Honestly, taking in consideration how long this game has been in development hell, how many hands have passed it along, It's nothing short of a miracle that the game isn't a complete clusterfuck.

The gameplay is tho. In a good way, half the time you don't even know what's going on but it's like your thinking "Fuck it I waited 10 years for this I don't care about shit besides killing zombies lmao."

I personally love the game and the writing definitely feels like a cheesey zombie flick and that's part of the charm tbh. I love that the game doesn't take itself seriously and I can just goof around with characters I find funny.
Theres no OKAY sign on TH-cam just thumbs up and thumbs down...(this 'game' still has all of the undead special attack 'FURY' and none of the undead special defence 'FILTH' which is odd as Skyrim was rated a game suitable for 15 year olds and you could control zombies).
Gotta disagree. Way preferred the writing in dead island and Riptide. A nice combo of campy and corny humor with a dreary backdrop and moments of despair made the world feel real enough to be immerisive but dumb enough to still have fun messing around in.

I honestly think that the character you picked made a huge impact on the playthrough, I played as Ryan and while super basic, his lines weren’t annoying and I even laughed a few times. Im actually enjoying my playthrough a lot, the Gore mechanics are absolutely nuts.
Charlie is not a fan of wacky line, dude dislike devil may cry dialogue so never really take him seriously in that matter, just like dunkey with jrpg lmao
@@Rimanda Dead island 2 is kinda supposed to be like a cheesy B movie. Charlie kinda missed the mark on that, but at the same time. To each their own. I played as Bruno and he does have his moments, a few times I laughed. It’s an all around upgrade from Dead Island and Riptide, as it should be. Hopefully the dead island ip doesn’t die. Maybe one day, hopefully much sooner. There will be a Dead Island 3 or continuation.
If one liners make how much fun your game is then, you have no idea how gameplay is supposed to work

I like how some of the dialogue changes based on the character.
Like in the sewers I met this dude that has a burn on his face, and he mentions how people treated him badly, I was using Amy and she says "Its difficult when you don't look like everyone else" which I thought was fitting considering she has a prosthetic leg.
Overall I'm loving the game, agreed on the writing but mechanics make up for it.
Amy was hands down the best character out of everyone.

i can objectively say the first 2 games were trash... but it was good trash, MY trash, they were buggy and janky and whatever else you want but they were lots of fun (at least to me).

@@ctmclearly3108 At release it was cool game, but after some time you could see how fighting was unnecessary clunky and slow, collision bug one on another and story didn't even matter...because this game was pretty shit Dying light came like a revelation in zombie genre.
@@Hao256 agreed, Dying Light ended up delivering on the promises Dead Island had made, and then some! Dead Island was pretty jank and incongruent on launch, and the zombie craze of the era couldnt really save it from its own mediocrity

I liked Ryan’s “I’m annoyed by everyone but I have no choice” attitude. Really energetic voice lines and very charismatic.
Playing through this the last few days really scratches an itch. I can’t remember the last time I finished a 50+ hour AAA game filled with bloat. This is simple, fun, and runs really great. I can see why people don’t want to pay full price, but if you enjoy zombie games and don’t have time to finish huge games, this really does hit the spot.
Yeah I dont think I can 100 percent agree with this review because of that. Seems like he was expecting something mind blowing but ita just a solid fun game. From what I've seen of him playing it he is speedrunnig to get a review out when this is a game that you can kinda take your time with and just have some fun. It might not take any risks but what it does it does pretty welland honestly aside from some glitches here and there its run pretty solid on ps5 which is more than I can say for a lot of other games. I would personally would push his score up ten to 15 percent. Good game not a must have but if you wanna blow some time get it on sale or if you are a hard-core zombie fan get it now cause it really hits the spot.

