Had this on VHS back in the day, crazy watching it again. I remember thinking DJ Nike was so wack, most of these DJs were wack honestly. The USA finals always had way better DJs than the Worlds, 1996 USA finals were probably the best.
1997 was such a weird in-between period for DJ battles. The reigning champs (ISP, Noize and them) were done with competing but had brought the level up. But the newer cats hadn't yet mastered all the innovations. I get why A-trak won, since he baffled the jury with new techniques while the other guys were still doing old style DMC sets, but his set gets sloppy pretty quickly, especially the scratching. He knows all the new tricks the Piklz had taught him, but still needed to learn how to implement them tastefully and make it funky. The last 2 sets (Crazy B and Tommy) for instance were way more entertaining and musical.
Sam Houston are you serious? Atrak slayed it and was very musical yet technical at the same time. His set was pretty clean too. Atrak went on to win numerous world titles, DJ’d for Kanye West, started Fools Gold and is still doing his thing in the EDM scene now.
Has to be said... DJ kid from the Philippines is just awful... Looks like he's on something other than the decks too.... and just when you think it can't get any worse he's followed by DJ Nike... The best thing about this year is the move away from letting teams enter. A Trak won by a mile.
My best djs to do this are dj jazzy jeff, cash money, dj magic Mike, dj Mr mixx, mix master Mike, dj jealous j, dj premier, spinbad, Joe cooly, jam master j. sorry but no one on here comes close all the djs on here are just OK nothing special at all but that's just how i feel
