I think another reason why Doug thinks the Sailor Guardians transformations and outfits are "sexualized" is because of a double standard we in western cultures have about how we treat female bodies vs male bodies, namely that we treat female bodies as inherently more sexual than male bodies. When a man is naked, even if he's conventionally attractive, it's allowed to be played as just a gag, whereas when a woman is naked, it's almost always considered to be fanservice to some extent, because women's bodies are automatically considered sexual objects by default in a way that men's bodies simply aren't.

Doesn't help the fact that there exists weebs who goon over the Sailor Guardians in spite of their age differences. Like for crying out loud, you have foot lovers gooning over Usagi's feet because of episode 4.

One thing i found incredibly frustrating about Doug's critique is him pointing out how all the Sailor Scouts are conveniently close by geographically throughout the series to be introduced and join the party. Like, yes, Doug, i have noted how this story about an ancient moon princess reincarnating along with her friends and her lover in the present plays with the idea of destiny and cycles drawing true companions together. How dare the story use the tropes it is directly bringing up? *Cinema Sins ding*

What gets me is that Doug is a huge fan of Avatar the Last Airbender, a show where the main character has to learn to use his powers to defeat the bad guy while also being a kid who acts like a kid and is often silly. But a GIRL going through a similar (and admittedly pretty conventional) arc? Noooooo! She's a stupid, lazy coward!

What’s more, he once said that Kim Possible was just a self-insert for the audience with no personality. I think that’s just what he expects when he sees female heroes despite how wrong it is, and he thinks that they should be more masculine than Usagi. Which is why he likes KP but not Usagi.

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

Let's be real, though. Aang is way more competent than Usagi at the start. He's not freaking out, he just doesn't want to hurt people so he fights defensively. And that's more admirable, but it also just works FOR HIM.
The wild thing is that if Aang was in Usagi's position he'd really struggle because you can't beat the monsters by blowing them around and running away. These things aren't after you, they're here to hurt people. If you run away then they're just going to KEEP HURTING PEOPLE, and you'll be responsible for innocents actively dying!
Usagi's fine killing to save people she cares about. But Aang isn't. He'd struggle to throw the Moon Tiara and he'd try to find another way out of things.

    • @mattmclaren3067

@dracocrusher another factor, to be fair, is Usagi is supposed to be what happens when a fairly normal, sheltered civilian child gets superpowers and a destiny no one would've predicted.
Aang isn't. He has had a very specific upbringing and it had led to him being a very specific lead with very specific reactions.
Not disagreeing btw. Just adding on.

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

@@mattmclaren3067 Oh yeah, absolutely. Aang's problem isn't a lack of training, it's an ideology. He's been bending since a kid and he's straight-up one of the youngest Airbending masters we see in the series.
Meanwhile, Usagi is just thrown right into the deep end of things, which makes it way more satisfying when she starts to get better and figures out how to do clever things to take out stronger monsters on her own.

Back when this review came out I was still a fan and tried to respect Doug’s opinion but when I look back on it, he made this whole review just to take out his frustration he’s harbored for the show that awakened him as a kid. I’m not even stretching, he goes into great detail about the memory in a very TMI sketch. It’s so weird hearing him ‘slutshame’ Usagi for existing even after he found out about her age. I don’t think Doug is a pdf, just ignorant and never trying to understand why we love SM. He just assumed all the fans are as perverted as he was, never once realizing the irony of this whole thing.

Sailor Moon is literally the girl version of Super Sentai. The creator is a fan of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider but was disappointed with how the female characters got shafted so created Codename Sailor V and Sailor Moon as her own take on the genre from a female perspective. It's an example of, "Don't like how things are done? Then go make your own," and did it perfectly!

Completely agree that Doug Walker doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about, but there were a few moments in the 90’s anime that were the mostly male staff to put it lightly indulging themselves. The most blatant example being Chibiusa’s transformation into Black Lady which had several leering closeups of her hands, legs, butt, breasts, and hair growing. I have often laughed my ass off thinking what Doug’s reaction to that scene would be considering how sexualized he thinks the Senshi’s transformations are. This is not meant to take away the impact that Sailor Moon had on its target audience, I just think it’s important to acknowledge that these moments exist, and how much you feel they take away from the message of the show is up to you. As I said before these moments are few and far between so I don’t think it hurts the show that much.

In this speficit case it was just Usagi's naked sihouette which is basically nothing. parents were weird about anime here too in the 00'a but it was mostly because of racist reasons 'cause anime is "strange" and "japanese culture is weird" and you had to be a mega-conservative weirdo to actually get offended by the nudity.