@@nickm1770 yea, charlie definitely was not looking at this game for what it is. trying to fish for things it was absolutely not aiming for. it is borderline amazing for what it was trying to be. a goofy, action filled, fast paced, zombie killing sandbox. it isnt meant to be a deep story driven game with crazy plots. it is literally meant to be cringey and just mindless fun
My standards were low and I'm pleasantly surprised and loving this game. Love just exploring the areas and the environmental story telling is very good.
I'm actually having a ton of fun with this game lol. It's a very big guilty pleasure ferrsure. The flesh system is incredible man. And I'm definitely getting quite a bit of zombies in the areas. I definitely didn't buy this game for the story, pretty sure most ppl knew it was gunna be very campy and cheesey. We got it for mindless zombie killing and theh definitely delivered there. Also I usually really don't like 1st person melee games but I think they did a great job with it, it feels really satisfying especially with the ps5s haptic feedback.
Yeah, people are complaining like they were expecting some Hollywood movie level story and dialogue when it's clearly just a game made for people to hop on and mindlessly have fun slaughtering zombies for a bit with over-the-top weapons. Also mindblowing to me that people are crying about how ridiculous the characters are, like what did you expect when you read the "Male stripper runs around Beverly Hills killing zombies with electrified sledgehammers" angle? Obviously, it's gonna be goofy af and therefore fun as hell 😂

The previous games had the same cheesy writing and depending on which character you pick will add that characters personality to the story which I find pretty engaging because it makes me curious about the other characters motives, personalities, and perspectives. It's just nitpicking from charlie honestly because the story isn't the priority. It's there for the people that care but the main focus is the over the top slaughter and gore. I’ve only played the first Dead Island game and despite it’s problems, it was an enjoyable fun and experience for me. From what I’ve seen and heard about this second game, it is exactly what I expected.
This is gonna be a great game to get on sale for 20$ and playthrough with a friend.
Disagree. Not every game has to have some deep story or complex writing, or rich lore. This game was intended to be a good hack n slash zombie killing fun game, and it achieved that easily

Honestly, I'm playing through it as Jacob and having a fun time. Wish there was a bit more content in terms of setting and quests, but seeing all the different ways to kill zombies has been an absolute blast. I'll take an okay game that's been in development hell, considering it's less broken than 70% of titles coming out nowadays and it's more fun than a lot of em.
55 percent. I usually agree with charlie on the meters, but that feels ludicrously harsh. The story wasn’t 9/10, but until the ending it was fairly serviceable and even had some cool ideas that would’ve been fun to expand on in a future title. That ending was what dropped the story a point for me though. So rushed feeling. The biggest weakness for me that dropped it a bunch was the weapon variety, be it models or animations. It seemed kind of lacking. However my enjoyment of the game as a whole was a solid 8 at least.

If you played the first game - you know what you're about to expect and it delivers. Pretty solid for the fans who waited. Its an okay game for outsiders going in though

with how disappointing dying light 2 is, i was hoping for a way better game. the only improvement over dead island 1 is the combat. the story is worse, it’s not even open world which is probably the biggest downgrade. it just can’t compete with dl2 because it’s not open world. open world = more fun

I was a huge fan of both of the dead islands 1 and riptide, this one was so amazing the “open world” wasn’t a downside to me it didn’t feel super linear too me yes smaller than the first one but it was super fun I had an amazing time playing this game I didn’t really pay attention to the story becasue this game is more of a fun rag doll type of game and I like that.

Because I’m a Dead Island fan boy this game is 8.5/10 in my eyes. Loved every second. True Dead Island players never cared for the campaign, as the zombie slaying side of things has always been top notch & the gameplay is the reason why we enjoyed it so much. Don’t get me wrong, this game definitely has issues, but the positives out weigh the negatives by a mile.
It doesn't do anything better than the first one. That alone makes this a game worth of an anthem level score. 3/10

but that said, i feel like they could have literally released riptide just now, and as long as the graphics were updated i'd enjoy it just as much - which is to say, a great fucking deal. idk how long after the original it was released, could have been right after for all ik, but i played it at least a couple of years after the original, and i just remember thinking 'holy shit if they make a full on sequel i want it to be just like this.' more of the same is actually great when you loved the original.
Honestly as someone who's waited what is effectively my whole adult life for this game, I'm just glad it's even remotely playable. I don't care about the story, I just wanna squish zombie heads and watch the blood splash around.
Little disappointed in the lack of a compelling final boss, but the way video game companies have been churning out garbage lately, I'm just glad that it isn't a steaming pile of crap.
this review is honestly very unfair. dead island 2 was a great ride of a game the most fun ive had all year, the writing in this game was better than it was supposed to be and honestly i think this game wasnt made for people who are new to the game its for dead island fans otherwise they wouldve changed particualar things they chose to keep that resemble the original, like the hud, as to the story being too short theres an expansion coming and probably another coming afterwards. dambuster has only made homefront in 2016 and chorus so they are to the short stories than longer ones but they did a damn good job regardless and i hope theres a 3rd installment
My favourite part of this game is the mirrors. Not sure exactly what it is, but i'm pretty sure it's a square room behind the "mirror" with a reversed texture slapped inside of it. Wild strat.
I wanna buy this game purely because it took so long to come to market. I never played any of the Dead Island games but this one deserves a full purchase

