It's a shame the Netflix series butchered the story so badly. Between adding the sister storyline nonsense and combining the Envoys and Quell as the same people was baffling. The story was right there, all they had to do was follow it and instead they ruined it.
The book is pretty dense and comparatively deliberate in its pacing. Helps explain the shitload of changes they made for the TV adaptation. Shame they couldn't get the license from the Hendrix Estate to have the hotel in the show, but given the series' content I can see how they wanted no part of it. @@mikeslime2143 The nonsense storyline with his sister was nonsense and totally unnecessary. They just had to follow the book. Also, they combined the Envoys and the Quell rebels. Try reading the books, then you'll know what quality writing is.
The first season, as far as adapting a book to Hollywood cinema, was very decent. There are some big changes compared to the books; for obvious factors of Hollywood drama & appealing to generally dim witted American audiences, this is understandable as to why it occurred. Still, the first season was decent, as far as Hollywood cinema adaptations go. Now, Season 2... very, VERY loosely takes inspiration of some little bits stemming from the 2nd book, and then carries on with completely terrible Hollywood-ified writing. They most certainly doused it with gasoline and tossed a match on the show with how awful all the writing was, coupled with very poor portrayal of characters (bad acting/actors). The 2nd book has a very fun and unique story, and is good writing. I can picture the Netflix writers skimming through, latching onto certain aspects, and thinking, "guhhh, I can make this cooler", then proceeding to slurp their drool back into their empty heads, and totally destroying the soul & life of the story by way of "adapting" it for cinema. So, on personal note of opinion, I too am okay they cancelled the show after the (very bad) 2nd season. I am appreciative of the first season, as it was fun & okay, not perfect ofc. Tis a shame, as there is so much potential for not just this book series, but many others. The one thing that I find very interesting is that most people did not notice that Kovacs or Kovach depending on how ignorant you want to be about the name is an Asian man in a western metropolitan and this book and his perceptions are reflected to the T even misunderstandings I encounter this a little bit temple hopping when I was traveling abroad but only from the opposite approach this is one of the reasons why I find this particular novel fascinating even move through time to Kashi has the same biases and limitations as anybody from Japan Korea and some parts of Manchuria I’d say he’s an even blending
I havent seen the series. Yet somehow, deapite really liking the audiobook so far, i think i have even less desire to see it now. I dont know how i know ill hate it, but i will. I know what happens to things that start with a well-written novel once theyve been run through the processing plant. This story is a blade runner; they made the series firing wildly off into something also a "rough-edged, cerebral futurist noir," but the prduction notes, thinking they would save face, also included the words, "Distinctly not Blade Runner." Thats how you let producers know that youre mak8ng an original!
This book has been on my list for years. I wanted to watch the show, but since the book is ALWAYS better I decided to listen first. I've watched plenty of sci-fi but never read it and was so confused at first. So I was gonna watch the show first after listening to about 5 or 6 chapters. I got through 10 minutes of the first episode. It's such trash compared to the book. I'll watch it after I'm done reading, but I'm not gonna get spoiled by that wack version of what so far is a great book. I'm a little more familiar with the world 4 hrs in.
weird. this says its 11 hours 59 minutes long. but i downloaded it and my downloaded mp3 is 12 hours 59 minutes. and i checked the beginning and the end of each are the same. i vaguely skipped through the downloaded version and there didnt seem to be any empty spots. no idea how it is 1 hour longer. maybe its playback speed somehow got slowed down just enough to not be noticeable but over time (11 hours 59 minutes) it was enough to add up to an extra hour? im confused.
Janet Pagnotta I’ve been getting shity quality with audible too. Honestly I think they just organized all the recordings out there and not everything is new. This book is from 2002 I think, so I guess when it was recorded first it was cassette quality.
are there similar books where the protagonist is less situationally out of their depth and isnt continually one step behind what is happening to them? i'm at the part where he got jumped at jerry's (?) and its sort of eye-rolly how easily he got punked. i'm looking for a bit more plot armour. Edit: he ends up having even less plot armour than I thought.
Yeah I noticed that too. It does make it hard to fully believe in the reality of the character when they are supposed to be well trained and yet fall into such traps in such an easy way. Although it didn't ruin the book and I love the film noir style. Puts me in a Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep mind from ( a.k.a. Blade Runner )
Mangas are the best place. Thought they did a good job on Ghost in the shells live version but yeah most of the best cyber punk is in the manga format. Ive wanted to read this book for awhile, didn't even know Netflix had it. Glad I didn't books are always better then a movie. I can't think of 1 book trunned film that was equal or better. Let us know if you think a movie was better the the book.