Nostalgia Critic's video on Sailor Moon was so bad that I stopped watching his videos because of it. His statements about Sailormoon being "sexualized" especially annoyed me because it shows he has no understanding of anime and manga culture.
Sailor Moon is shoujo(girls manga) and 99% of shoujo manga creators are women. The same applies to josei(women's manga) as well. There are also women that work in shounen (boy's manga)and seinen(men's manga) but it is less common.
With that said the fact the creator is a women has nothing to do with whether a manga is sexualized or not. It is common for women mangaka to make porn for either female or male audiences. There is even a such thing as shoujo smut.
Shoujo just doesn't do fanservice the way shounen does. Shounen likes to sexualize female characters bodies by portraying them in a suggestive manner. While shoujo outwrite depicts sex. Shoujo is way more blunt and open about sex than shounen.
Sailor Moon isn't trying to be sexual either in the shoujo way or the shounen way. It's just a magical girl series with romance.

i think giving dic some grace in showing the early spoilers aspect of how they handle the story is warranted because at the time, continuous story in children's animation was super uncommon, with the wide-spread belief that kids wouldn't be able to follow a story if it spanned over weeks and esp over seasons (leaving big gaps between seasons-and iirc the first season was split up as multiple seasons coinciding with the 24 ep/season standard here).
so reinforcing where the plot was headed from the beginning by repetition was likely seen as *crucial* for kids to follow at the time. western animation had few (if any) shows aimed at children with continuous plots. tv as a whole back then was more episodic than we would expect now.
so like it is a wonky choice but it makes sense in the context of time they were handling this show. the continuous storyline allowing more chara complexity by asking the audience to follow and remember their development, fwiw, is a big reason i think a lot of us loved the show.

It should be noted that Doug has since referenced this review in other Nostalgia Critic videos and they are jokes played at his expense, notably the Toonami video. I think it hints that he's aware this was a mistake.

The ironic part is that being part of the Sailor Moon fandom and seeing how bad a lot of the fans get… Doug’s takes feel so ironically charming to me now and benign. Doug’s takes as some goofy casual aren’t half as bad as a lot of the shit I’ve seen come from fans.

POWER RANGER FRANCHISE- Yeah a basic monster of the weak formula, but the show put more focus on the Rangers as characters as well as the monster fighting.
SCOOBY-DOO FRANCHISE- A franchise that been around since the late 60’s (55 years to date and 47 years when Nostalgic Critic posted this video), the only show by Hanna-Barbera that survived the longest versus the other, and definitely have broken the formula multiple times. For example crossovers with multiple guest stars(THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES, GUESS WHO, comics- TEAM-UP), real or fictional, show or movie in which the monsters were real (The 13 GHOST, MYSTERY INC., Live-Action Movies, etc), the LAFF-A-LYMPICS, SHAGGY & SCOOBY-DOO GET A CLUE, and lastly VELMA.

Im not sure why The Algorithm introduced you to me, but I'm not sure what the point is of being offended that a classic anime protagonist is portrayed as a bit dumb. Shes not exactly Kagome or Edward Elric...
Heres a few excerpts from TV Tropes:
Idiot Hero: A female example, being depicted as Book Dumb and a bit of a Cloudcuckoolander at times, but especially in the early series since she matures and becomes a true hero later on. She isn't quite so bad in the manga though, the original anime tended to exaggerate many characters
Innocently Insensitive: Due to her naivety, she has a habit of unintentionally offending others. In one episode, when Miss Haruna is hospitalized for being put into comatose, Usagi fails to understand the seriousness of the situation and tells the others that this is a good thing for her
Kiddie Kid: At fourteen, she starts out as a carefree crybaby who loves childish things, just wants to have fun and can't keep up with the kind of schoolwork expected of her age. She grows out of it after she spends some time as Sailor Moon
Kid Hero All Grown Up: Turns from a childish crybaby in junior high, woefully unprepared for her tenure as a Magical Girl, into the elegant, regal, powerful Neo-Queen Serenity of the utopian Crystal Tokyo. Even when she hasn't ascended, Eternal Sailor Moon (high-school age) is way more grown up than her past self. Her future daughter, Chibi-Usa, was especially shocked at the disparity between Usagi and Serenity
Kindhearted Simpleton: Not too bright but makes up for it with her good heart
Lazy Bum: She'd rather play video games and eat than study for tests. She even lampshades this when she's bewitched by Ramua in the 9th episode of Season 1.
Usagi: I have a lot of things to accomplish today. First off, I have to get home. Then, eat a pork bun. After that, finish playing my video game, take a bath, and then - OHNO, LOOKWHATTIMEITISALREADY!
Let's Get Dangerous!: She'll usually drop her buffoonish behavior if someone she cares about gets threatened. This becomes more pronounced as time goes on
If a parody review can't call her stupid in a comedy skit, what are they allowed to call her? 🤔

Maybe it’s rose colored glasses but I hated Lina’s voice actor worse in the newer dub because all the meanness and backhanded comments came off worse, more like a bully. Maybe some of the lines were different too, I’ve never rewatched the dic dub, but every single time she viciously harped on usagi for being useless and a bad leader in the early episodes it was infuriating. Where old lady Luna voice makes her seem more out of touch and not understanding of someone’s priorities who’s young?

