After being in real estate for 18 months I didn't realize how similar these career paths were. I'm a nonconformist, I need the kind of work I can have a personality in.
Thank you for this realistic advice!! I’ve been on the fence about pursuing a career in the medical field which feels safe but artistically and my huge interest in hair/beauty and business. Cathleen Marks Hey! Thanks so much! What i would suggest to anyone who wants to become a hairstylist is to work at a salon first before going to school. It is a great way for you to see if the industry is what you are wanting instead of finding out it isn’t after spending the money on school ❤️
@@LaurenFrancesHair that's a good idea. I know girls who studied it and hated it after. I went to school twice before and I tried a trial at a salon and I worked for free they didnt pay

Hey Gaowy! Think of it like a college degree. You aren’t an expert after a year. It takes 4 years to get a bachelors degree and believe me I have one, and you still are no expert after that. But with hair, you can definitley speed up the process my learning marketing and emerging yourself in advanced education. 1 you get a lot better, and two, you will be able to find the things that you excel in and you can capitalize on that. Give yourself a few years of complete dedication to business skill development, and practice and when you are ready to go on your own you will hit the ground running! ❤️

This video is so relatable! After apprenticing for 3 years and going on the floor for the first time as a commission based stylist I was having a hard time surviving because I had no clients lol. I attended advanced training for cutting for 3 months and learned a lot! It’s true if you don’t practice it doesn’t get better. I decided to specialize in colour, but I’m doing more cuts because the salon I work at has more cut clients. I’m just hoping my clientele will grow, because at the end of the day we gotta eat and pay the bills lol.

I am a hair stylist with a one chair salon in my home in a small town. Currently I am the only hair salon in my town. I've had my shop 28 years. As time has rolled along clients have died, moved away and went to live in nursing homes. My skills are good. I stay up on trends and I feel I'm a really good stylist. However....getting new clients is my biggest problem. I have clients that have been with me for over 20 years but it's not enough. I need more. I'm posting on Facebook daily....Instagram, Most people I know are not on Instagram. So I'd really like your opinion because there seems to be no answer to this question for us older stylists. I'm 53. How do we fill our books? I really don't want to move. I enjoy being at home with my salon.
I love this question. ❤️ I totally understand what it must feel like to constantly hear “get a social media” when you know your clientele is probably never going to see anything you post. My advice would be this. Going forward, set a clear goal for who exactly you want as your clients. In a small town, i would try to figure out who are the most influential people in that town. Who are the people that when they speak ,everyone listens. The mayor? Another business owner? Now it is your mission to make that person your client. In all your marketing efforts you are doing it with them in mind. If the person you have in your head couldn’t give two craps about social media, then social media is a waist of your time. You are now a detective and your mission is to figure out what this person spends their time on, and what they pay attention too. If you focus all of your efforts trying to get this one person as your client, you will have the ear of everyone in their circle. Do you see what kind of ripple effect that could have? Lauren ❤️
Hey, I really liked this video I started following you on Instagram. I'm waiting to take this state board exam and due to the shutdown, I'm thinking of starting a home salon thanks for the advice.
How do you actually make more money tho. I mean you can set a goal but idk. U really need a clientele. I’m in a rut now. Hopefully this video will help.
Truther Revolution hey! Good for you for demanding specifics. These are the key factors in my earning more money. Of course it comes down to the fact you have to charge more. And in order to charge more. And in order to be worth more I believe the things I laid out in this video are the reasons I was able to do that! I charged $100/hr for the majority of my services some slightly more. Here is another helpful video for you th-cam.com/video/TMjqVOBTEtI/w-d-xo.html hope you are able to get out of that rut! ❤️
I just moved to the u.s from Europe , been doing hair nearly 20 years. My salon has given me one client in 3 weeks and just told me it’s up to me to get clients , and told me to go out on the streets and offer free haircuts in the hopes they will come back. Where I come from it’s mainly up to the salon to get the clients in , and my job to make them happy and keep coming back to me. I put great work on social media , grab anyone I can to do something cool with and get pics , I just feel so low I don’t know many people here , if I knew I’d be wandering the Streets at 36 offering free hair I never would have come here. What do you think? Xx
sarah This is what I think. Going out and getting your own clients is the best and quickest way to grow. I am not above it and never will be. I think everyone needs to master that skill. However, my thing, is that is one of the most challenging parts of being a hair stylist. Why would I want to do it for someone else? If I’m going to put that kind of effort in, it’s going to be for my business, not another salon. 🤷🏻♀️ UNLESS, I was first starting out and the salon was teaching me how to do it while also supplementing me with giving me some of their own clients. Otherwise I see no benefit in working for a salon. 🤷🏻♀️
I love this video it's very informative. I took hair dressing in high school and I turned the hose on someone by accident so I never finished. I could have become a hair dresser out of high school.

I would assume it would be difficult since they are always very slow, I’m sure it’s even worse with Covid but give it time it will get sorted out!
LOVED this video! Thank you for the insight.
Ashtynn Hart so great to hear that!! Thank you!
What a great video!!! 🙏🏼 thanks sooo much
Pia Bolanos so glad you loved it! Thank you!!
i'm 17 and in a cosmetology class in high school and i don't plan on going to college i just plan on finishing beauty school and getting to work !!! im working as a receptionist at a salon right now and i hope i can reach my goals. is 30k my first year possible???
riley lafrance of course it is. Think of it this way. Instead of spending money on college you are spending your time getting experience so that you can be successful out of the gate. You are already working so that is awesome! Learn everything you can. Chat with the owner. Shadow stylists and offer to help right now! When you graduate Give yourself at least a year of apprenticing first. And make sure you are making the most of your time so that you are prepared to do well when you have your own clients. ❤️ I have a free group for hairstylists you are welcome to join ask questions and get advice ❤️ facebook.com/groups/144485089539993/?ref=share
This was posted a year ago. I’m interested how your first year went?
How did it go? :)
Very cool! Thanks so much for watching!
Really great tips and ideas! Thank you!
Dona Hall thank you for watching ❤️
Yes make another marketing video!
Dona Hall added to the list!✌🏻
Lauren Frances Hair thanks Lauren ill try again , you’re right .. maybe I do feel above it , I’ll try again with a better attitude ❣️
I love this video it's very informative. I took hair dressing in high school and I turned the hose on someone by accident so I never finished. I could have become a hair dresser out of high school.
Cathleen Marks haha that is awesome! Did she deserve it? Lol
Cathleen It's Never Too Late ! You can always go back. Maybe get a grant or something like that. Best Wishes to You 🕊️👍🕊️
This has just convinced me to become a hairdresser!!! Subscribed lol Did you hire anybody like an assistant to help you reach that goal? Or did you reach it single-handedly?
This is awesome! I never had an assistant no ☺️
Thank you so much for this video! I have lots of pictures of before and afters but when it comes to posting them with verbiage I get really overwhelmed. Any suggestions on how to properly write about the photos?
Love your video! Thank you for sharing ♥️