Who’s here after Netflix
I love the series too
Me! Both are great
I re-watched the adaption and wanted to remember how the book felt, but I gave it away, so this had to suffice. Take what is offered and all that. ;)
APO Productions the show was so good it lead me to read the book.

This is a great book building on Gibson for sure 🔥
Gibson? The guitar store?
@CLB Ronin ah ok, thank you
weird. this says its 11 hours 59 minutes long. but i downloaded it and my downloaded mp3 is 12 hours 59 minutes. and i checked the beginning and the end of each are the same. i vaguely skipped through the downloaded version and there didnt seem to be any empty spots. no idea how it is 1 hour longer. maybe its playback speed somehow got slowed down just enough to not be noticeable but over time (11 hours 59 minutes) it was enough to add up to an extra hour? im confused.
Gotta be the speed. Or an error maybe?
@@jotun.616 maybe yeah.

Why is the sound quality of this better than what i heard on audible. The clip for the first book sounded awful.
Janet Pagnotta I’ve been getting shity quality with audible too. Honestly I think they just organized all the recordings out there and not everything is new. This book is from 2002 I think, so I guess when it was recorded first it was cassette quality.
Did you both check your download quality in the settings? Apologies if you have it’s just a thought :) good luck hope it gets sorted!
Milen Stoikov Casettes actually were capable of high quality sound reproduction.

are there similar books where the protagonist is less situationally out of their depth and isnt continually one step behind what is happening to them? i'm at the part where he got jumped at jerry's (?) and its sort of eye-rolly how easily he got punked. i'm looking for a bit more plot armour.

Hi guys, what other books like this do u recommend? Books like this one & Neuromancer type futuristic books that are scifi but also have a story
Try Armies Of Memory by John Barnes
snow crash is a cyberpunk parody but it's well done I would recommend that
Mangas are the best place.
@@arkhamskunk4173 it's funny you should say that because I would highly recommend watching only season one of the show after reading this first book. Unfortunately it's already cancelled and we'll never see a season 3 but I would put altered carbon season one as one of my all time favorite cyberpunk piece of media and now that I've read the book I think theyre each good in their own way
@@arkhamskunk4173 That is usually true, however, I think Fight Club was better as a film. Even the author says that he likes the movie better.

Day on 28 minutes....
Sci-fi with a Marlowe vibe.
Elements of the story remind me of The Big Sleep.

I rarely say this, but I think the show was equally as good as the book is
No it's not .Everything people complain about season 2 were deeply embedded on season 1. They completely butchered what Envoy Corps are, they altered Quell from the scratch and made the story into a meaningless romantic thing
I think I dont like alliteration as soon as the book starts

I like the show better than the book and I can't say that about many adaptations. Unlike the Witcher which I think Netflix completely destroyed I loved poe in the show . Good TV show good book but if there was Edgar Allen Poe in it it would definitely be better.
The show, even in its fan favourite season 1, is a pathetic excuse of an adaptation that Netflix butchered from pretty much the get go

There’s no Poe and Laurens Bankroft sounds like Mr Burns. Apart from that it’s a great piece of sf
Living forever wound fit Mr Burns' personality.
Yeah Poe doesn't exist in the books, and I wish the actors could do a reading of this it would be so awesome
@@rodneykelly8768 do you think he would pay for smithers clone sleeve? Or maybe a cheap sleeve lol
@@marcos.a8814 We get a hint of this in the “Rosebud’ episode of “The Simpsons.” At end of the episode, we saw Burns’ head in a jar attached to a cybernetic body, and MR Smithers’ head is atop a robotic dog's body.
