Harmonizing in our songs expands the sound and expressive quality of the vocal line enormously. How we choose to harmonize can have radically different effects.
In this video I take us through some practices to gain some insight into the skills required to sing harmony parts and discuss the music theory behind harmonizing and voice leading.
    Enjoy!

This is great! I've been looking for some kind of theory or structure that I can use to find good harmony parts. I would appreciate a follow-up video on what I might call "hillbilly harmony", harmony that produces that country music sound.

You got it! As it happens, though, a third above the melody is basically what you're looking for which is primarily what I discuss in this video. That being said, I'll narrow it down in the follow up.
      Great request, thanks!

I'm working on a method to become a "natural harmonizer". I'm assuming that this is a talent (unlike perfect pitch) that can be learned. What I have done in the past is learn to sing all 12 intervals, up and down from any given note. I also write harmony parts out and memorize them for the songs I sing in my band. Believe it or not, this doesn't get it done. So I wrote out about 40 four note patterns like 1, 3, 6, 4 or 5,, 7, 3'4, etc. which I play on the piano and sing either a 3rd above or a 3rd below wit them. This has helped. When I sing with the band I can often just grab the harmony. I will probably add 4ths and 5ths to this exercise at a later date. I'll let you know how this works out in a few months. I'm sure you know this, but being a natural harmonizer is a highly sought after skill. I'm seeing ads in craigslist that ask for it.

Fantastic, after singing soprano in choirs for years, want to do harmonies in rock and roll. This is invaluable information and practice.

I'll revisit it. I did shots of my hands for a few months but it increases the editing/production time by more than a factor of 2. I am faced on one side with keeping a steady release schedule and on the other, by doing more elaborate videos. Thank you for the suggestion though!
