Okay, confused American here. Someone is going to have to explain to me how, on a show _based_ in the UK, presumably surveying people in the UK for their answers, it's not _absolutely_ common knowledge that Ireland is your neighbor via a land border. It's... um... kind of been a consistently heavily-discussed topic for over a century now. 38 points is just... mind-breakingly low to me. Nearly _twice_ as many people surveyed knew Canada bordered the US? Just... HOW???
Probably cuz ireland is on a separate island bordering only northern ireland, and im assuming this show takes place in England so thats why people tend to forget that northern ireland is in the UK and the guests are thinking of coutnries bordering england
Nobody ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the general public.
Also, technically, doesn't the UK also share land borders with Spain (Gibraltar) and Cyprus?
@@chevand8One of those irritating UK technicalities...Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and not part of the UK. Same with the bases on Cyprus...our territory but not part of the UK.
People just forget about Northern Ireland I guess. No need to lose your rag mate
I like how this is one of those instances of "answers accurate at time of recording" two times over, as Canada and Denmark now share a tiny border with each other!
Oh that's right. It's a small island between Greenland and Canada, right?
@eamonahern7495 yeppers! Once perhaps one of the most good-humoured and low stakes border disputes, Canada and Denmark finally came to an agreement either last year or the year before, I believe
Soon to be all one country
@@eamonahern7495 Yes, Hans Island
@@shymike Keep dreaming
I would have argued that the UK has a land border with Spain at Gibraltar and Canada has a land border with Denmark at Hans Island.
Gibraltar is an Overseas Territory of the UK but is not part of the United Kingdom. The agreement to divide Hans Island between Denmark & Canada was finally ratified in December 2023. That episode looks older.
How old is this episode? Because since 2022 Canada has a land border with Denmark as well as the US.
Based on how the hosts look, I think it's nearly 15 years old.
UK - Ireland.
PNG is only a few kilometres from Australia. The island of Saibai is part of the state of Queensland and is one of the islands of the Torres Strait which are proudly Australian.
Valerie is double wrong. Holland isn't a country. It's part of The Netherlands.
And Holland doesn't have any land borders with other countries, as all Dutch borders border provinces that aren't part of Holland.
She would have been given it if it had been a correct answer, since British people call that country after their football team!
@@glenbinnie2086 Football team is called The Netherlands too.
It's Netherlands at the United Nations
But often referred, acceptably, to as both colloquially for the same country. Like America and the U.S.A.
7:30 HOLLAND? Youre guessing that when south korea is still up...
Yes, because if she’d said North Korea she’d have been out as it was too high scoring
@@tomjarrett8290 you don't know what score it'll be, can at least try get one safe instead of randomly guessing wrong
@@tommyalcroft3223 I think most people in her position would assume that North Korea wasn’t safe at all given how obvious it was. I’m amazed it was as low as it was
Its not prudent, even at "time of recording", to list the UK. I understand there is different political terminology, but theres a decent argument for the UK bordering Spain at Gibraltar and Cyprus at their military bases.
Furthermore , the Chunnel is disputedly considered a land border between the UK and France.
Gibraltar and the military bases in Cyprus are officially not a part of the UK, but are British overseas territories instead. It's obviously technicalities, but purely officially (and this show has to go by that), neither are land borders of the UK.
The Channel Tunnel (small personal irk, I can't stand the term "Chunnel", thankfully I rarely come across it), is indisputably not a land border. Neither is the crossing between Denmark & Sweden.
Dont the uk also share a land border with spain via gibarlter?
No, Gibraltar has never officially been part of the UK. It's an overseas territory. It doesn't take part in UK general elections. Nor do the channel islands.
@rp1692 i think gibralter may do in general elections.... french guyana counts as france but thats a overseas terrioty...or is this different?
@@samrabey89 Gibraltarians never vote in UK general elections, but they did get a vote in the 2016 Brexit referendum, because they were covered by the UK's membership of the EU, despite not officially being part of the UK.
The way France does things is different, their overseas territories tend to be integrated into France to a greater degree compared with the UK's.
@rp1692 thanks for the explantion
@@rp1692french Guyana is a french département with the same rights and duties than departments in mainland France, like Martinique, Guadeloupe, La Reunion and Mayotte. And they are in the EU too !
The UK doesn't belong on this list. They also border Spain at Gibraltar.
Canada also borders Denmark.
I think it is classed as an oversees territory and not part of the country itself. Because Brunei borders Malaysia on Borneo, an island separated from most of Malaysia but still part of the actual country.
@@hodge1239Actually the part of Malaysia that is on Borneo IS most of Malaysia (by land area at least), although it has only 2 of the states and a fraction of the population.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. It is not part of the UK.
@@juliansmith4295This episode predates the 2022 agreement that created the Canada/Denmark border
38? How?! What is wrong with the UK?
brexiteers :)
Actually Papua New Guinea is about 5 kilometres from Australia. The Torres Strait Islands elected to become Australian
which means that they're not part of PNG then...
@ Yes that is the point. The closest island is 4 kilometres to PNG, and its inhabitants are Australian . So you could ague Australia is not 150 kms south of PNG (as Richard said) but 4 kms south. However for international law the border is halfway between the countries.
@@brontewcat ahhh sorry. I get what you mean, now.
