with the kyoani tragedy. I think alot of us felt that way. Thank you!
Get this woman an audio book deal STAT! Great job as always sis. Keep up the awesome.
Thank you so much bro you're awesome!
@@IslaMcTear Meh. Not a problem. Also Thanks. I am not that great, but thanks. :3
wow... this video was really, really good. this was my first time watching one of your videos (super eyepatch wolf recommendations!) so added to that the subject matter of tamako market/love story... my expectations were rather high haha. however, you blasted my standards out of the water-- this video was filled with exactly the kind of feeling i get when i watch something kyoani, with their signature touch of human, and the passion you put into your voice and script was on every level enjoyable.. you put translated into words my muddled thoughts exactly on the tamako series.
I’d never normally watch a show like this, but as always this review is fantastic. Definitely going on my watch list :D
i like this movie a lot. your editing, storytelling, and cinematography are very good. by cinematography i mean your choices of clips to use. very good job.
Thank you so very much - I'm really glad you liked the edits! I spent a long time on it :D
Saw this video a while ago, just wanted to come back to thank you, a lot, as it inspired me to note down Tamako Market in my to-watch list, this past week I finally saw the series, and earlier today, the movie...
I don't know... I loved it all, every episode was such a joy to watch, and now that it's over for me
I'm left with this very strange sensation in my chest.
Despite the many great shows I've watched lately, this one is truly special,
Probably the one that made me feel the most.
And here I'd thought for the longest time that it would only be cute girls doing cute things, and a weird bird.
I absolutely ADORE this series & movie, and cry every time i hear Koi no Uta, even when being sung off-key by Tamako 😆
Thanks very much for making this video! ☺️
I have never been in a relationship buttttt.....
If i were in Mouchizou's shoes, id fell like dying inside too
The worst felling is when u confess to a person you really like and getting a silent as a response, getting rejected or being ignore forever
You’re right in saying it’s for everyone but not everyone is gonna give it a chance.
Thanks for another amazing video, Isla. Love your content. Just knew this one was going to conclude with that awesome ending song from Tamako Love Story.
This was so beautiful! You can tell you have put a lot of thought into it. I absolutely love this! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😢
Our part in this is done.’
On another note, i’m going on a roadtrip through Japan in October and definitely plan on visiting the KyoAni studio in Kyoto, heartbreaking as it may be.
Do you have a more direct way for me to contact you (over e-mail for example) because i feel listing everythin on a YT comment will be a little awkward to read. xD
Thank you for the lovely comment as always, stay strong and be yourself!
As usual, I was sincerely moved by your work. Arigato gozaimashita.
This means so much - thank you!
Dangit Isla, you're making me add another show to my watchlist. I'm a sucker for romance, so this looks right up my alley.
I am very glad that you're also a sucker for romance shows Tim who doesn't love a bit of love eh!
beautifully put. i do think it's a love story though. i just finished it and i feel a void knowing that there's not another series or film about tamako's story... yet.
Tamako Market really shows the true potential of a Slice of Life anime.
You makes this video special bro
I haven’t even watched it yet and you made me cry. Damn. Lol
I cried watching this
I'm so glad that Beyond Ghibli pointed out your channel.
Thank you so much for watching!!
this video just made me appreciate the movie much more
Nice stuff! Subscribed.
Been binge watching a lot of anime in the evil year of 2020, just saw this one last night. The series, and the show - top notch quality all around. I'm growing a bit tired of the school genre, but this Tamako Market had more slice of life element to it, than school which is why I really enjoyed it.
God! The narrating's so good.
The ending of the story was the cutest thing
Does it have a happy ending? otherwise imma not watch it I m already sad enough.
Love this so much and how you expressed so well what i love about this movie.
As well your editing! I admire so much
Thank you so so so much! This is really kind! I'm super glad you enjoyed it!!!
I love your work, Isla. Another great video.
hey there, isla
not sure if you care much, but i came to your channel based on eye-patchwolfs recommendation,
where he meant you make some really great content,
Holy Crap he sold you short!
i truly have never seen anything that so perfectly captures what amazing anime do to me,
the words flow so nicely,
the music is superb,
and the emotion in your voice just broke me
thank you for making such amazing content,
i have some catching up to do ^^
I care a TON.
Seems to be a trend with this channel : )
Best of luck to Yamada and the rest of KyoAni, wherever they go from here.
Haha
I've basically defined my life now as "before watching Tamako Love Story" and "after Tamako Love Story". Great video, explained I've been trying to make about this movie but could never put into words.
Amazing review!!
Are there more shows like this, like a shopping street or cute slice of life things or family owned businesses
Amazing work! great choice of music too i loved it!
Thank you William I spent quite a bit of time deciding on what music to use!
Anime always shows emotional ending that's the reason fans hunger for s2
