I was in Thailand December 2022. At some of the events where they played the national anthem it was foreigners and older Thai people that stood up. Many of the young people from Southern Thailand did not stand up. Apparently, they have no respect for the new king and consider him a playboy living a dissolute life in europe. My Thai friends said Northern Thai youngsters still stand up. As a foreigner I will stand up but it is interesting that things are changing.
Great advice. I have a Thai wife and a large extended family in Thailand with whom i am very close . On my regular visits to the country over the last 20 years, i never cease to be amazed and embarrassed by the behavior of some tourists , to the point where I find myself avoiding tourist areas . The national anthem is played every night at 6pm on television, radio , and in public areas. If you are out and about at that time , stop what you are doing and stand in silence until it is finished . I will also remove my hat. It is a small thing but it will be noticed and apreciated by the locals , particularly when most of the other farang around you carry on totally oblivious. Learn to wai , and do it often , and always return a wai that is offered to you. My biggest tips for an enjoyable Thailand stay are to be polite , treat everyone with the utmost respect , and do nothing that might cause someone to lose face .
Related to the anthem, I was walking in a store aisle and then heard the anthem being played. Well, I was quickly guided to stand still. From then on, I was more mindful of the background store music. Also, good indicator of the time.
Huge shout out to you both for all your research and information. i contacted Visa assist on your say so Tony and they have been so helpful! I take notes from your vlogs which has taken the edge off the stress of relocating from Aus to Chiang Mai. Thank you!!
Thx for the rehash of “don’ts” lol…1st experience was at a family dinner and they plunked a roll of toilet paper on the table 😧 use as napkins..the left hand is the one for cleaning themselves after a bathroom journey..then there was a poor farang who lost a bill on a windy day and stopped it with his foot as it blew away, wonder if he’s out of jail yet..we have two ears and one mouth, we should use proportionally especially in Tland (or any country)..anyway, a fun vid, kop 🙏🏻🕊🇹🇭
Hi Tony...The husband and I just started watching your videos...very well presented content! What does your channel name, Narrow Gate come from? Thank you so much for the huge amount of useful info!
LOL - 'I know you may have this craving to touch a monk' - at the 30 second mark. I have many cravings but touching a monk isn't one of them - though there is probably an AA type group for people that do.
Wow, I know all of these things cultural traditions already and practiced them when I lived in Asia. Thailand is very similar to Japan and Korea. I would adjust much quicker to Thailand culture than any other American or foreigner.
Great tips on the no nos when visiting Thailand. Although I understand there are no real standard rules for service animals in the country, are you aware of whether it would be appropriate for me to visit the temples if my small service dog( i have a hearing disability )is secured in my front pack ? I would of course be dressed appropriately but just wonder what types of activities or areas may be problematic. Thank you for an informative video.
The problem with bringing a dog to the temple is the temple dogs. They are pretty much street dogs and very territorial. They will all start barking at your dog and follow you.
Interesting, I've found this holding of the right elbow with the left hand in Bangalore when Thai's hand over stuff(especially giving back money) and indeed pointing with all fingers(I thought they were doing it because they meant to cover a broader area:) but now I see your point). Is it easy to get a SIM card in Thailand if we go on short trips(say a week)? I remember you did an episode on the various mobile providers but I was wondering what is the best way to get a temporary sim for short trips? Your videos are brilliant and lots of useful info as I have everything almost set for my visit on April 1st week to Chiang Mai. I'm coming by Air Asia and what is confusing me is that there is an approximately 3 hour layover in Don Mueng Airport and I have eVisa, so normally in your trips do you have to clear the immigration formalities in the transit or is it done in the final destination(Chiang Mai). People have been giving me contradictory statements and AirAsia does not seem to have a customer care for international flights to call up and check here but my travel agent thinks its going to be Don Mueng so I'm a bit confused to be honest. Would love to meet up for a beer if you are free & happen to be in Chiang Mai around that time🤝. Great job with the videos!
Hi, thx 4 e many great videos. Just wanted to get ur opinion on this if i may. I am planning to retire in thailand this year. I am a 58 year old retiree from singapore. Would you think it is better to apply for my retirement visa while in Thailand on a social visit pass or apply it in my own country, singapore? Also how much does it cost if i were to have the agency apply it for me. Thanks for your kind attention and hope to hear your valuable opinion soon.
What video you have on banking…I make money but have risidual income and want to know how I am able to use over seas I’m assuming wire transfers through banks
TIP# DO NOT step on Thai money intentionally or by accident!! The image of the King of Thailand is printed on the currency so stepping on the money is showing disrespect to the monarchy. If the paper money flies away during high winds, do not be tempted to stomp the bill with your feet to keep it from flying away! This could possibly land you in jail for insulting the monarchy.

Great information. Thank you!
Great info, sir!

I’m definitely going to have a hard time with the hand stuff lol 😅
The hand sign for “come here” must be very confusing, because when you do it like that in America it typically means “shoo” or “go away”
Yes, exactly. 👍

One of the better attempts.

i would consider using the wise app. way more economical that bank transfer.
@@tg213 ok thanks I’ll have to figure how that works
Wise app as well.
I'm a left handed guy... sad 😔
I’m left handed too. I’m NOT changing.
These rules are similar to India.

Number one thing not to do is point at a picture of the king or joke about him.
Well, I’m left handed and I’m not changing. Deal with it! I bet if I hand them money with my left hand they would take it 😀
