    You can disable precision mode between the long waypoints, that will save you some of that thruster fire.

    The crazy thruster behavior might be because you still have it in precision mode. It's trying to maintain the shuttle directly on the line between the waypoints instead of letting it drift just a little. Try setting the approach waypoints to toggling the precision mode on the remote control to being on just for the docking and liftoff maneuvers.

    Manual coasting at 9:53 : battery lasts for 7 hours
    Manual deceleration at 9:58 : battery lasts for 1 hour
    Manual acceleration at 9:48 : battery lasts for 24 minutes
    Automatic full-thrust acceleration at 42:03 : battery lasts for 28 minutes
    Automatic "coasting" from 42:14 to 46:46 : at the beginning the battery life is stuttering down to 22 minutes and at the end 16 minutes. That would mean the average battery drain over that time should show 17 minutes at the beginning and 12 at the end.
    That jump from between 28 minutes to 17 minutes when the autopilot starts firing all its thrusters instead of firing no more thrusters should give you an idea of how much you can extend your flight time by fixing that. (Possibly more than going from 2 to 3 or from 3 to 5 batteries would give you!)
    43:43 "What else could I put in?"
    You could add some logic for some flashing warning lights that activate while the shuttle is touching down/ taking off. I think I remember those 2:1 sloped armor blocks gripping the connector having only armor underneath? That's where I'd hide the logic for purely cosmetic things. You could also hide the docking timers there, but I think being able to see from the 3rd person camera what the shuttle's program is currently doing is a nice touch.

    3 Suggestions for improving your waypoints:
    A
    I think when you lift up from the asteroid station you don't need to go to the 'Align1' waypoint. During the approach from 10:20 to 10:55 it looks like your "Waypoint 2" is at a high enough angle that heading off directly from "Approach 2" to "Waypoint 2" won't make the autopilot try to fly through your landing platform or your other shuttles. And if you add any tall shuttles in the future, you will probably want to move "Approach 2" to be higher above the landing pad anyways.
    B
    I would not number the "Approach X" and "Dock X" waypoints, but use the actual destination abbreviation, as in:
    "Taxi - Mid/Aster - Approach Mid" or
    "Taxi - Mid/Aster - Dock Aster".
    That makes it much more intuitive to figure out which one is which. Not only for you avoiding mistakes, but also for us figuring out what your schedule does.
    C
    I would rename the "approach" points (at least for zero g landing pads) to "Taxi - [route] - Above [destination]". There will most probably always be only 1 waypoint directly above each pad; but on the other hand "Approach 1" plays an important role in aligning the shuttle and "Align 1" is technically also a part of the approach procedure. (Even worse, "Align 1" is part of the approach route to the 2nd (!) destination, leading back to advice B above.)

    Love this. Love drones, I'm on xbox. Keep it coming! Auto miners, auto fighter, auto ship building, auto assembly on loops for ships and power source from stone, auto rebuilding nuclear homming missles, a completely automated civilization and fleet to fight other's.

    My drones when they doc under set up actions, auto lock on, turn on timer block at doc, and at the location again (aka next point) turn off remote control. The timer at the base just waits and turns the autopilot back on. Your next waypoint can be where the ship is again to set up unlock connecter, and go to the next point.

  • @OmegaDoesThings
    @OmegaDoesThings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Could be mistaken, but if I recall correctly you can still do the gravity thing without the artificial mass block. I recall being on an MP server where autopilot flew a hydrogen vehicle from planet surface to an asteroid base, and it would always reorient at the last minute.

  • @STSWB5SG1FAN
    @STSWB5SG1FAN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Just thinking that maybe you should set the wait time to a full minute (or two) so that the batteries can get a decent amount of charge before disconnecting. Also those asteroids are static objects, correct? You wouldn't have to worry about them drifting into your line of travel🤔

    • @Dynoids

  • @MythosHB

    Like cbm 298x I also prefer to use [PAM] for taxi.
    But what you could do: Start a timer on the waypoint that starts the long section. The timer should wait long enough to reach max speed, and then shut down any thruster you feel safe to do so and start another timer. The latter then waits roughly for the duration to fly to the next waypoint and enable all thrusters before reaching the next waypoint. Any deviation from the course (due to no correction thrusting) will then be corrected by the autopilot.

    I'm not sure (will have to test), but I'm fairly sure that you could use the remote to turn off the a 'brakes' thruster group (containing the front thrusters) - which should trick the auto-pilot into not needing to thrust forwards once it reaches 'coasting' speed. Remembering to turn them back on again for the docking approach, obviously. Too late for this series, obviously, but something to keep in mind for future drone projects? ;-) Great work on the space lift, by the way. You've tempted me to add that to the list of things to try doing myself - lol

    You can make a auto miner in a similar way. Have it mine a resource and drop it off at a mini station ( just a refinery, battery, 2 solar panel, timer block,large storage, 2 conectors. The timer block is a automatic switch lock feature to allow the miner to turn off and recharge. The miner gets to the ore fast. Then turns on drills and slowly mines thru. Then mines out. And docs at mini base(ideally 2kl away from ore so it can regenerate while miner recharges for infinite resources! Then set up a cargo ship exactly like this one but with a lot of storage and a sorter, to go to all the mini bases and collect all the refined ore and bring them to base. If they are close together with all ores it can be all automated. If they are not a player will need to use the cargo ship or ride along. Maybe use jump drive to collect it fast from far away locations.

      By the way you set it to a specific speed by lowering the amount of times to get to the specific speed. For example(not real in game numbers) if a increment is 5 then lowering speed from 100 to 20 you would have to put the lower speed command in set up actions 16 times. Or 1 time on a loop timer that you turn off after that number of seconds(set loop timer to 1 sec) so loop timer lowers speed by 5 every 1 second and you turn it off after 16 seconds. I usually have just 2 speeds i use. 100 aka max, and 20 for docking and mining. But thats just me on xbox.

    Group 2 or 3 large thrusters to turn them off when in 0g. Alternatively increase the mass of the craft with ballast or a pressurised habitat for passengers on top of the taxi, actual rooftop becomes a floor since it's already flat.

    • @Krommandant
      @Krommandant 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also make it go and stop on demand instead of infinite automated looping. You can also choose to map different dock options (lets say you leave from dock B and arrive at dock C).

    • @Krommandant
      @Krommandant 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could turn all thrusters off on a timer associated activated from an action in the different GPS markers in the autopilot to conserve fuel.

    Should the taxi sit at the pad and charge until a sensor detects a player in the cockpit and then give 10 seconds to depart? Taxies would idle at the pad that way and there would never be a point where you were stuck waiting on one. You could add lights on the taxi during arrival and departure.

    Setting up two Timers to Turn off Precision mode and turn off the Dampers while flying back to Earth's way point. Then switch both back on for final Trip. This should save you fuel and energy.

  • @sloanemactire8780

    Could you set up the waypoint actions to disable unnecessary thruster groups (for instance, have a "coast" group that will shut down 50% of the maneuvering thrust and reverse thrust)?
    Also, according to current international standards for navigation lights in space, you're missing your top and bottom navigational lights (two white upward strobes, one yellow downward strobe). IF you want to get that level of accuracy, that is. ;)

  • @SpaceEngineerErich
    @SpaceEngineerErich 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't get to my game at the moment so I can't check to see if this is disabling dampeners is an option, but you could set it up so when the ship gets to the last waypoint before it starts the long haul start a TB that waits long enough for the ship to get to max speed. Then I am pretty sure you can tell it to shut off the dampeners, then shut off autopilot and trigger another TB to turn it back on once you get close to the next waypoint. That way the ship will coast and you can save battery power.
