Unboxing Minnesota: What It's Like Living in Minnesota

  • Does everyone in Minnesota own a crock pot? Are there really ten thousand lakes here? And is everyone in Minnesota nice?
We'll answer those questions plus a bunch more eh. So grab that hot dish and your fishing pole - we're gonna unbox the state of Minnesota! K?
This is an ice fisherman. He waits until the lake freezes, then drills a hole and sits around all day and drinks beer. And maybe gets a fish. This is a big deal in Minnesota. Cause there’s not a lot to do around here.
But they're not all ice fishermen in Minnesota. And they aren’t all hockey players, either. There’s a lot of people up here, believe it or not. I mean, statistically, this is the 2nd healthiest state, and the 4th smartest state too.
A lot of people don’t even know where Minnesota is on a map. Anyways, for a better analysis and a map of this state, we need to look at a rundown of the state as a whole, and then drill down into each various region.
This is Minnesota. As you can see, it has a lot going on.
We'll talk about Minneapolis, Duluth, St. Paul, hockey, hot dish, bad weather, snow, ice fishing, the Twins, Timberwolves, Wild, Vikings, the Iron Range and the North Shore.

I'm impressed you knew about the differing lake definitions between MN and WI. Minnesotans have long been a little annoyed that WI claims to have more lakes. Every time it rains in WI the number of lakes goes up since they count every puddle.
Vikings fans are a bit offended that Packers fans hate the Bears more than the Vikes.
As many have mentioned, "eh" is more of a Canadian thing, although it might bleed over a bit in northern MN, kind of like how Canadians love to fill MN with their coins. I think it's safe to say that nearly all Minnesotans have, at some time, tried to buy a "pop" from a vending machine and have it keep rejecting one of the coins... only to find out it's a crappy Canadian quarter (with a hockey player on it).

In regards to 'Minnesota nice', it does have some basis. It is very common in Minnesota that someone will let you go ahead of them in a food line. They will ask 'is that all you have', and if you say yes, they will let you ahead of them. This probably happens 50 percent or more of the time if your waiting in line with just a couple items. Also, there are many things put on the side of a road with a 'free' sign. Some people really do take 'Minnesota nice' to heart. I find it is the polar opposite of Florida where I came from.

Minnesota native here - despite this video being four years old now this is SHOCKINGLY accurate. You got a new subscriber!! Though one thing I've heard is everyone who comes from out of state say that it's really hard to make friends here because everyone sticks to the hometown they grew up with and stays friends with the same friend group from middle/high school.
That *can* be true and I used to be that way, I did stay friends with my same friend group from middle/high school but then I moved away from my hometown of Orono back to Minneapolis and got involved in the roller skating and circus arts community. I made a whole new batch of friends and many of them are out-of-state transplants. So if you want to make friends in Minnesota, you HAVE TO have a hobby that you do regularly to meet people. The good thing is - there is strong community in Minneapolis/Twin Cities and if you get involved in a club or activity you can make REALLY great lasting friendships. And people in Minnesota are extremely welcoming to transplants unlike many other states. Also, we don't say "eh" but the "o" accent is absolutely a thing (listen to a Minnesotan say "coat" or "road" or "boat") and whenever I travel people instantly know I'm from Minnesota even though I don't think my accent is that bad 😅

"Cake Eaters" a phrase coined in 1975 by my HS class. Any ways "Cake Eaters" go into the heated garage attached to the house. Drive to the heated garage beneath the building where their office is. The Twin Cities has a complex network of heated skyways that connects the second floors of buildings. This keeps the cake eaters from ever experiencing the horrors of sub zero temperatures.

I lived in Minnesota for 4 loooong years.
I was dragged there kicking and screaming in my junior year of high school.
My Father was transferred by his corporate masters to Eden Prairie.
It was the worst experience of my life. The summers, however, were great. All three weeks of them.
Otherwise, it was a living hell.
I used to pass the winters by joining the slack jawed snowbillys as we drank too much and stared at a hole in the ice. My Dad bought a Kickass, Yamaha snow machine as an appeasement gesture, but then it didnt really snow for the next two years.
Got the hell out of there in 1990. I can still remember the dirty snowbanks on the side of the road as I drove out of town in APRIL.

Shops in Minneapolis are being robbed in broad daylight. It's become so bad shops that can afford it have hired private security. A lot of companies are leaving the metro area which means jobs. Basically at this point I recommend sticking to places outside the metro such as Stillwater, Duluth and Northfield are some of the best places to go.

The governor is a tyrant, Minneapolis has been utterly laid to waste, not everyone enjoys freezing their asses off and ice fishing is an extremely boring way to freeze... Also for the record there are about 10,000 different varieties of hotdish, and why the hell wouldn’t you have a Crockpot? Everyone should have a Crockpot. They’re essential for your chili cookoff at work, if those ever become a thing again (pending a post-COVID reality).

Well now we do have zero covid-19 cases, so there are some good things after all. But with the snow and weather up here in Saskatchewan, I wanted to hang out somewhere like in California where my sister lived. Seems like heaven...a safe, drug-free, quiet, and peaceful place... especially since your other video said everyone is leaving California...lol

I am a life long resident. I grew up in Saint Paul, but I have lived in south St. Paul, Inver Grove Heights, shoreview, and Woodbury. We are planning on moving to TN. I am over this state. Too liberal, too woke, too cold, and no it isn’t nice here in the summer. It’s tick infested and sweltering. We don’t have four seasons. We have two. Winter and road construction season. The MN dept of transportation will do road project well into December when the snow flies. Our property taxes and income taxes are ludicrous. We have good healthcare and plenty of jobs but i will not miss the 6 inches of snow and driving on ice and sitting indoor 7 months of the year. If you like being fat, you can eat yourself to death at the state fair. Lake Superior is pretty however Duluth is overrated. Lots of homeless bums now populate the area. Of course the state has some great places to visit such as Itasca, Ely, the boundary waters, mall of America, Stillwater, and Longville (home of the turtle races and a deer petting zoo), but once you do all those things-the snow gets old fast. And your employer and schools will expect you to drive in it and risk your life because “it’s Minnesota”. Visit in the summer. Don’t live here.

I have been living in Minnesota my entire life. I can say the only time I've ever heard anyone say "eh" was when I went to Canada. and even then it wasn't till day 4 of my 7 day visit to hear. Nick why are you telling all this information with a condescending tone. As if it was a lower class thing to like hockey and fish, not that I like either. we're not all Lutheran, we don't all like that snow and cold and no one ever says "eh". though I did learn a few new things about this state.

    • @joemiller7082
      @joemiller7082 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

First of all, northern Minnesotans say “eh” all the time. Someone from Bemidji and someone from Winnipeg are virtually indistinguishable. Protestants make up half of the states population, most of which are Lutheran and that’s double any other religion/denomination. We might not all love snow, but we certainly don’t hate it enough to move elsewhere like people who really hate it do. I didn’t hear him say anything really bad about hockey or ice fishing. He’s not wrong on just about everything he said.
