I was in my 50s when I went to England, stay in Horley, for two weeks every day I went to London Victoria on the train. I made a video while leaving London Victoria all the way to Horley while the train was moving. To this day I still play it. When I came back home from England, everyday I used to imitate the voice on the train. We are now approaching Clapham Junction and the one that says please mind the gap between the train and the platform. Looking at these videos I relive the time I spent for the two weeks. I just love it.
Myself and another driver were released from driving duties back in the eighties as cameraman and recordist and were seconded to a film company to make route and other railway training films under a remit from the then BRB. We had an old directors saloon coach at our disposal of around 1935 vintage which was propelled by a diesel loco for the route stuff. A lot of the films are on youtube and although the films look a little dated now are worth watching for some of the archive content.
+isdraken Productions .Sweden (isdraken) Yes it works surprisingly well but I always thought how dangerous it is for wild animals & stray humans (750 V DC). It would be very expensive to change to overhead & problematic in the low tunnels so it it will probably never change or not in the forseeable future. The class 442 has a design top cruising speed of 100 MPH & ultimate top speed of around 115 MPH I believe. I don't know what the line speed between Gatwick & London is (probably 90 MPH). Most interesting for me was the old Gatwick Express that had a permament formation of an electric locomotive at one end (class 73 with stand by Diesel engine which was useful when traversing large gaps in the conductor rail e.g at points / crossings), a rake of unpowered BR mark 2 air conditioned coaches (second hand from elsehwere in the country) and a powered GLV at the other end (class 489 itself converted from the motor coach of the class 414 EMU - Electric Multiple Unit). The configuration was a good example of how British Rail used to do a good job with very little money before privatisation. www.kentrail.org.uk/Class%2073.htm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_489 Remember also that Eurostar worked on 3rd rail when it at first used to come into London Waterloo.
Nice ride and good to see the station names but i would have thought the gatwick express would have its own tracks and not get snarled up in speed restrictions caused by dodgy points and slow commuter trains. I certainly wouldnt pay extra to use it.
I didnt know you guys in that part of the country had 3rd rail. Why such a problem to electrify the london to bristol line? Cos they wanna use overhead electification due to it being safer.
+Tim Daugherty There aren't any. If you look at 4:00, the camera is towards the right side of the train. It makes it look like there's 5/6 rails, whereas, in reality, there's only 3 that the train is actually riding on.
The people above are incorrect I think, the rails are third rails that hold electricity to power certain EMU's. they have a purpose, and I was confused by them at first too.

The great class 442 train, used to love these trains when they ran on the London Waterloo to Weymouth Line . Lovely and spacious.
I like to watch these videos to see how accurate they get these routes on Train Sim World.. Pretty damn accurate. Good video 👍🏻
I played it at 1.5 speed and did the whole journey in 20 mins. All seemed perfectly doable. I may write in to Thameslink and suggest it.
EASYTIGER10 it’s worth a try! 👍
As in a sort of Thameslink express service connecting Gatwick Airport to St Pancras?
Best comment on the internet!
might be outta budget but worth a try
@@denelson83 you mean... thameslink...
When I was a boy I used to watch the trains on the lattice bridge at Horley for ages
A most enjoyable trip! We know that route well, but not from the driver's view - Cheers. Dafydd, Daniel and family, Sutton, Surrey.
When my grandparents were alive I did this twice a year ! From myrtle beach, SC to gatwick!
Oh London.....how I miss you! Love the video.
you left london?
Thanks for up loading I'm going on this train soon so it held a lot to c where I need to go
Very good video. Excellently sharp.
Excellent!
Thanks for posting. 👍
Enjoyed the journey ,THANKS MATT
Always love the Quarry Line route bypassing Redhill. Looking forward to the Brighton Belle going on this route again.
I got to say, your Train Simulator graphics are amazing! ;)

+Chuckles whats the channel name?
I just love how the train just suddenly appears at 30:33!!!
Magic!
Super excellent very interesting & exciting
442s are impressive with the 40-50 year engines... love em
Age is not a problem for electrical engines. The only stuff that wears off can be replaced again and again.
Old REP motors!
Thanks Matt for sharing! Very interesting...
27:30 🎼'And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown'
great video, thanks for sharing!
Loved it. Amazing to watch.
I especially liked the part where the plastic dolly from outer space ran across the tracks at Clapham Junction. 👽👽🌕😀🌙🌛🌜🌝🏃⭐🌟🌠🐸🐸🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃
great, thank you
I love train rides 🚂
I have to say, the 442s will be well missed, although the audio in this video is a little choppy ;)
London Victoria looks like a more functional version of New York's Penn Station (NYP).
The video was great. Unfortunately the audio popped continuously so in the end I couldn't watch it. :(
The Tid I turn the audio off/down anyway. I have no fascination for the drone of motors or the ding of bells.
Спасибо!
Can you do more of these cab rides please
No
This line passes two of my favourite junctions; Stoats Nest Junction and Pouparts Junction.
Great names! The second apparently named after one Samuel Poupart (1807-1875). What a name to have to go through life with. Bummer.
So Gatwick Express are driver only then? I must say that's a surprise.
What's with all the honking at 3:52?
AndreiTupolev I think there's a kid on the bridge above watching the train pass
Kids on bridge
yes
thats me and my granddaughter on the bridge.
Lucky!
Great video
This might actually have been good had it not been for the poor sound quality
Are you for real? This is great, what do you want, the soundtrack to Frozen?
Awesome video dude, well done. :)
I suspect there’ll be a few claims for industrial deafness from drivers of those units. The wind blast sound is shocking.
Good Video, Thanks!
beautiful
Great Ride
I thought they had dropped the "third rail" system. Impressed.

