    Would you recommend having one on freshwater lakes?

    • @BobBroeking
      @BobBroeking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I would recommend having on any body of water. For large lakes it would allow you to talk to other boats and marinas if you needed assistance…. For small private lakes perhaps not so useful as you have to have people in the other end of the radio waves …. Most all boats carry a marine radio and most all marinas monitor channel 9. Hope this helps… Thanks for watching ! Bob

    What is the range?

    • @BobBroeking
      @BobBroeking  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on conditions but over open water 5-10 miles at 6W. On the one clip where I was listening to the distress call on the Harris Chain of Lakes that was happening in the Gulf some 30 miles away but I do not know where the antenna was.... Thanks for watching....

    • @BobBroeking

      11-hour Operating Time with 1800mAh high capacity Li-ion battery. But days if you have it on and are just monitoring the frequencies. Thanks for watching!

    I have a baofeng uv9r (water proof). The thing i dont understad is how to get anyone on the radio. At home i hear no one.. my radio is VHF/UHF. Are those the frequencies i need for the water? Or do i need a different radio? Just want to be safe with the family.

    • @BobBroeking
      @BobBroeking  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching….there are specific frequencies dedicated to marine needs so you would need those frequencies and see if your radio covers them and has the ability to receive and transmit. I’ll look it up also and see if my baofeng works. The easiest was is to get a marine specific radio. Bob

    • @BobBroeking
      @BobBroeking  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      OK I tested it and googled the marine frequencies and I WAS able to transmit and receive on those frequencies with my baofeng. So you COULD add those frequencies to your baofeng but I add one caution. Make sure you label them correctly so you are not using channel 16 (Distress) unless it is an emergency. Google is your friend for the frequencies... programming your radio with proper labels is key. The main channels you need are 9, 16 and the ship to ship channels in the 70's. While your radio may be waterproof remember it will not float like a marine radio and if you drop it in the water; your rescue link may be gone!

    Hi Bob these are some good life saving tips. In the Netherlands a marine radio and an operate certificate are mandatory for all larger lakes, the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. And for others waters where the mobile phone is still available, we have an app. on the mobile phone, in which you can ask the rescue stations to follow your sailing trip, and if you do not want that, you can use an emergency button in the app. and they go on their way to your "salvation" or request for help.

    • @BobBroeking
      @BobBroeking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you have mentioned that app... great search and rescue support provided by your country but I suspect the stakes are a bit higher in the North Sea and other places you ride. I also carry a ACR PLB on my vest for world wide rescue in a crisis. Thanks for watching and commenting! Bob

    Thanks for the video. Do you pay monthly for the red gps that you pull out? Also, would that apply to fresh such as lake or just to the ocean.

    • @BobBroeking
      @BobBroeking  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The radio has a built in GPS that is no extra charge. The MMSI # I reference cost a one time fee of $25 to register your vessel. The DSC (Digital Selective Calling) is also built into the radio and has no fee. Hitting the distress button is what I think you are referring to sends your distress signal and location out to any vessel within radio range who is also equipped with DSC and also the Coast Guard. It is more practical for open water situations like the Gulf or ocean although on larger lakes with large modern boats many have DSC built into their on board radios as well and may help. Smaller lakes I do not think it would be much use. I would use the radio to contact other boats for assistance using voice. There is no fee for hitting the distress button. Hope this helps.
