Awesome truck. Love it. Back in the eighties I drove a GMC General with a 318, 13 speed tri-axle dump. The guys in the quarry would call me the bus driver. 👍

Them 3408s rated at 450 I believe but truckers and myself… who also owns one, say it pushes 550 or more horses.
When I got mine started and ran as was before I rebuilt it, it still had some balls.

Early Chevy small blocks had a canister oil filter that had a gasket like that one.. Common problem was double gasketing ....

I could hear the difference after fuel pressure was higher. You snapped it and I thought “that sounds like a Cat”, right when you said it was way snappier.
When I first got my 7.3 it seemed doggy. I checked my pissys and and gauge showed 10. Thought no way, this thing wouldn’t run and drive with 10 pissys. Must be bad gauge, because I just replaced fuel pump. New gauge still 10 pissys. Crap. New fuel pump (1997 mechanical). And now 40 pissys. Put a bb in and 60 pissys. Happy…. :)

I dig the 3408, she's ruff and will take a lot of polishing to rub the wrinkles out of that old turd, but it is a very cool piece.

Them 3208’s got a low and slow freight train like idle. Love it. And as a former auto/diesel/industrial mechanic, I know your pains. Especially cursing the various engineers of said shit designed things.

If it sits for a while I’ll prime it a little especially when it’s colder outside just for badassery I like to put the boot down all the way on the fuel pedal let her suck that juice and roll coal it redlines… maybe for like 3 seconds then I let it idle and she sounds mint

5 psi minimum fuel pressure to start and 33+/-5psi at full load according to the Cat manual for an 834B rubber tire dozer I have at work that runs a 3408.

Watching your videos and a few others on here gave me the confidence to guy buy a 81 k100 that had been setting for 13 years. Iam a mechanic but on ag equipment and I’ve never done anything to a truck. Got her to the shop tonight and got it fired up. It’s awesome. Thanks.

Man I was cringing as you were backing out that drain plug to check for water and then I couldn’t believe it when you almost lost it…reminded me of my first time changing oil on a C15, had the drain pan all lined up but the oil came sideways all over me…

Those hand priming pumps can cause issues as well. Had the one on my 3406B have a check valve come loose in the bore and restrict the fuel, and even shut it off. Guess it's a thing. They can also get restricted if they get crap in them. Don't know if that's part of your problem, but it was for me.

Was a Cool looking Pete 359 semi truck back in the days.
If I was seeing it right it looks similar to a thing I bought (but never used) that’s supposed to be a damper to keep the fuel pressure gauge from fluttering. I probably won’t use the one I’ve got if that’s what it is and you need one.

You know what else was ignorant with those Pete conventionals with the V8 Cats? The mechanical tack drive seals would let go and you would be going down the road (esp in the winter), and the cab would be reeking of hot diesel fumes right at the beginning of your must delivery trip on Sunday night. Ask me how I know, 10-4? In all seriousness, they are a reliable engine, except for the way they offset cut the crank so they could make the block narrow enough to fit between truck frame rails. Shes going to be a good mate to the v12 CO. Bill
YES! I hate those fricken buzzer's!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 2005 Freightliner Century brake buzzer goes off when I touch my clutch and the brakes are not released yet. Drives me nuts...
Truck surely has the look, even though it doesn't have the same heartbeat of the rest of the fleet maybe you should continue fixing it 😊cant wait for everyone to see how well the seat mount came out ❤

That toadstool looking thing is a fuel damper, normal fuel psi is 30 at idle no more than 45 at hi idle

Like ten sets of fingernails down a chalk board. Those old cat motors are good for the first key growl up like this one did this time. That's such a cool Engine as well. :-)😎👍👍 the rubber in the fuel line primer gets all disolved and or hard and turns into a big old skid mark after a while [won't work when it gets like that, nope] lol I could listen to you cus this old gear out forever lmao Also, the episodes when you get both you and Mr. Bacon just painting the walls with the cuss outs... love that. Hey, ever going to do a walk around of his painted rig now that it's been to the shows and all? Love to see this long nose rig painted up as well. Such a cool rig. The draft effect?? Is that what its called when you put something under vacuum and then suddenly uncap the system and air rushes in? Some sh!t like that. A few coolant evac/fill systems I've used utilize that method to get everything out of all the little pockets of a coolant system. Seems like it works pretty welll on fuel systems to eh Wayne-O?! lol

That thing is a buffer that you can run without. 40 is max on the fuel pressure anymore and it will bleed fuel past the seals and into the crankcase.
Buffer is correct. The diaphragm must be torn. It supposed to smooth out the pulsation from the gear pump.
Some time the had primer can go bad will not build pressure up

when you pulled your hand held vacuum pump when priming the filter on the frame and sounds like it sucked fuel back to the tank the sound you dont want hear like you said, i wonder if the fuel tanks breath freely if not its just creating vacuum in the tank and takes fuel pressure away and any small leak its more hand priming at start up

When im doing that kinda shit.. think i have fuel issues.. ill bypass all shit. Make sure runs good. Then work way back..lines. filters and all.. those old filter housing like that r and have always beena nightmare.. why most people change shit out..