+isdraken Productions .Sweden (isdraken) Third rail will live on for a good few years yet. However any new electrification will be OHLE.
Nice!
Cheers.
I'm on a train in England 😊😊😊😊😉😉😉
This is technicaly not a driver's eye view, it is a cab view
Becuse you are not seeing what the driver sees
Where's the driver then ? Back of the train ?
Trains always consumed me as a child. Just a shame the sound on this video is distorted. Otherwise, love these "birds eye view" of this train routes.
nice train

what was happening at 20:37
I didnt know you guys in that part of the country had 3rd rail.
Why such a problem to electrify the london to bristol line? Cos they wanna use overhead electification due to it being safer.
Did you see the ghost train appear at 30:35
33stevelinda it was a train that was coming out of the station and the editing made it look like a ghost train
it is possible to see the speed on screen?
Agree with other comments - video great, sadly the sound not so.
And the driver legged it at the end. Was it something we said? :D
Probably desperate to take a leak.. 🤔 🤔 Lol
The audio is broken but clears up when the train goes through tunnels! Go figure!
Probably wind entering the car; the tunnels have no clearance.
ماشاالله ماشاالله ماشاالله ماشاالله
Nice vid, shame it's not quite central over the track but hey ho, still good.
There is no central window on the 442. To have the camera centered would have meant attaching it to the outside of the train.
Ah, haha. Ok.
I've made this journey hundreds of times going back to the earlier EMUs then the 73s on the Gatwick Express.
Gatport Airwick as my dad calls it camera mic cant handle low tones.
😄😄😄😄😄👍
They should get it electrified to 25kV as it will save a lot of energy and will also give higher speed!
That's quiet a big crack on the rail at 29:04 also is that bi-lingual train announcements
Looks like an expansion joint to me
:-( I miss it there.
Yes
Why all the random rails in the middle of the mainlines?
+Tim Daugherty There aren't any. If you look at 4:00, the camera is towards the right side of the train. It makes it look like there's 5/6 rails, whereas, in reality, there's only 3 that the train is actually riding on.
+Tim Daugherty They are often rails that have been replaced or ones to replace the current ones
The people above are incorrect I think, the rails are third rails that hold electricity to power certain EMU's. they have a purpose, and I was confused by them at first too.
+Thomas Mahoney Also confirmed by the absence of overhead wires.
Thomas Mahoney Didn't reply earlier, but yes. They're called the 3rd rail system, used mainly in the South of England!
01:50 : what the letters RA stand for?
Right Away. Meaning the train is cleared to depart
@@TrainPlaneHub OK. thank you so much.
Yes yes
always wondered what the maximum operating speed these 442' s go?? 60? 70?
+Jos Anoia' They're capable of 100mph. Think maximum speed on this route though is 90.
Cool!
+rachaelmatt I think they're capable of 108!
00MentoFan Might be capable of it. But all trains using third rail can do no faster than 100mph.
rachaelmatt I know :P Shame, really
Good vid but audio sucks...
Very enjoyable, but the sound quality needs attention.
Not much I can do about it now after 5 years I’m afraid
@@TrainPlaneHub Sure I understand. Keep them coming. Always enjoyable. Just travelled that route last week, and boy was it hot.
Review tonight
What's wrong with the sound? Shame really kinda ruins the experience.
Ghost train at 30.56 😊
Andrew Rigsby 30:56
Thank you. Not sure how to get the time stamps
APPROACH TO CITY CENTER 27:00.
Faulty soundtrack

Very bad sound recording
Terrible recorded sound at speed !!
+Colin Wood It's quite hard to do in a cab.
Colin Wood
And yet the sound is OK in the tunnels and cuttings
Needs a faster train to have video's and the sound is dreadful.
VIDEO GREAT, SORRY BUT SOUND CRAP !!
very bad soundtrack quite a shame poor indeed