Canada also has a land border with Greenland.
Not when it was filmed it didn’t.
Nerd time here. Technically, the UK has two land borders. Ireland, yes. And France. As defined in the1986 Treaty of Canterbury, and with the creation of the channel tunnel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Canterbury_(1986)
I think you'd have more of an argument with Gibraltar and Spain
On that basis also - if bridges count - Denmark has a land border with Sweden (as well as Canada - though that's more recent - Hans Island).
5:14 I knew all of them
would have left with 6 points, very nice 😁 i knew everyone of these except monaco which i thought bordered italy
Monaco is very close to Italy, only 10 km from Monaco to Italy. There used to be a land border in the past, but France gained the land between Monaco and Italy.
@ yeah i checked later that it was close! maybe that's where my confusion stemmed from hahaha
Although Northern Ireland is part of the UK, it's not actually bordered to the rest of the UK by land. You have to either travel to and from by air or sea.
Same applies to USA/Canada if you start from Hawaii
That doesn't in any way invalidate the question or answer given though. The point is that NI (part of the UK) has a land border with the Republic of Ireland (also known as Ireland), and therefore the UK has a land border with Ireland.
Thank you for pointing that out. It didn't even cross my mind. I stand corrected. 👍👍😁😁
🇧🇳 is with 🇲🇾
How old is this? Canada also borders Denmark (Greenland).
Not a land border though?
@@nitram6700 I'm Canadian, and yes we have a land border with Greenland.
If I were to throw marine borders in there, we're 10 kilometres from France.
@@nitram6700Hans Island was formally settled in 2022 (23?) giving a formal land border between Greenland/Denmark and Canada and putting an end to the Whiskey War.
It’s definitely older than the Hans Island agreement, the cohost in the video hasn’t been cohost for a few years now
@@juliansmith4295Where is the land border with Greenland? I was sure there wasn't one and I've looked on Google maps and can't find one. I'm always up for learning something new though.
They still say British Isles .
The British Isles is a geographical entity.
Amazed how few people knew the border with South Korea.
Even if you'd never heard of South Korea, you should be able to guess!
Give it a few years & there will a different answer to the UK question!!
Ireland shares a border with Ulster, UK.
Ulster is one of the historic provinces of the island of Ireland.
Northern Ireland consists of only six of the nine counties of Ulster.
So, although we might sometimes refer to Northern Ireland as "Ulster" or "the province", this isn't correct, strictly speaking.
But you're right about the main point, which is that Ireland (the official short name for the Republic of Ireland) has a land border with the UK.
The 100 people are brainless. Just shockingly ignorant.
They should spend time educating themselves, instead of answering questions for Pointless.
I never cease to be amazed by how uneducated people are.
I very much doubt it's always the same 100 people. That would be absurd.
When their ignorance is pointed out , they simply giggle .
I knew all of them. Pretty easy
Never even heard of northern island
Part of New Zealand.
The United States 🇺🇸 definitely borders the UK 🇬🇧 .
The JFK memorial on Runnymede
No. 😊
There's a small piece of land in America where some British WWII soldiers graves are that is given to the UK so the soldiers are "home".
Correct me if I'm wrong.
@@americanswanIf you count that as a border then every embassy is a border.
@@mikeadams5305That's a common misconception. That area of land is owned by the US government just like any business owns a shop floor for example, but the land is sovereign British territory.
Technically Northern Ireland has a land border with the republic because it's not in the UK. United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland is the correct term for the UK.
Northern Ireland IS in the UK. People sometimes misunderstand how to parse "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". It's "United Kingdom of [Great Britain and Northern Ireland]". Not "[United Kingdom of Great Britain] and Northern Ireland".
Clueless woman... saying Denmark was bordered by Holland.
Wrong for 2 reasons. They don't border, and that's not the recognised name of that country.
@NickZ-b2oNorth Korea would not have gotten her through
I find that people are generally either very interested in geography and know quite a lot about the world, or not at all interested and know virtually nothing.
A lot of that shows up on TV quiz shows, especially on Pointless!
@NickZ-b2oNorth Korea wouldn't have gotten them through and even if it would have she would probably have expected it to score higher
I sell different currencies and you'd be surprised how many people ask for Dutch money when in fact they want Danish Krones
Why do men go on quiz shows with women??? 🤦♂️
actually several countries share a land border with the UK - including Ireland [NI-Ireland] (sorta disputed by some Irish nationalists but certainly de facto exists), Spain [Gibraltar-mainland Spain] (sorta disputed by some in Spain but de facto exists), Cyprus [sovereign military bases], and France [Channel Tunnel]. I’m excluding embassies, all other military bases like US airbases, UN buildings, bufferzones, etc. also excluding Antarctic claims which the Antarctic Treaty invalidates
Gibraltar and the Sovereign Bases on Cyprus are British territories but are not part of the UK. I suppose you can argue that there's a land border with France in the Tunnel but that's disputed.
The Irish border doesn't defacto exist. It 100% definitely exists. Even if you think Ireland should be united, the border does currently exist.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. It is not the UK. Same with the small British territory on Cyprus.
There is absolutely not a land border between the UK and France.
None of those places are in the UK.
And a tunnel does not constitute a land border.
