Great video as usual Ivan!😊 It's so nice that you pay for your family's internet even when you're not there! I love how open and transparent you are about your funding, I think a lot of people will benefit from this.

Thank you! My intent is to provide as much insight as possible to help prospective and current grad students through every aspect of the graduate school process.

Yes, but it can’t be within your institution. There are institutional rules about how much you can work per week.

Thanks Ivan. Just a quick one. I will like to know if all PhD students in foreign schools like USA, Canada, Australia and UK are entitled to a monthly stipend. Is it a privilege for few students or it's a legitimate earning for all prospective PhD students. Thanks ahead. I plan to put pen to paper and start a PhD program soon but so skeptical about getting funding because I have not been able to save enough cash till date to embark on a self sponsored program.thanks for the good job too

Hi Joseph, in the USA, many PhD programs offer full funding for their students. This could include tuition costs, stipend and health insurance. It’s going to vary from program to program. I would go on the website to see what funding looks like and you can always reach out to the financial aid office for further information. The international students in my program receive full funding.

Is working 20 hours a week while doing your PhD hard ? Or have you always kept a busy lifestyle? Thanks for the video tho!! Very informative and thank you for being honest about finances 🙏🏼

It’s definitely a lot of work, but manageable. This is my second time in graduate school, so I have the advantage of already knowing what to expect with the course load. I manage my time by utilizing a digital calendar, physical calendar and weekly to-do-lists. It helps me get through all my tasks. During my first quarter of the PhD, I worked full-time and that was definitely hard!

Great video :) I am gonna apply to UCSD this years, for the PHD program in communication. I would like to know if this fellowship u have been receiving since the first semester at UCSD. One of my biggest concerns related to UCSD is the cost to live in the city. I am pretty sure that 1500 would be less than the necessary to live in SD. I am trying to discover if in other departaments they also offer this fellowships

Hi Thayane, that Fellowship is specific to my department which is education studies. All first year students receive that fellowship in addition to 20 per week readership. So in total I make around $2,300 which should be enough for basic necessities. I was completing my PhD remotely for the first year so I am not sure if it truly will cover all costs. I think it might. I plan to make an updated video when I move out there next academic year. I would ask the staff in your department to learn more about funding or attend a virtual webinar about admission and ask your questions about funding there.

@@IvanValdovinosGradSchool thanks a lot! That’s what I am going to do. I am from Brazil, unfortunately life is pretty hard here. I want a program that can fully found the expenses. This video that you are planning to make will help a lot! Again, thank you!!

Hi! Congratulations!!! I am wrapping up my second year of my PhD program and the 1st year of being on campus. I am going to make a how much money I spend video soon to document my experience while being on campus. I do want to caveat that every experience is different depending on lifestyle and already acquired assets. I would I spend more than most PhD students because I eat out almost every meal. However, I do have the luxury of utilizing my savings that I accumulated while working full time in a well paying job for four years before enrolling in my program. Subscriber and stay tune for a breakdown of my spending habits plus information about the income streams I have as a student aka my TA and GSR positions.
