- Céline Dion won the Eurovision Song Contest 1988 in Dublin for Switzerland with the song Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi with 137 points, only 1 point more than the runner-up United Kingdom.

Funny that she became so massively successful that her eurovision win is not even something most people mention!
many doesn't even know of the eurovision song contest after all it's mostly broadcasted in europe :)

French is one of Switzerland's national languages though. Majority of Switzerlands earlier Eurovision entries were in french.

the start of her amazing international career. I remember her when she was a teenager singing and liked her back then. Never would I have imagined she would do so well but how could I ever have doubted it? Part of the soundtrack of my life.

I was coming back from grocery shopping with my dad and the radio in the car was playing a program that focuses on songs from the 70s and 80s
A song that played was this one and the DJ said that Celine won the eurovision with this song. And I said to my dad:
-“Wait… Celine won the contest? But she is Canadian.”
He said:
-“yeah Celine started being a thing because of this song”
And then I fell into the rabbit hole of this contest.
I remember I did aome research on 2013 because I was a fan of Cascada back then… but I had no idea Celine was part of eurovision too

This song hides a “political” message
Back in 1988 the European project was in full development, the EEC of 10 members had become the EEC of 12 only 2 years ago, with Spain and Portugal just joining the Community. Throughout Western Europe the debate raged about whether to join the European project or not. On the Swiss side, we can summarize by saying that the French-speaking and Swiss-Italians were ready to say "yes" but Swiss-Germans were fiercely opposed. The Single Act had just been signed, opening the way for the Maastricht referendum : opening of borders with free movement, united standards, putting in place the basic to create a Single Currency around 1999. Foretheremore, Austria was starting to be ok to join, putting Switzerland completely isolated in open but united Europe. Never forget Eurovision was the very first program, excepting football Cups, broadcast in all European countries. You think my analysis is crazy? Don't forget in these old days, "Europe" was synonymous of union, peace, progress and trust to a better future. (Maybe not lived as this, for the Bristish side!)
Moreover, Toto Cutugno won the competition 2 years later with Isieme, which highlighted the advantage and beauty of being together, despite our differences. Some years later, "Wave your Flags" was another example.
In addition, Switzerland has 4 official languages, the choice of French is not insignificant, because the message is also addressed to the German-speaking part of the country.

Not really, there were far better songs than this, Croatia deserved it, better music. This year's contest is questionable after the unfair disqualification of Joost. If he could attend tha grand final the result might be total different.

This is a SONG contest and not a singer contest. The composer(s) of the song have to be from the country they represent - the singer(s)/performer(s) can be from any country - including countries that are not a part of Europe
