Dear Brother, I would like to respond to your video and share my thoughts. First of all, thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. It is important that we can discuss such topics honestly and openly. To begin with, I want to make it clear that I absolutely disagree with what Monica previously said about the Orthodox faith. Discrimination against a belief is unacceptable. However, in her second video, Monica talks about things she has recently heard or seen in Eritrea, such as her claim that priests are having relationships with each other. I think it’s important to approach this carefully. Instead of immediately passing judgment or reacting emotionally, it would be better to first investigate the accuracy of her statements. It is easy to reach out to Monica and ask for details: what exactly did she see or hear, and from whom? Additionally, information could be sought from the authorities in Eritrea to verify whether priests have actually been arrested for inappropriate behavior. What I see now is that there are mainly strong reactions coming in, without any real fact-checking. I find that unfortunate, as these are serious accusations that need to be examined objectively and thoroughly first. Furthermore, I want to point out that cases of abuse within religious communities occur not only in Eritrea but unfortunately everywhere in the world, including here in the West. There are plenty of examples of priests who have been convicted of serious crimes in Western countries, including many Eritrean priests. Often, those involved tell a different story than what emerges from official legal proceedings. Yet people sometimes rely on what is said internally, without knowing the full truth. What I want to emphasize is that openness and caution are essential. Let’s not just believe everything that is said, but first investigate what is really going on. This fosters more understanding and prevents misunderstandings from prevailing.
