Outstanding. Hard to believe that this article was for children's television! David Purley- PROPER bloke- ex Para, George Medal recipient. Tragic to think he lost his life in 1985 doing aerobatics- great bloke, down to earth, no ego on display.
My Dad and I went to Monaco on a Page and Moy racing package in 1973, David Purley was in our group and ordered wine for our table in French every night. He never mentioned that he was making his GP debut that Sunday, someone at the table mentioned he was racing F3! Charming as can be Purley seemed actually interested when I told him of my racing plans! Then a few weeks later there was the Dutch GP.....
Wow! Never saw this before. No BS, just straight forward reportage; that made for a very exciting and entertaining insight into high level motorsport. No egos on display either. Thank you for sharing and reminding us what a great guy John was too.
Thanks for this real period piece. If my memory serves, the "next race in 3 days time" was the Race Of Champions at Brands Hatch. I was there. Purley's Chevron sounded great with its V6 howl amongst the V8s. Wikipedia reminds me that race was won by Tom Pryce, another of the great talents of this era who never quite made it before his untimely death.
Sorry but that is incorrect. The F5000 race at Oulton Park was on Good Friday 28th March 1975 but the Race of champions was on The 16th March 1975. The only Formula 1 race won by a Welsh driver. The Race in question was the next round of the championship held on Bank Holiday Monday at Brands Hatch which was won by David Purley.
i know im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Randy Brandon thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Just stunning and awesome...what a wonderful time, the 70s, the last decade of pure motorsport - very impressed by David Purley as a sportsman and gentleman. The same applies to the whole stuff and team. Extraordinary camera work for this time. Impressive.
The track was actually cleared that morning by the marshalls and other volunteers lapping for about 2 hours to create a clear line, gradually spreading it to a clear track. It wasn't the first time snow disrupted the Good Friday meeting.
BRILLIANT ! I can remember watching this episode of Go With Noakes, and I remember being at that very cold meeting at near by Oulton too, happy days ! Cheer's Andy ! :-)
David Purley was a pure professional and also very blunt with his words. Possibly through years of brutal experience can create such a professional. He always cared for his team and the people he trained. He knew death was a possibility for everyone behind the wheel but he damn well enough tried to prevent that from ever happening again to him.
Superb. Still relevant as a documentary about what motor racing is about. David Purley, Mike Earle, John Noakes and the Chevron built Lec. Gordon Spice, Guy Edwards, Tom Belso and Mike Walker also get a look in. I suspect that Noakes could have made a useful driver - seems to have the talent, understanding and the temperament...........
Its actually Dave Walker, the former Lotus F1 driver and twice British F3 champion. After a couple of serious public road car accidents in 1973 after possibly frustration at losing his Formula One drive, Dave Walker, who was driving here with very substantial permanent physical damage from accidents is having a last go at serious motor racing and actually was one of the quickest F5000 driver in the first half dozen races he competed in before retiring. There were three different unrelated walkers in F5000 at this time Dave (aus) Mike 9GB) and another Australian , Johnny Walker a South Aus, Hero.
David Purley, definitely my definition of a racing driver. This took me back to being a little kid back in the early 70's and going to watch my Uncle Brian race his Cooper S. Not a care in the world 😊
This was one of a small number of F5000 cars using the 3.4 litre Cosworth GAA engines in this class. The US F5000 championship would not accept this engine because they said it wasn't a 'production' unit. More likely they were afraid the agricultural (cheaper) Chevy would be outclassed.
The Cosworth GAA engine was only allowed into British/European F5000 because Ford-Great Britain were pissed off with a major racing catagory being dominated by a General Motors engine and 'lent' on the RAC to approve it.
Sorry Your wronge Lec did make the f1 cars at the back of the factory, however the 1972 car was a march 731 which was race prepared at the lec factory. The 1977 RP1 Lec was made by Lec solely and designed by Mike Pilbeam. Mind you you are right to say the Formula 5000 are made by chevron and just sponsored by Lec.
Top job ! Thanks for sharing. I'm sure John Noakes did a Blue Peter Special and drove a Shellsport F5000 Lola in a race a couple of years before this, or have I gone completely senile ?

The man is an undisputed hero.

A gentleman's gentleman, a friend's friend and a great hero. By all means a real champion without a crown. God bless.
RIP John. Hard to imagine that we would show anything so detailed for children today.

@Randy Brandon It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass :D
@Fabian Terrence Glad I could help xD
What a nice bloke. Heroic/tragic story but a life well-lived.

This is priceless children’s television! Wonderful time......
David Purley, legend and hero.
David Purley - my favourite Formula One driver of all time.
Thank you for posting this.

"A real fast wheel change can win a race. We managed it in just under a minute."
Brilliant video, cheers for sharing!
What a great video.
Fantastic. John Noakes was some man. Fair play to Purley for treating him with genuine respect.
The track was actually cleared that morning by the marshalls and other volunteers lapping for about 2 hours to create a clear line, gradually spreading it to a clear track. It wasn't the first time snow disrupted the Good Friday meeting.
Ah David Purley a true hero in so many ways
Must have been bloody freezing working on those cars. Very tough men.
BRILLIANT ! I can remember watching this episode of Go With Noakes, and I remember being at that very cold meeting at near by Oulton too, happy days ! Cheer's Andy ! :-)
I was at that Gold Cup meeting in 1975,it all seems very primitive in hindsight.
I was there! Freezing and between fosters and clay hill. Never knew this existed or that John Noakes was there...
Great stuff. A lot of well known names in that race too.
David Purley was a pure professional and also very blunt with his words. Possibly through years of brutal experience can create such a professional. the brilliant John Noakes. Absolute master of presenting!
Thanks for sharing this - it's so good.
RIP John Noakes
Very interesting thank you.
Love the use of a hammer on the wheel spanner!

Love the idea that a fridge manufacturer makes cars

Per me è stato un pilota molto sottovalutato, lasua storia mi ha sempre affascinato sin da bambino.
Ciao grande uomo da un tuo fans italiano
thx for sharing - brilliant
Noakes looks like a teenager here although he was about 40 already and 10 years older than Purley.
Top job ! Thanks for sharing.

many many tkxs
Great stuff Andy...can I get a copy of this on disc please?

Wow, heliocppter camera in a semipro race. 20:53
Gordon Spice - legend!
Wasn't Ian Hilton with Brabham?
Makeshift inters, ah those were the days.

Check David Purleys crashed car out at Donington museum, proper he-man!
Mega
911 was a nice suprise.
20:25 and 21:13
1975 and these guys are STILL Using knock-offs..!!!???
Why.?
Funny amateurish racing. It had the same glamour like the Formula Eastern (F3) races in Soviet Union.
