Goddess Jörð

  • Let’s turn our attention to an elusive goddess, Jord / Jörð / Iord. Often described simply as ‘the earth’, she holds an unusual position in Nordic Heathenry, one defined by mystery and sporadic attestations in the lore. She is most often described as Thor’s mother, and a lover of Odin, sometimes called Fjörgyn or Hlóðyn - her connections to the land, the earth and by extension, nature itself is rather undisputed.
It is worth mentioning here that Thor’s association with Jörð helps inform modern heathens of his associations with agriculture - reinforcing that ‘everyman’s god’ identity that many hold dear. As the son of Jörð (Jarðar burr, as he is sometimes described) he is grounded in Midgard - our world - as a force of protection and strength, tied to us innately.
With mentions in both the Poetic and Prose Edda, alongside an incredibly brief appearance in Saxo Grammaticus’s History of the Danes (Gesta Danorum), Jörð has close ties and unspoken (no doubt lost) importance to the history of the gods as it is presented. There’s certainly an element of Jörð being a figure that played a crucial role in the ‘early days’ of the gods, founding and laying the path for the stories we are eventually told.
Snorri Sturluson in Skáldskaparmál of the Prose Edda offers the most information we have on her connections to the greater family tree:
How should one call the earth? Thus: by calling her Flesh of Ymir, and Mother of Thor, Daughter of Ónarr, Odin’s Bride, Co-Wife of Frigg and Rindr and Gunnlöd, Mother-in-law of Sif, Floor and Bottom of the Storm-Hall, Sea of Beasts, Daughter of Night, Sister of Audr and of Day.
An important element there lies in the Flesh of Ymir, suggesting the Jörð may have been born/created upon the death of Ymir. Other translations replace Co-Wife of Frigg to rival (notably Faulkes in his 1995 translation). While she is often described as one of the Jotnar - and while her ties to Ymir are recorded, though different from other Jotunn - Rudolf Simek argues her position as an Aesir goddess in the Dictionary of Northern Mythology.
There are some modern heathens who believe Nerthus to be another name for Jörð, potentially tying her more closely to the Vanir gods. The Vanir’s seemingly innate connection with fertility and the natural world would fit seamlessly with Jörð’s associations.
Regardless, in strictly human terms, she was clearly known across the Germanic region, persevering across history and geography.
Yet despite all of this, she remains relatively absent from ritual on the greater heathen landscape. Do you work or worship Jörð? What does she represent to you? Does anyone have any personal gnosis or experiences with her?

When i commit a animal to the earth. I say a prayer to her to hold and love my beloved pet as they mean to world to me. Animals are honest they don’t lie to you. They give you love and are to me more thrust worthy than men.

Thor the the thunderer the bear that turned Odin's Mead into beer is the lord of the goats who herald the old goat hammer head witcher wand Mjolnir, Thor was brought up by their father Odin the Yule father the old father Christmas of the Yule moon associated with Odin's wolves Thor was brought up to be like Jord so Thor could become a male witch known as a witcher and so Thor could see like a seer or like Odin's raven's that Jord helped Odin see like with his last eye from up high in the sky on the mountains of Jord where Odin placed Valhalla. I am directly related to the English naturalist Charles Robert Darwin we are both directly from the patronymic Thorstein family we also inherit the title of Thor known as Bjorn which means the bear so I don't doubt we are also Thorbjorn family from Thor it is hard to tell what names are on our most sacred destroyed ancient rune stone that is a stone of Jord engraved with Odin's runes, also my family and Charles Darwin's family are from Norse peace keeping pirates of Normandy or Norse money that to me saved a multicultural alliance between England and multicultural France that was threatened with division by one powerful disrespectful god king known as Harold Godwinson who we could have easily made peace with seeming we were family and we both suffered from friendly fire because we both lost everything for helping my ancestor Widukind the wolf of Saxony who requested our help with freeing all Norse and Saxons or English which is why our Norse families ended up in Dane law of England and Norse money of France, sadly we are divided because we lost everything and became lost at sea suffering forever from identity crisis a little too much because of the destruction done to our sacred ways that can be saved by nature loving archaeologist thankfully. Also I love my Saxon ancestor Widukind the wolf of Saxony who is not at fault for our loss of so much sacred Norse culture because Widukind suffered for defending us which is why I have high hopes that any trust worthy descendant of Widukind can help archaeology save our sacred ways. I really need to know from archaeologist or my relatives from Charles Darwin if my Thorstein or Thorbjorn family really are from a real Thor because we are dying off from tyranny and unwanted race war that we can not end peacefully because we are dishonored and disrespected puppets of tyrants that can not fight us fair maybe because my own invented the fair rules of war that could possibly end war for the good of multicultural trade.
