I thoroughly enjoy watching all the videos they're putting out over there. They're so easy to watch, but I always gain something from them. Awesome content.

Thank you for this! The one thing that drives me nuts is when people recommend safes that have those tubular locks on them that can easily be picked opened. Personally, I like the Vaultek 20 safe WITHOUT the Bluetooth and biometric options. I keep one key on me and the spare key in a safety deposit box at a bank.

VLine is the best. Simplex locks are the way to go; no power needed, you can’t lose the key and it works every time, unlike biometric. Their ‘Brute’ model is well named.

If you do not have kiddos, those old brief cases you used to take to work or find at Good Will, make great secure (not hard) storage for pistols. I used foam inserts and fit 2 pistols with 3 extra mags each, a multi tool, a mag-lula and 2 Tupperware containers for ammo. In the folder section I have targets, spare ears, tape measure, masking tape and markers. I made two. They lock and can be put away when company comes or in the big safe when away. Just great grab and go for the range as well. When home my 442 is always near if not in my pocket. I got the foam at Rockler.

is there a difference between the no name brand safe at Harbor Freight and the name brands? what is the difference?

I'd imagine that just depends on the specific safe you're referring to. I'd suggest looking up comparison videos either for the specific safes, or their specific locking systems.

I have no kids in my house. I own two Hornady keyed gun boxes. Both are cabled to the corner post in the room in which they are located. I work from home so I've decided this is enough protection for me and my guests. YMMV.

I would recommend looking at a channel called the Lockpickinglawyer. His criteria for a good gunsafe is one that will keep out a curious teengager. He opens a large number of gunsafes and gun locks using what he calls "low level attacks". By which he means low skill level. Then there's just plain brute force, "how easy will it be to pry open with a large screwdriver? He certainly shows you which safes to avoid.

The newer fingerprint or vain patern recognition quick access safes are cool an all, however it's hard to pass up a good old mechanical lock like the simplex. It works well and has very few downsides.
I personally have a Vaultek Barikade because it was the only decent option I could find on short notice when I bought it. I wanted something with a simplex but it wasn't meant to be. An of course it was for the same reason you have a travel safe, the kiddos. Which isn't a concern for me at home just yet. However my lady's parents just got a new house and now they host people all the time, including families with kids. So I wanted something to restrict access to my lady and I. Prior to this it wasn't a concern. They used to live in a tiny house and never had guests over. So I kept my guns in my Vertx bag in the guest room when visiting.
I also never needed one at home because I rarely have guests over and none of my friends have kids. So I lock up my guns when I leave and unlock my safe when I get home. I also drag a pistol from room to room with me because reasons.
Either way I work at a gun store and it always amazes me how many people don't consider securing their firearms. Especially new gun owners. I get people buying their first gun all the time who look at cheap shotguns like the Maverick 88. But they often don't consider security, even if they have kids. A shotgun may be cheap and easier to aim and shoot accurately. However a good safe will cost way more for that cheap shotgun. Pistols may not be the most effective tools but they are far easier to secure snd transport.
Personally I blame the demonization of firearms in the media and politics. (An to a lesser extent the glorification of firearms in music, games, and movies.) Which lead many schools to stop teaching things like marksmanship, hunters safety, and firearms safety. As a result people who don't grow up around guns (an only know what they've seen or heard in popular culture) often don't consider things like securing access, keeping ammo as far away as possible while cleaning, or even basic range/firearms safety. All of which leads to deaths that could easily be prevented with some actual common since gun education. Instead we get common since gun control... smh. OK... off my soapbox now.
Either way great video. I always enjoy how you cut through the nonsense and get to the point clearly and concisely. You and Luckygunner are some of my favorite presenters in that regard. Even if I can't stand shotguns for home defense. 😋

Choosing to be responsible with our tools has nothing to do with politics.
Unauthorized users get their hands on firearms that they never should have been able to all of the time, and that fuels the fire for those who do want to remove our rights to own firearms. Not talking about safe storage, safe handling (etc), only hurts the 2A community.

@@tessahbooth All this is not needed when you bring up kids properly and put criminals in jail... Bandaids don't heal bullet wounds... It's not the guns...

@@kencaz Small children don't have fully developed brains. Even with a proper upbringing accidents can happen. Hell my parents never really locked up their guns and when they weren't home sometimes I'd wind that shit up as Clint Smith would say.
Ever heard the phrase an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Well that definitely applies here.
I mean just a for instance, what if a person who has never committed a crime decides to brake in your home because he's down and out. He was law abiding. But now he's desperate. Desperate and, thanks to you, armed.
See where I'm going. Life isn't so black and white. We can't control everything and everyone. That's why we have guns in the first place isn't it.

    • @tessahbooth
      @tessahbooth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@kencaz Kiddos are unauthorized users until a certain age/maturity level regardless of upbringing, and regardless of upbringing good kids/teens/young adults can still struggle with mental illness. We can put criminals in jail, but crime will always be a thing.
Nobody said it was the guns fault. The reason we lock up guns is not because guns are bad, but because people are broken, whether their curious kiddo hands, a mind that doesn't see a way out of the current situation, or sticky fingers. We can greatly mitigate these negative outcomes by simply locking them up. None of this is about politics or parenting techniques.

    • @project86xero

@@tessahbooth True that. It's the same for all locks generally. All they do is keep honest people honest. We like to think of humanity as being all civilized. However in reality we've all only a few steps away from chaos. Just a few weeks of no income or empty grocery store shelves can make even the most rational and mild mannered people into crazed lunatics. It's human nature. For better or for worse it's always there and it's always a struggle.