Sometimes I wonder if Doug would go on the internet and search for common comments people had about whatever he’s reviewing. I know Linkara said he would watch a movie once, while taking notes, and then go on to do the review of it. It’s just a hunch so I could still be wrong but I wouldn’t surprised if his workflow includes browsing the audience reviews on RT and IMDB for his scripts

Yeah this was the one that made me begin to realize NC was getting bad. Like He sucked at talking about anime in general at this point (although I did kinda enjoy his Ponyo review did make me want to check out the movie) but this whole bare minimum effort look & then going on a tangent about Japan's Consent laws was the beginning of the cracks. & people gave me shit for hating on this one when it came out. After his crap reviews of The Last Airbender, Bloodrayne, The clipless reviews & Christmas with the Cranks (the one that broke the camel's back) I was done with the guy & had to wait until a company wide controversy & him bashing The Wall to get any sort of validation & seeing people finally take the hint that guy just wasn't funny anymore.

I don't hate sketch comedy. I still enjoy it a lot. The specific problem with Doug and this video is that...Doug doesn't understand anything about Sailor Moon or why it appeals to his fans. He just shouldn't have talked about it. In general, his worst videos are when he is trying to engage with a movie or show that he doesn't actually like or understand.

This episode was made in 2013. World was a whole different place back them, no need to say about TH-cam. There wasn't 5 hours long analysis videos, there was some guys, who had fun and express themselves and did cringe stuff because "it's internet, who cares?". Obviously it's not the case now, but back then TH-cam was much more simplier and NC could just trash talk about one of your favourite shows not being afraid to offend anyone, because it all was for funnies

100% Agree with what you guys said! Nostalgia Critic represents the typical “I don’t get Sailormoon Narcissistic Ignoramus” out there. I’m an OG fan since the 90s and was in high school when I got into that show. It had legions of fans of all ages then. A football player friend of mine also loved the show and not because of sexy miniskirt reasons - it’s the friendships. When I watch the OG dub it brings back great memories and even a crush I had who looked a lot like Darien Mamoru. For years I’ve had to deal with 💩 like Nostalgia Critic. And now I’m so happy at how much Sailormoon is appreciated by ALL!

🤔... You know, with villains like Beryl, Jadeite, Zoisite, Kunite, Malachite, Emerald, Prisma, Sapphire, & Diamond, I have to wonder if Sailor Moon was an inspiration for Crystal Gems. I know Star vs. The Forces of Evil was inspired by the magical girl anime, but still, food for thought. Also, 1:37:04 - 1:37:16 why watch Doug review Evangelion when we have Bennett the Sage talking about it plenty on Anime Abandon?

Idk the skirts could be longer and even if they arent objectified (like how ironically nostalgia critic does) the girls are very much sexualized. Theres an inherent emphasis on them being female, engaging in romance, courtship and when chibimoon comes into the story parenting a child!? Just because these concepts are muted down to something paletable doesn't mean these things arent present.

You know, watching this was like watching My Little Pony fans? Okay, you get Sailor Moon, something that my nieces were obsessed with but did look like a rinse and repeat cartoon. I never stopped to watch it because at the time I felt it wasn't for me. But watching this video I began to understand how people who never read the series felt when I tried to explain Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I just expected everyone to understand context I understood from five books, a TV series and a really long radio adaptation. You never explained the show or all the dubs - because apparently there are more then a few of them. Or all these Sailors. What was the hook? Why does the show still hold you so many years later? What exactly was the storyline. I never like Doug Walker's review because it felt like an old man trying to explain what the kids were into. And his constantly misogynist insult towards the young women. (Hey Doug, if you see a schoolgirl uniform as sexual maybe the FBI should have a look at your computer storage.) Now I've been into various shades of geek for a very long time. i get a lot of it even if I don't understand it. (Cowboy Beebop being one of those examples. I mean I understood it but why everyone went so nuts over it was beyond me.) And I admit not being the biggest Anime/Manga fan as the stories gone on for way too long and not a lot of it is geared to help anyone jump on between anything. I'm leaving this video not understanding Doug Walker's problem with this kid's show or why you adults are still so into it. And I'm not being insulting, I could re-watch Robotech a billion times and I'd fight anyone who didn't respect that animation, but if I were to do a video about it I'd try to make people understand it. I don't understand Sailor Moon at all except "wasn't that an animation geared towards very young women." Sorry, but you guys didn't do anything to elevate that feeling.

this was up there with his Power Rangers reviews where he is clearly not from the generation who watched the show and is only doing it because youtube dropped it in his suggestions and fans ikely wanted him to review it because they wanted him to do more 90's content.
The Turbo film review he basically made Linkara cameo in a bad replica Dino Megazord cockpit so he could deliver his HOPR rant in a unhinged manner on the switch over from Ohranger to Carranger being so damn rough and clearly it was scripted that linkara had to deliver his lines as unhinged since his HOPR rant is calmer but critic liked to flanderrise his channel partners into leaser hosts to make him look good.
