In Ontario , Canada we kept our in lamb ewes in outside lots over the winter. Lots of snow but as long as they had say 3 months of wool growth post shearing, they were very comfortable in the open lots during snowstorms and cold winter days as cold as - 25c Really enjoy your videos and allnthe effort you put into making them interesting.
I have done the mg/kg sums in notebook before. A lot of the mineral drenches and injectables have such low selenium you are OK doubling up. If you accidentally drenched a lamb twice with a worm drench containing 0.5mg/ml selenium, you would just in the OK range, as long as a tight weight band. MSD have a online calculator to check saftey when dosing with multiple products. Selenium pill in fertiliser is another thing to consider
Yea, thats the concern 😅, we do use selenium prills, and its the double dose teamed with double up on products that is of concern. If they spit some out, you really want to drench again from a worm drench resistance point of view, but then from a selenium point of view you don't 😅
Selenium and zinc are important for fertility in both ewes and rams (and cattle) - low selenium is a cause for abortions in pregnant ewe's - NZ soil is low in selenium
Do you roughly know how much DM/hd your r2s are eating per day? Was thinking of doing something similar to get rid of surplus balage and free up more crop for my ewes.
Currently about 6.5-7kg/head/day, hoping to get that to 8+ when the crappy rounds are all gone (theres only 6 left). The feed that went into the squares is better quality.
Ok thanks for that, do you think you’re getting reasonable growth rates? Or at least maintain their body weight well over their time on the feed pad? I think you’ve convinced me from watching your vids that it works well.
Its hard to know, these guys were pinched in the summer of 22-23 as calves, which is why they're still there. The calves definitely need better quality than the R2s. Theres no doubt that baleage isn't as good for growth as brassicas or beet, but they're warm and dry 👍, which adds a fair bit.
14:50 good overhead shot of the race. Speaking as a townie ... that's an efficient configuration of your races ... up & back ... must save a bit of walking when you've got hundreds of sheep to drench etc.
Nah, definitely not under the roof, and ideay not while on crop. But watch this space. Sheep seldom drink from a trough thru winter, and when they do they'll drink 2-5 litres in a go. Its a hard balancing act. Works far better in hot climates or with cattle. Sheep get most of their hydration rwquirements from their food 👍
Its being worked on now. I think most breeders are breeding it into all their genetics. Its the old story though, breeding takes time if you don't want to give up other good traits.

Cheers, yea we're not as cold as you guys 😅. Possibly wetter though, dry cold is good but wet cold can be hard on stock.

Its pretty good, could just do with thrm being twice as long 😅
Do you have water in your sheep and Swede paddocks? An easy way to get minerals into animals is to use an inline dispenser

Swedes contain a lot of water ... just going from my experience as a home cook.
Hi I like your video
Can you get worm resistant rams in Romneys?

@@deepsouthsheepbeef4307 👍👍 I hear they making good progress on merinos, I can see how it could be slower on meat breeds. At least it’s coming 👏👏