finished it recently, and have to agree with the very abrupt end, i expected it to be a scene we fight back to the lab and help Tisha with an the hammer being super OP and tearing through/maiming the zombies in one hit, something goofy like that, then getting tisha back to sam patton and emma with a few quests inbetween, as for the ruben boss fight, very very generic, yes his attacks have basically all of the apex zombies abilities, mixed with the room filling up with zombies and apex variants, it felt like a super rushed boss battle where they said “if we don’t add all this it’ll just be a boring fight they’ve taken 50x before”, the story is very much just “go here and get this” “go here and kill this” all to be betrayed by the guy on the radio again, which for the record i seen coming ever since the i found the radio.
that being said, i played with friends and we had a fun time messing about and killing zombies in fun ways inbetween quests, the weapon building is super fun, acid to melt zombies was by far my favourite mod, i played as bruno because “lol he looks like lil pump and it’d be incredibly funny”, i found the opposite of empty places, most places we went to were packed with zombies (i’m not sure if that had anything to do with difficulty or the fact it was coop), didn’t really experience any ghost damage, hit detection seemed great
as a whole i’d probably give it a 7/10, the story really let the game down big time, felt like dead island and dead island riptide recycled and brought to america

I disagree with the low rating, I really enjoy how the combat feels and how reactive the zombies are when you are hitting them with whatever type of weapon you are using, That's the main focus on dead island, It's not about the story It's about the zombie slaying and there is multiple ways to do so with the skill/slayer cards and the animations/Gore is really top notch so far. Even the visuals and audio quality (especially the music its badass) Is really enveloping. I suggest to every person to not take some of the reviews so seriously and to heart, The game has great progression with your own characters skills and introductions to new enemy variances and types, If you think you will like this game, Just buy it! I have gone back to it consistently and i have never been bored or disappointed. Even in this comment section you can tell there are a lot of players who are really enjoying this game and I'm sure you will too if you are thinking about investing into this game.
Im playing solo since i feel this type of game is nice for the exploration on your own time and going at your own pace, The only downside is that i picked Dani as a starting character which has their stamina at max and it feels like i never run out of stamina compared to dying light 1 where you had to manage it a lot more, Light attacks & Sprinting don't USE stamina for some reason but character skills and heavy attacks do. I guess it's up to debate whether this is nice or not but i would rather feel my character getting tired after swinging a machete for 20 times in a row and not breaking a sweat lol.
I also highly suggest turning off the aim assist, It makes it so that your attacks have slight homing to them and i feel like that ruins the experience. Curveballs (throwable items) Are now on a recharge rather than having a quantity of them which i think is much more smart because you can't spam throwables and overall i think the game is much better than what most people would say, A lot of the low ratings i have read also make no sense.. Like one person complained about the zombies respawing? Like HELLO this is a zombie apocalypse, would you rather clear a street and never see zombies there again until you load back into the game? Anyways This shit is golden, buy it if you were thinking of it.
I think it's honestly an improvement in every way over the original even the cutscenes and story seem better and the characters seem more interesting but that's from point of view of a big fan of the original

From the gameplay, it feels like alot of the UI elements were ripped straight from Dying Light 2 and made to look slightly different
What I like about it is, it doesn't try to be something it isn't. It's a cheesy first-person zombie slayer, I also remeber Dead Island 1 & Riptide having the best GORE till it's date.
Thing is, original dead island was so hyped because of that incredible trailer which really nailed the desperation of the virus. And when the game came out the story was a disappointment. I liked the fact that they tried to go cheesy as possible, but DI was supposed to be a very serious game franchise

Personally I love this game, I’m still in the middle of it but am loving it so far. It’s fun, and dead island has always been making that the main priority so I’m happy. The story is ok sure but again I don’t think that’s the main focus and that’s totally fine, I love the mechanics, I love the combat, I love the gore, I think it’s all great. Killing zombies is what the game is about and they do that so damn well that it makes the rest of the game worth it all the time.
Dude picked the the most cringe-inducing designed character and then complained about the character's voice lines. If he had picked the u.k. fuckboy with shades or the firefighter it'd be much more tolerable

I'm wondering how much Charlie affect game sales at this point tbh. If you think about it 1m views and if he says the game is trash that COULD BE 70 mil dollars that people won't spend on the gamnes. I think this is GOOD imo. Publishers SHOULD fear push back if the games they "need" to push out no matter what even if they are actual garbage since they don't care and just want money.
Composite sledge (any locked perk works) + empowering perk + damaging perk + balanced perk + Melee Impactor+ Dani. That combined with skills that boost damage off of curveball for example made me able to treat crushers like runner's legs.

All of Charlie's complaints are honestly bad takes besides the slo-mo and ending. This game was really good. 55% is a criminal rating, the game excels in being one of the best zombie games to date. Easily a 85%

Sound design is another thing this game does really well. Reverberation from impacts in enclosed spaces, the squeak of your bloodied shoes after kicking a zombie, the crunch of bones and stuff. It's all really good.

I remember back in the original dead island when you could do some insane dismembering to the zombies. I hit a zombie with a end game bat and it straight up sent his torso (perfectly from the waist up) flying and the legs stayed standing straight.
i can see why people wouldn't like this game and totally respect it, personally love it - it's just one of those games u completely mentally turn off on and fuck around in and thats what i expected so not really let down, the gore system is beautiful, if you're thinking of buying this game and kind of on the fence it's one of those i recommend just waiting till it's on sale, don't buy full price
thing is. people are being super critical like this is meant to be a super serious game with an amazing story. it is not. it is meant to be a super goofy and mindless zombie killing game. they very clearly went for a completely different direction compared to the first game which tried its best to be serious but failed. this game is absolutely perfect for what it is. the quips, the over the top zombie killing, the goofy ass characters you come across, the ridiculous encounters you get. its a great game. they nailed it.

The dismemberment is actually some of the best I've seen in a game. The way the clothes tear with the flesh is incredible. Hitting the zombie in face destroys it forces the jaw to losen.

@@MothFable For real, I rewatched crowcat's video on L4D vs B4B just a day before the game came out, and from what I've seen so far, intentionally or not, they really took Valve's design philosophy to heart, at least on the zombies part. The game is zombie-centric, so they made the best and most satisfying zombie slaying mechanics you could ever experience.
It's just such a shame that the rest of the game is mid at best.
I think it’s a lil too gory sometimes tho. Like getting hit in the face doesn’t always need to be so destructive.

I really enjoyed Brunos character, I was going into the game expecting a pain in the ass character while I’m trying to go for an “assassin” build, but was actually decently surprised and genuinely happy to see how nice and compassionate he seemed

Combat looks boring in comparison to dying light..you hit an enemy and its like your weapon went through them

@@berdfragz8354 this is not the case as all. I think it's the most satisfying melee combat ever. Blades slice the exact spot you're hitting and blunt weapons, depending on their weight, push enemies around with every hit.

I actually only have one gripe with this game and it’s just the ending, I genuinely had a awesome time from start to finish with this game, the combat and physics/graphics were amazing and the fact I was able to go from start to finish without the game crashing or being difficult to run is hard to come by nowadays!
As someone who loved dead island and riptide i also love dead island 2, feels very much like those games and the combat feels great to me

I played my first play through as Jacob and found his dialogue really enjoyable I can’t speak for other characters but I can understand where some characters would get annoying

I went as Amy and she is pretty alright. For what it's worth this game came out amazingly imo, just the attention to detail on the gore alone with the combat system surprised me and I'm excited to see future improvements to make the game much better.

I’d say I’m halfway through the game and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. As mentioned the gore mechanics and crisp graphics are phenomenal imo. It might not be the “perfect” game but I don’t regret buying it one bit.

Honestly this game feels amazing to play. I thought it would get boring and repetitive real fast, but when you take your time to play through the game the combat gets better with every new weapon and area you discover.

I agree. I didn't get this game for the story lol i knew it was gunna be extremely campy and cheesey. I got it for mindlessly killing zombies. And usually i dnt like 1st person melee games but they really did a good job with it. It feels very satisfying, especially with the haptic feedback on ps5.
Far i also liked the game but you can't just be blind and not point out that its 70$ for a game the quarter the size the original map, removed cars, removed unique caricatures skill tree, removed legendaries, retcons the first game, and forgot new game plus and couldn't launch with multiplayer for PS4 and Xbox One so guess screw co-oping if you and your friends are last gen.
Just play the orginal so much more content
